I paid a visit to youtube to watch a replay of the Redden/Whitney fight from these play-offs and got misdirected to a Perrott-Peters fight. I just realized that I can't stand the Buffalo announcer one bit. Aside from his shrill, high-pitched voice, he may be the biggest homer in the league (this coming from a Flyers fan). According to this dude, the Sabres never do anything wrong, they only ever lose a fight because they couldn't get their gloves off in time or the other player "jumped" them, and they only ever lose because of bad calls and the other teams' dirty tactics. They never give ANY credit to the other team or admit that the Sabres sometimes just get beat by a better team. Granted, this is a generalization from the games I've had to endure watching with this freakazoid calling them as well as past clips I've seen. I can't think of anyone who annoys me more watching a game. Is there one?

Buffalo announcers are terrible, as are the Colorado announcers. Watching replays of Roy's fights is unbearable, the guy screaming "another right! another right!" when no punches are being thrown... what a clown.

McGuire is annoying as hell, too.

Yup, he is awful...guess that's why he's had the job for 38 years, is incredibly respected in the hockey community, and is a slam dunk HOFer broadcaster if and when he ever retires. To say Jeanneret (or, freakazoid as you call him) never gives any credit to the other teams is a joke, borderline offensive, and insulting. Obviously the countless beatings and embarassments the Sabres have inflicted on the Flyers in the last 10 years have clouded your judgment. Look at your quote again and honestly ask yourself if anyone over the age of 10 could believe it.

Ya, I like Jeaneret.

Some people need to realize when they watch FSN NY or MSG and hear the announcer showing some bias it's because he's not there to appease the visiting team's fans. I'm no Buffalo fan, but I think it's great that there's someone showing so much passion for the game as Jeaneret does.

All announcers are homers to an extent, even the ones that are on national feeds. Cole and Neale (CBC HNIC) are always talking about how great Toronto is, even when Toronto isn't playing.

The biggest homer I've ever heard in my life is Roger Millions that does the Calgary games on PPV. I swear, one time this guy said that the Flames were the greatest franchise in NHL history with all their achievements. I wanted to puke.

Other notably bad announcers are the FSN North crew that does the Wild games. They're homers and just sound awful and dull. Chico Resch of the Devils. Though his partner Doc Emmerick is one of the best imo, Resch is a total douche. He never talks about hockey and knows nothing about anyone outside of the Devils. Isles guys are pretty bad too, but you can't blame them really. 5000 fans and that hapless team, it's hard to be good every night. There's also the monotone golf announcers for the Pens

Some of the best:
Doc Emmerick (NJ and VS)
Tripp Tracy and the Carolina crew. He also does VS i believe. Very underrated imo.
Jim Hughson is okay, he gets redundant after with the same catch phrases all the time (Grrreat saaaave Luongo)
Randy Hahn and the Sharks crew. This guy sounds like Bob Costas
Chris Cuthbert. Can this guy catch a break? AWESOME voice and BPB and he was let go by CBC and isn't getting much time on TSN.

I hated the Boston Bruins announcers from the 80's. Not sure if it's still the same guys or not. Even when the bruin player got destroyed in a fight they still gave the wins to the bruin player! Probert vs miller comes to mind. same as Probert vs Quintal!

And what's the name of the guy on sportsnet pacific that interviews the players after each period. Seriously that guy can't put a sentence together for the life of him. He even makes up words LOL!

Terry Crisp is the absolute worst and Peter McNabb is running a close second - you would swear this two mouth-breathers have been watching a different game when you tune in. I will seriously mute the game if I really want to see it and either one of these boogereaters is on...just brutal.

And to whomever said Harry Neale - he's right in the mix too, I know I am probably breaking some sort of fandom rule here but I can't take him much either.

Loubardias, hands down, number one, without question.

Joe Bowen's pretty close to the top,
not a big fan of Tripp Tracy either.

Seriously, Jeanneret is one of the top play by play guys out there. He and Mike Lange are some of the greatest hockey entertainment in the United States.

Amen to that.....

C'mon Mr. Cole just hang them up why don't you!

Might be time but him and Neale are Icons. Really enjoyed their work although age has crept up.

The most annoying announcer ever...........Not hockey but CTV and TSN baseball announcer Fergie Oliver back in the day doing the Blue Jays. If I heard " How about those Blue Jays" one more time I was going to scream. His other show wasn't much better......Just like mom( or something like that)

Nobody comes close to this guy!!!!!!!

On the contrary, RJ is one of the best out there, and one of the last true talents at his job. I doubt you'll find too many cities where people look for ways to get RJs (or their home broadcast, I should day) broadcast voiced over whatever channel the team is playing on. (Except when it's on VS, can't expect anyone to want to listen to those jokers.)

Yeah, his voice shrills some when he gets excited, and he comes up with some crazy stuff sometimes. But he's not a homer nearly as much as some others out there, he speaks quite highly of other teams and players when they deserve it, and he talks down about the Sabres when they deserve it.

When RJ is gone, it will be a blow to the entire genre of play by play announcing. There simply aren't many others out there who can make you feel like you're not missing a beat when all you're doing is staring at the wall and listening to him.

Maybe I'm just seeing the wrong clips/games. And I could care less about the "beatings" the Sabres have put on us, as I either go to those games or watch the Flyers broadcast so I've never seen him call a Flyers game live. I'll give him entertaining and energetic. But his voice, that high shrill squeak, irritates me to begin with.
As for the fights I mentioned, here's a few nifty examples:
Perrot v Peters - Peters gets nailed from start to finish and gets floored. As he's on the ice, the Jeanneret (didn't know his name, just shrill nasally voice guy) says, "Peters trying to come back again." Maybe come back to his feet, I don't know what else "come back AGAIN" he coudl refer to. And of course, it was b/c he lost his balance.
Lindros v Barnaby - "LINDROS HAS LOST IT" "LINDROS JUMPS BARNABY WHEN HE HAD HIS BACK TURNED" Well, they were facing each other. And I don't know how he kicked Barnaby's legs out when his legs were on the OUTSIDE of Barnaby's.
McGrattan v Peters - When McGratton's the only one who lands the shots, it's, "Not too many connecting there." No, plenty connected, just not from Peters.
But that's just part of it, that, to him, Buffalo players never lost fair fights, they're either jumped, or they're a draw. As for games, I don't have any specific in-game clips to look at. Sorry. But I used the fights as an example because it's always the same excuses whether it's a fight or a game they lose. Even the awful Flyers announcers will admit when they just got straight up beat.

Rick Jeanneret is no doubt one of the best all-time, he makes hockey fun to watch for sure. Nothing was better than the Ottawa brawl game, listening to him is great! This thread is actually the first person I've ever seen that doesn't like him lol. The best announcers in the game always have their fans and haters. I too can't stand Harry Neale, he's probably my vote for the worst.

I'm sorry to say that I hate Jeanneret's voice more than anything in the hockey broadcasting world :P I've got nothing to say of his expertise (haven't seen that many games that he's done) but his voice - COME ON! How does he not cough and wheeze all the time

Actually there's a long list of people who don't like RJ for a variety of reasons.

Most of them have more to do with his voice, which I grant you, can take some getting used to.

And as for the way he calls things, or being a "homer" or whatever... you have to remember something else.. he has a contract with the team to be their announcer. All announcers do. They're paid to help the fans enjoy the game, so they're all going to spin things towards the team paying them. Fights are tough to call, especially in hockey, because you have a very limited amount of time to tell people what's going on.

I'm not going to tell you it's perfect. But I think RJ does a much better job than others about being *relatively* impartial when calling the game, and keeping the listeners excited. If nothing else he doesn't talk about Crosby and Ovy when they're not even playing that night.

Go to NHL.com and listen to the away team's broadcast against your home team a couple of times this season. Or put yourself in a Sabre's fans shoes while listening to some of the Philly games, or whatever. You'll understand then.

Pierre Mcguire is the worst ever, he has comments like this.
Pierre hows the ice down there. " Well Edzo its alright now but as the period goes on its going to get alot worse." Really now thats some great insight  Followed in a close second with both of those jokers that announce the Predators games, The southern accents announcing hockey make me want to slit my wrists.

add me to the list of people who can't stand RJ's voice. Also can't stand cole and neale and whoever does the games for the pens, every time i hear him its the most un-enthusiastic voice ever, unless its the pens then he goes nuts, but any other team and he doesn't even make an effort. Personally I only listen to hockey in french (RDS) so I think they're some of the best announcers, far more enthusiastic than a lot of their english counterparts even when its for the opposition.
Maybe now that cole and neale are no longer the main announcers for CBC (hughson and simpson will be) I'll actually listen to a few games in english this season.

I think if i was a Sabres fan I would love Jeaneret, adds excitement to the game.

But I'm not, kind of annoying. His over pronunciation of all the player names is annoying when they score -.-"

"STEVE BERNIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRR, WELCOME TO BUFALLLLOOO"
or
"MAAAXIMMM AFINNNNNNNOGENOV... TOP SHELF WHERE MAMA HIDES THE COOKIES"
