Your Hobby Goals & Resolutions For 2023

Hey everyone,

It's that time of year again.

The time that we reach into the depths of the closet and pull out and review all the fun pieces we've added to the collection. With new cards, also come new goals in this hobby of yours. Let's discuss them as we head into 2023.

For those who'd like to review your goals from last year, you can review Last Year's Hobby Goals / Resolutions Thread for 2022.

My Hobby Goals from 2022 were:

1) Get my Jhonas Enroth collection to 700 total cards.

Result: Success! With card # 700 incoming, I can safely say that this goal has been acheived. What a ride!

2) Complete my Upper Deck 300 Win Club set. (Need Belfour and Kipper)

Result: Failure. I hadn't seen any of my last two wants either for sale or at an affordable price. That's the way the hobby goes sometimes.

3) Expand my vintage goalie card collection.

Result: No dice. This is something that sounded awesome at the tail end of last year, but something I never got around to doing. Maybe next year.

4) Have fun.

Result: SUCCESS! While the years go by in this hobby, I have continuously felt the support from other collectors. I have also enjoyed seeing many awesome cards other people have added into their collections, which is always a blast.



Here are my hobby goals for 2023:

1) Reach 750 cards in the Jhonas Enroth PC.

This one will be tough, as similar to the past few seasons it was fairly dry on the new card front, so I'll maybe I'll have to find excuses to snag some duplicates or something, but I'm always up for a challenge.


2) Finish my Upper Deck Win Club set. (The Belfour and Kipper haunt my dreams.)

We'll see if this happens in 2023. Both are tough cards to find, but you never know.


3) Pickup a pre-war vintage goalie card for the PC.

Should be fairly easy, as long as I pick my spots and find a card I'd like to add at a reasonable price point.

4) Have fun.

It's cliche, but super important. This hobby is fun and my plan is to keep it that way. :dance:

My goals for 2022:


1) Help build my sons Brent Burns collection. This is the most exciting thing to happen to me in the hobby in years. My 10 year old son has taken up player collecting and has already made a couple of on line trades. His renewed interest in the hobby has renewed my interest. Seeing him go around the expo asking vendors if they had burns cards was awesome he was doing it all on his own. AND I saw his 14 year old brother going through one of his binders that he hasnt touched in years the other day.....maybe the time the younger one and I are spending in the hobby will bring him back into the fold Success and Failure I guess, my now 11 year old is huge into the hobby. Hie now has 129 unique burns cards 3 autos and 8 rookies....on the other end of this the now 15 year old son has a girlfriend and no interest in anything but

2) Add at least 10 Bobby Ryan cards from my want list Success although I really should have taken note of my starting point I know I added at least 10....I am now at 1278/1339 non 1/1's

3) Finish the 79-80 OPC set (390/396) and 87 OPC baseball set (330/396) 79-80 t 394/396 just havent been able to find the last two in the right price/condition combo 87 set done

4) work away at my 1977 Star Wars set ummm looks like I didnt add a single card

5) Finish off at least 2 of the 10 or so Gretzky sets/insert sets I am working on i know i finished at least 4 of these BUT didnt keep track of which ones and started new ones in the mean time lol

Goals for 2023

1) keep collecting with my son, took him to the fall expo and it was my favorite one yet. He has been to 10 or more with me in the past but he is at the age where he can find his own cards and do his own thing. I let him wander on his own....i found him in the upper deck break zone busting a tin of leafs centennial he bought with his own money....now we are doing the set what an awesome experience.

2) add at least 5 bobby ryan card to my PC, now that he isnt playing this is going to get harder and harder each year.....goal is to end 2023 at 1283 cards or more

3) finally finish the 79-80 OPC set (394/396) and 78-79 OPC sets (394/396) and 78 OPC baseball set (235/242)

4) finish complete sets for both my son and I of the newest Tim Hortons set hopefully released in the fall

5) add this card to finish off the set 1995-96 Upper Deck Gretzky Collection #G19 Wayne Gretzky

I'll be taking it easy in 2023. I have a nice stash of boxes to keep busy opening packs for a while. I'll also look for Gino Odjick stuff I don't have, affordable vintage rookies, stuff that I enjoy. I'm thinking of starting to trade more actively for affordable Carey Price cards that I like. I need to downsize my inventory, but I'm not sure I'll have much time to put on that project.

Here are mine from 2022, apparently I had some lofty goals:

1. Bust a hobby case of MVP or Upper Deck s1 or s2. Never done a hobby case before, did a case of blasters earlier this year.
Fail: I thought it about several times but decided against it

2. Land a 1/1 ( non buyback non show stamp) for the Klesla or Modano PC
Fail: None for the Klesla PC showed up and the ones that did for Mo were too expensive for me

3. Finish a release year for one of the PCs: base, insert, parallel, GU, auto, plate etc.
Fail: Got a lot closer but still fell a few cards short

4. Get the collection better organized. Nail down the wantlist, inventory the stuff I have. Get it all scanned.
Success-ish: I got my Klesla PC organized, Mo is still a work in progress

5. Have 75 copies of the Sanderson/Klesla dual patch from 02-03 Crown Royale. Currently have 48 so this might be doable.
Fail: Not even close haha, they just didn't pop up, I grabbed a few to put me over 50

As for 2023:

1. Get the Modano collection organized 100%
Should be able to do this, just need to focus

2. Land a few more Mo BGS 9.5 RCs I don't have
There's a few floating around out there now, feels like I can pull this off

3. Keep having fun
I've really enjoyed my time back in the hobby. I don't have that feeling of "I have to get that card for the sake of having it".

Should be fun, maybe 2023 will be more successful goal wise

I will simplify them for myself for 2023.

Museum Goals:

1) Try to get over the 25% of all goalies in NHL history mark with our pieces of history in the company vault (currently at 24.09%).

2) Try to get at least one larger scale exhibition showcased by our company where we are not bound by the space and rules of other events.

3) Continue networking and making the company known, not just inside the "game worn" and "sports card" communities.

Card Goals:

1) As last year, continue quality/unique box breaks and less quantity just for the sake of views.

2) Continue expanding my inventory with unique items to help fund items for the museum.

3) Continue adding items to my secret personal collection.

BUT NOW...

Let's see if we achieved any of our 2022 goals:

Game Worn Goals for the Museum:

1) Add at least another 20 unique goalies to the archives, perhaps even make a push and try to get up to 25% of the league's history (currently at over 22%)

Result: Close, but I was between 15-20 for the year. Though on the plus side, quality was a focus this year and we also got to over 24% of all goalies in NHL history.

2) Complete planning and consultation with appropriate parties (locations, government officials) to secure funding and set up a single full showcase museum exhibition (to start with) that is all my own and not a part of a "card show".

Result: Work in progress, this stage has been a lot more work than expected with everyone wanting an excessively large piece of the pie and/or excessive control over my pieces of history which I am not willing to give to others. Too many fingers in the pie make it inedible.

3) Keep up with my "Interview With an NHL Hero" series and try to get a goalie at least every 1-2 months.[/COLOR]

Result: Partial success. Work was a bigger focus for me this year, but I did resurrect the show a month and a half ago which was just as fun as ever to do.

4) Make even more revenue by monetizing my passion.

Result: Check. Both cards and memorabilia sales were up, and the one exhibition I did get into did break a personal record for museum revenue

5) See if I can push my YouTube channel to 500 subscribers (more is better, but I am not shooting for the stars yet).

Result: The numbers went hand in hand with some of my card goals so we hit over 400, which I am happy with. If any of my videos makes someone's day a bit brighter, I am good with that, not everything is about money.

Card goals for my company

1) Do less box breaks since they are not only becoming more of a money sink, they are getting less and less fun to do which is a deadly combo and begs the question why I still do them.

Result: Success. While I still did an okay amount, the focus was on more interesting products. As a result, I enjoyed the ones I did a lot more and I could avoid the modern junk wax that hobby boxes (for the most part) seem to have become since the pandemic.

2) Acquire more higher ticket items with higher profit margins which can then be re-invested into larger museum items. Why buy at $2 to move an item at $20 if I can buy at $2000 to flip for $5000 or more to reinvest into the hobby and my goalie museum company.

Result: Partial success. Why break from my niche is what I discovered. I make the most revenue when I stick to my sweet spot of moving the $20-$200 cards. Those levels of cards are rarely affected by economic conditions and if you sell a small stack you are still doing well.

3) Add select pieces for my own lock-away PC. Not about how valuable they are, but what they mean to me.

Result: Success. I added a small stack of goodies for my PC both through card shows and pack pulls.

This will be lame as hell, but honestly, to cut back my hobby spending to less than $2,000 for the year 2023. If my spouse knew how much I spent in 2021 and 2022, she would have at lease considered de-spousing me.

My resolution from that thread. This I did. I moved about 70% of my cards during the peak until it tapered off. Anything high pop was the first to go and I worked my way down. I wish I had moved a few more cards early on, but I don't mind holding them at this point.

The bad thing is that it cost me one big buyer located here in Toronto (they chose to hold everything they bought from me instead of moving it right away and wound up eating the market downturn and have notified me that they will no longer purchase from me). The good thing is that instead of quantity I now have quality and all fit in a shoebox.

I also stuck to my own policy and cut off buying boxes almost completely. I MAYBE spent $500 on boxes all year long vs the thousands I used to spend on boxes and cases.

for 2023, I want to pare down even more if it's worth it and add rare Vladdy cards that catch my eye.

SOLD plenty of my high end stuff since EXPO resumed in November 2021.
I still have lots of mid range cards by my standards but 2023 will be my last as a dealer.
Collection wise, really cut back on what suits my budget since I have other interests outside the hobby to spent my dollars (home, travel, .....).
Projects on the go, Parkhurst Super Rookies Bobby Orr autographs (DONE), UD Extended Mascots BLACK, almost there and for 2023, 2015 UD Master Collection set of 10 Bobby Orr autographs #/20 cards, a few to go!
Otherwise a few case breaks of UD2 and not much more and time to slow down as I have done over the last few years. Definitely there will be less S & Ts.
Might even put out some PC stuff less Bobby Orr for sale @ EXPO.
IT'S almost time!

Retrospective of 2022 Goals:

It was a very successful year for my PC and for knocking off a number of cards that had long been on my wishlist, due to a late flurry of acquisitions in the past two months. However, let's look back at my official goals for 2022 and see where I was successful and where I still have room to improve.

1. Add Gilbert Perreault autograph #100 to the collection

Success! In fact, I am up to 116, with two more currently in transit. A couple of Buffalo-collectors liquidated their collections, allowing me to add a number of cheap Perreault autos. I was also able to pull in some of my most wanted Perreault's this year, including the 11-12 Marks of Distinction, 04-05 Summit Stars, 05-06 SPGU Old Timers' Challenge, 05-06 Beehive, and the 10-11 Limited Monikers. I won't have a new number goal for 2023, but I will always be looking to bring in more.

2. Be more purposeful with my additions/spending

A bit of both! I probably spent too much money aimlessly. Although I don't have any regrets, as I kind of shifted my focus toward bringing in more autos of players who I think are very undervalued or sets I think are undervalued (players like Boom Boom Geoffrion, Stan Mikita, even Jean Beliveau, or sets like the two Signs of Greatness subsets, Inkredible, Parkhurst O-6, etc.).

3. Add two new HHOF cut autos (if the price is right!)

Success! I was able to bring in cut autos of Art Coulter, Leo Boivin, Punch Imlach, Fred Shero, Frank Buckland, Doug Bentley, Pat Burns, and Sweeney Schriner. I did lose out on a Charlie Conacher cut that is still haunting me - but hard to feel anything but happy about 8 I did acquire.

4. Continue to have fun with my Instragram account

I will count this one as a success. I don't post nearly as consistently as I should, which greatly hurts my engagement numbers. I started a few new teaching/education-related positions this year, which takes up a ton of my time and means i try to be very selective with how I spend my free time. However, I do still have a blast seeing what everyone else is posting. You can find me at IG as gilbert.perreault.collector.

My 2023 Collecting Goals:

2022 was a banner year for knocking off cards that had been on my wishlist for years and years. This includes:

I think I was fortunate enough to scratch off about 15 cards from my long-term wishlist, which is far and away the most ever. With that said, that leads into my first goal.

1. Add one white whale card.

My top three wants are still unobtained - I want to change that next year. I'll be on the lookout for at least one of:

2004-05 Legendary Signatures - Gilbert Perreault auto
1999-00 Century Legends Gold Epic Signatures - Wayne Gretzky auto
1991-92 Future Trends - Ken Dryden Gold Swirl auto (at a reasonably affordable price - not thousands of dollars)

2. Add two more cut signatures.

Same as last year. I would like to add at least two more HHOF cut signatures. I am especially interested in a cut of Charlie Conacher and Max Bentley.

3. Continue a 2022 vanity project.

Since my collection largely revolves around HHOF enshrinees, I have amassed quite a few autos of a handful of selected players. Some of these totals have hit double digits for certain players, including:

In 2022, I boosted Mr. Hockey, Beliveau, Mikita, Cournoyer, Phil Esposito, Park, Lafleur, Hawerchuk, and LaFontaine to 10+ autos - and it was really fun searching for a significant, meaningful card to be the one to push the total to double digits for each player. I currently have a few players at the 9-card total, such as Hasek, Schmidt, Bathgate, Denis Potvin, and Fuhr. I would love to get them to the arbitrary 10-card total during 2023, especially Hasek, since he is a Sabres all-timer. I also have a smattering of players at the 8-card count, so I think it would be cool to go for double digits for these players by 2024.

And I think that is about it. I mostly just want to continue to have fun with collecting in 2023!

Four goals for 2023:

1. Finish my SPA sets (including any updates in 21-22 SPA, when that comes out).

2. Get rid of my mid-high end bulk, looking at you Bulk-Buyer! .

3. Continue spending $0 on sealed products and breaks, barring an unfathomable pricing return to earth in 2023.

4. Make it to spring or fall Expo (finally!).

Always a fun thread. Haven't participated the past couple years but let's give it a shot this year.

1) Focus more on the sharks PC. Currently waiting on a COMC shipment that will put me just over the 12,000 card mark. I would hope to reach 13,000 by year end.

2) Get the collection organized and scanned. This will take some time but I'll be happy if I get at least all the way back to 05-06

3) Finish all my ongoing sets and slow down the set collecting.

4) Get organized with my sharks rookie/auto wantlist. Would like to get a rookie/auto of every player to have suited up for the sharks. Need to compile the list and compare with what I have. I'll be happy just to be organized, no completion expectations yet

5) Cut back on opening product and continue to wind down the traders box.

My 2022 goals were:

For 2022:



Main Goal:
Hit 700+ cards for the Giacomin collection. I am right around 625 now so I think that's doable.

693. So close. One of those additions included the Property Of. Also picked up a game used stick. I'll still call this a win!

Necessary Goal:
Organize my Giacomin PC. It's all in chronological order but too many boxes. I have a bunch of supplies stockpiled already for this and plan to do it over Christmas vacation.

Done! Looks infinitely better the way I have it organized now.

Long Term Project Goal:
I'd also like to start a new long-term, somewhat affordable, project. Leaning towards 21/22 OPC base and some of the base parallel sets. I love breaking wax, and like sorting and organizing, so would like to find a project that fits the bill. OPC really seems to. Tons of stuff to chase to keep me busy, nothing should be too expensive, and all would store nicely in albums. The Giacomin PC keeps me semi busy so I'm looking for a way to stay more involved in collecting rather than a 30 second search on eBay a couple tmes a day.

21/22 OPC Master set is coming along. Ended up 7-8 cases deep in that stuff and had an ABSOLUTE BLAST doing it. Met a couple new friends in the process. Really having fun with this. Keeps me occupied for quite a bit of time each week searching for cards I need. My progress:

-Hit 750 unique Giacomin cards. Might be a bit of a stretch goal.

-Finish off the PSA 6 or better portion of the Pre-77 stuff of my Giacomin PC. I just need the 69/70 OPC and all of his regular release cards I'll have in a PSA 6 or better.

-I also started up very small, very specific, PCs of Howe and Dryden. I'd like to add a couple nice game-used and/or autos to each of these.

-Add 20 cards to my 06/07 BTP Game-Used Jersey/Emblem/Number sets. A new project I started up towards the end of 2022.



I think that should be enough to keep me busily broke for 2023, LOL.

So apparently I went the other direction on this one. I decided to refocus the Patrick Roy PC early in 2022 and started to sell off everything I didn't "need".

My Roy PC now sits at around 450 cards and I think I will likely trim that down a bit more in the coming year.

My goal for 2023 will be to continue adding cards I enjoy and purging what I no longer do.

I did not set any goals last year but wanted to Purge my non PC.
Got to do a 1st at the Expo this Fall and setup at a table. Got rid of a good bit of bulky items that I no longer need/want.

Goals to accomplish in 2023.
Main Goal is to reduce my non PC/Traders to almost nothing.

Add to following;
2001-02 UD Mask Collection Jersey #'d 150, Jersey/Patch #'d 100 & Double Patch #'d 50.
2004-05 ITG Franchises Auto & GU'd. Was able to add 2 Autos and 3 GU'd this year.

Last year I fell short of getting to the 3000 mark. Was just around 2700 and made it to 2912! I have 9 incoming from COMC, 3 from ebay. That leaves me with 2924. I was able to get close, and I really believe this year I will do it!

Just harder and harder to add lately. Will be posting a top pickups of 2022 in the next week or so!

My 2022 goals:

Add one 1/1 to the Patrick Roy PC: FAIL. I missed out on three that came available on eBay during the year.

Reach 77.5% completion on my Roy PC: MAJOR PASS! Thanks in huge part to Scott, I was able to crush this goal and currently sit at 81.05%. Without our large transaction earlier in the year, I would be closer to 77.9%, still over my goal but those 90+ cards were a huge deal!

My goals for 2023 are a bit bold for my Roy PC, in my opinion:

PC Completion of 85%. Currently at 81.05%, I would need to add 117 new cards to the PC. This will be a tough one to get to, but certainly doable.

Reach 5,000 total Roy cards in my PC. Current count is 4,102. This will also be a tough one to meet, unless some large lots of base cards come available.

PC Beckett Book Value of $100k. I know BV is arbitrary and doesn't reflect actual value, but I do keep track of this on all my card trackers. Beckett BV currently sits at $83,862.50.

Add at least one 1/1 to the Roy PC. Going to keep at it until it happens!

Non-Roy goals:

Pavel Bure PC: get completion up to 15%. Currently sits at 6.93%, as I haven't spent too much time or money on this one in 2022. I would need 178 new cards to reach this, but should be pretty easy to reach with some base lot pickups.

Restart graded rookie PC. I sold off this PC in 2021, and hope to add 20 graded rookies of HOFers/Future HOFers.

I'll also be posting my top pickups of 2022 shortly.

My goals have been the same for the last few years: Grow the Ranford PC, grow the All-Time Oilers PC. I'm adding "grown my Slapshot PC" to this list though!

I dug around and last found a "resolution" type post I made in early 2021.

My biggest Oilers PC wants for the last few years have been to close in on getting an autograph from every WHA-era Oiler (which I started working on back in 2017). There's 125 of them (that never played for the Oilers in the NHL). That early 2021 post shows me as having 85/125.... which was up from 68/125 in early 2020 (or possibly late 2019).

Now? I have 103/125 - but that was over the last (nearly) two years. I would be thrilled to get a few more. Is hitting 110 this year doable? Maybe, maybe not.

For the NHL era: I've currently got 606/618. The missing 12 are mostly (very) current players, and a couple of emergency backups from the 80s. For most of those, I'm just waiting for cards to come out... when the 2021 releases are finally done, I'll be looking to add a bunch. I'd love to knock off one (or both) of those EBUGs from the 80s, but I've been looking for a long time, and no luck.

I'm sure another player or two will make their Oilers debut this year (and early 2023), so I'd like to be in the 618/624 range by the end of 2023. I think that's doable.


For Ranford: I'm less focused on "get one of everything" than I used to be. There's been a ton of multi-player GU cards in the last few years that didn't interest me nearly as much as they once would have. I typically go one any copy of any variation of those - and leave it at that. Certainly do still try and build rainbows from sets like Artifacts & SPGU.

It would be a successful year for my Ranford collection if I were to add another 10 cards (based on my current wantlist). It would be really successful if I were able to add a card I need pre-2015 (of which there are 9, they're all limited to 25 or less... 6 of them are /5 or less).

My Slapshot PC: I wish I had started this years ago. It's been a ton of fun for me to build. I'm chasing signatures from as many people that were in the movie as I can get. Most of them are coming via TTM autos, on custom cards I'm making from screen shots of the movie. My current total is at 56 (some of these are pack-pulled autos too). I'd like to hit 65 next year..... but it's getting tougher and tougher to find new ones.


Finally, I'd like to find the time to get a lot of stuff scanned that I have not already done (and show it off). A 3-6 larger S&T threads this year would be nice to do.

My plans for 2023

-get back to some good old fashion trading

-add one 2008-09 ultimate debut patch Patric Hornqvist (would make 30 of the 50 cards)

-add at least one 2008-09 ultimate debut patch numbered #50/50 and one 2010-11 numbered #35/35

-try and finish the 1994-95 Upper Deck Predictor Hobby (blue) set. Need 9 cards

-try and finish the 1995-95 Upper Deck Predictor Hobby. Need 3 cards

And lastly, finish any of the other million projects I have going

2023:
Trade more.
Focus on the things I enjoy.
Don't let the nitwits get to me.
