I'm just wondering why he has so few autographed cards. Never had a Cup auto of any kind that I could find, and I see little to nothing on Ebay.

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I just noticed it because I wanted to pick up one nice autograph of him for my PC.

Yeah, he didn't sign very much. With the card companies it was only a few years when he was with the Ducks and then once every few years for some BAP sticker autos. For the BAP sticker autos it almost seem he signed outside of the sticker on purpose too (or just didn't care to make his auto fit). The earlier ones were hard signed, so I would go for those, but be prepared to pay quite a bit, or wait for a live auction on ebay and hope you get lucky.

I don't know why he changed his mind those couple of years later. But he truly seems to have a disdain for autograph hunters and flippers. Don't know if it was just one incident or it was a bunch of them.

It probably didn't help that some angry "fans" wrote to the team to complain, as mentioned in the article above. It probably put a bad taste in his mouth, and it became a principle for him not to have people profit off his autograph.

I think there was another player that sort of felt the same way, and didn't sign much either. Linden didn't do a lot during his career either. There has been some in recent years.

I know Forsberg, Sundin, and Fedorov autos are pretty limited, but not sure the reason.

He was in St. Louis for a short time and I was lucky enough to get his auto at a Blues event (it wasn't free). But I do know the talk show hosts and such said that he is a quiet/private guy. Nothing wrong with that. I do remember them saying he donates a ton of his money to charity and doesn't seek recognition for it. Also said that he drove an old clunker car and was considered frugal for an athlete.

To be clear, Kariya has NEVER signed for anyone other than the BAP brand. He signed under the NHLPA umbrella that included guys like him, Forsberg, Sakic, etc. Forsberg didn't sign for UD until about 3 years ago, well into retirement, and Sakic was the same, retired. Now look, Sakic autographs are EVERYWHERE and Forsberg has plentiful options.

They all had the same agent, Don Baizley, and it was my understanding that Baizley guided them accordingly with regard to cards. Sidebar, Baizley was a terrific agent and even better human. I corresponded with him a few times about various topics over the years, very hands on, never passed my questions off to his assistants, always direct line, real good man. He's missed, R.I.P. Don.

Paul is definitely a quiet guy and very reserved. Ive met him a few times and one time he was talkative and glib, funny, the rest, very stoic.

I have some stuff he signed for me over the years but really love these 2 pieces. Fans over 25 years of age will possibly remember the first piece, the 35-45 crowd is in for sure. :)

In all honesty, I wouldn't be too surprised if Carey Price ends up like this in the next couple years.

Richard, respect your input and realize you typically use Canadiens and/or Price as your reference point for everything, but this statement is irrelevant here.

Carey Price has over 500 pack-inserted, certified autograph issues as of now, and you're saying in a few years he could end up this way. I would imagine even in a few years time that would add more to that massive number. Paul Kariya has just over 30 autograph issues. That's a vast discrepancy between the two as it stands now and that will be a finite number. You can't take away those Price autos on the market. That's not really going to have anyone wondering why Price has "so few" autographs like Kariya.

Seeing as Kariya doesn't want to be compensated for his signature I don't see that number growing. But, never say never! ;)

I went to highschool with Paul in Penticton while he was playing for the Panthers. (now known as the Vee's). He has always been a reserved and quiet person. Not totally comfortable in the limelight. But don't think he doesn't have a massive heart and isn't a giving person. A couple of weeks after he signed his first big contract a semi truck pulled up at his old billets house with a new hot tub for them to enjoy. Hes a good man who just isn't totally comfortable in the spotlight.

Carey Price? I had the chance to see him "in action" with his fans a few months ago in Kelowna during a signing. I have NEVER seen an NHL player so rude and incredibly ignorant to his fans in all my life. Everyone in attendance was stunned with his behaviour.

I heard that Kelowna thing Price was just having a bad day. Things happen, even for these athletes, and sometimes the spotlight might be the last thing they want to deal with on that particular day, which is totally understandable.

I'm no pro athlete, but sometimes at my job, I really love going into work and talking with my customers and forming new relationships with people day-to-day.

Other days? A customer might be the last person I want to interact with. Nothing against them, it's just that kind of day. Same thing happens with athletes.

And sure, people might say they have an added 'responsibility' with their given platform as a professional athlete, which I do agree with and that does exist. But still, they're only humans just like you and me. That last part might sounds cliche, but it's true.

Just my opinion. :)

He's a very private person who doesn't really want anything to do with hockey at the moment. He didn't even attend Teemu Selanne's number retirement despite a bunch of former teammates trying to convince him to go. The chances of him signing cards any time in the near future are basically zero.

I think Richard meant that Carey might shy away from the public spotlight in the coming years when it comes to that sort of thing.

I could be wrong though. (correct me if I'm wrong please :) )

But yeah, Carey Price's auto won't become as rare as Kariya's, due to the thousands that are already on the secondary market. So I think Richard was just referring to the privacy thing.

I was going through some of my older cards last week and thought "I would like to buy a Kariya auto for my PC". I was stunned to see that he doesn't have many and what the price was. I thought it was funny that this thread popped up soon after. :)

I was also at the Kelowna signing with Price and he did seem like he was not too happy that day. He did manage a smile for a picture with my little girl though, so that was nice. :)

Apparently he spends most of his days surfing in California. (not a bad way to enjoy retirement). He was one of my favourite players growing up so I wish he would sign more, but at the same time that makes his older stuff so much more desirable.
