   Base Cards Scan
Comments:

The base cards in Series 2 are identical in design to Series 1. So if you're a fan of the first set, you'll like this one just as much. There are a few subsets within the set that include Team Managers, Team Photos, and Classic Combo dual player cards.

The cards are accented by foil printing on the top and bottom and feature a facsimile signature of the player above their names. If I had one complaint about the set, it would be the backs of the cards. The colors used aren't exactly the easiest on the eyes. But all in all, a nice design for the base brand.

   Rookie Card Scan
Comments:

There are thirty rookies inserted within the Series 2 set. They are designated by the official MLB Rookie Card logo at the top left of the card. As with the base set, the cards contain a facsimile signature of the rookie right on the front of the card.

While we didn't get the highly popular Dice-K Matsuzaka rookie card, we did manage to pull a wide range of rookie cards including the other Red Sox hurler from the Pacific, Okajima. With the collation and ease of pulling the rookies, you should be able to grab them all in just a few boxes.

   Numbered Parallel Card Scan
Comments:

There are three tiers for the parallels in Topps Series 2. The golds numbered to 2,007, the copper numbered to 56, and the platinums which are numbered 1 of 1.

We managed three gold parallels in our box. The gold border and foil is a definite upgrade from the base set, and the printed signature on the front of the card is replaced with gold foil on the parallels.

   Insert Card Scans
Comments:

Inserts, inserts, inserts! Topps Series 2 is loaded with them. At times we pulled up to three per pack. There's a huge assortment of different insert sets within Topps Series 2. Both Joe Dimaggio and Mickey Mantle both have tribute sets dedicated to them in Series 2. The Alex Rodriguez Road to 500 cross-promotion set is continued as well.

The Hit Parade and Topps Stars inserts should be pretty popular among the younger collectors with the holographic foil board card stock. While older collectors may get a kick out of the Distinguished Service cards featuring the likes of George Bush, F.D.R. and Harry Truman.

The Generation Now insert set continues the theme from Series 1 by highlighting some of the accomplishments of baseball's young stars. Trading Places and Opening Day were the other insert sets we pulled from. There are also rare autographed versions of many of the insert sets like the Trading Places and Distinguished Service sets. If you like inserts, you'll find your fill with Series 2.

Also randomly inserted are on-line codes for collectors to enter and take a shot at winning a trip to the 2008 All-Star Game in New York City.

   Game Jersey Card Scan
Comments:

Besides the handful of inserts, we were lucky enough to walk away with a game used jersey card of David Wright. There were no odds listed on the Topps site so I'm not sure how tough a pull it is or how often they're found. Regardless, a game jersey card in a product this inexpensive is a great bonus.

Both the 2006 Highlights and Trading Places cards have game jersey variations inserted into the product. If you're lucky, you may be fortunate enough to pull one of the Mickey Mantle relic cards which are randomly inserted.

   The Final Verdict!

I gave this set a 5 out of 5 H.I. Fives. Topps Series 2 is another classic Topps set. It's been a while since I opened a box of regular Topps baseball, and now I'm wondering why. I had just as much fun opening this box as I did opening Topps when I was 10 years old.

Not only is it a fun rip, but it's pretty inexpensive as well. With packs of cards costing hundreds of dollars, it's nice to be able to still get a nice big 36 pack box filled with rookie cards and inserts like this one. Sometimes you have to put the fun back into the hobby, and Topps definitely did it with their base brand this year.
