I love collecting hockey cards because..

...it allows me to connect to pieces of history of the game. Whether it's an autograph, game-used, or even just a poignant photo, they all let me get just a little bit closer to the game now and the game as it used to be.

Childhood memories.....blah, blah, blah. But I also enjoy collecting because it's a great community of people I get to share this hobby with. I'd be far less into collecting if there were no local shows, trade nights, hobby boards, blogging or other hobbyists who were into collecting as much as me.

I love the thrill of adding new cards to my wantlist (yes, it's true).....keeping my detailed list up to date, feeling like I'm on top of things. I like hunting down those tough cards. I love adding cards to my "keepers" boxes.

I love the creativity of the hobby......doing whatever I want to do in terms of collecting. I get to call the shots. I love card designs and seeing how the pros do their work. I'd love to do what they do for a living.

I think having a collection of some sort (be it hockey cards or whatever) is something that everyone should create and build. I think it generates a ton of life skills and makes me see some bigger pictures a lot clearer.

First off, I have no childhood memories of card collecting as a kid (my younger bro actually had more interest than i did). I was totally into comic books and wrestling magazines growing up. So my primary reasons for card collecting today are three-fold:

- Cards take up less space! When I moved from a house to a condo last year, I was totally freaking out at how much space my various comic boxes were taking up. Since the move, I've sold off large chunks of my comic/tpb collection which has helped fund new card purchases.

- The new relationships that you generate from the various shows and hobby boards. Whether it's the monthly shows or here on HI (I really don't post anywhere else), it's great to know that you're only a keystroke away from like-minded individuals that share your passion.

- This hobby keeps my son and I close. These days he's been busy dealing with the rigors of high school, but in his free time we fall back on our card collections to keep that father/son bond going. There's nothing we like more than opening new packs together after a show or lcs visit.

At some point, when we decide to move back into a larger space, I might consider adding gamers to my collection. But for right now, cards do me just fine.

I like completing things. Like solving "a problem" that is my wantlist. Not so possible nowadays being a player collector, but that's why I've started to enjoy collecting some 3rd and 4th liners from the 1990's/early 2000 I've always appreciated as a hockey fan. As a that kind of person who values the "forces behind things" rather than going for the top stars, it's been fun and fulfilling to collect that way. Saves me a lot of money too. Plus, I get to acquire a lot more team issues etc than before. :)

I should start a soap opera called "The Friends and the Flip". This hobby has always been about the people in it, for me. I haven't been to the Expo in about three years and when I went back last Sunday, it was handshakes and high fives (and a hug here and there) from those who haven't seen me in as long.

I'm also about the flip. I buy to flip and often look for dealer mistakes. I don't hide that fact. I personally can't look at what's out there right now and say that it ties me or reminds of anything to do with my childhood. I've started going out and buying the actual cards that do. I've just started into buying unopened packs which is an even bigger time warp if you can find the right ones.

In the end, I like meeting up with folks and talking shop and getting myself re-introduced to the hobby.
 
Lots of reasons. The biggest:
1) The hunt. For a post-hunter/gatherer society, the constant quest for prey is immensely satisfying.
2) Despite the fact that on any given day I want to exterminate large swaths of people for the crime of annoying me, a big draw has always been people. I've met a whackload of great folks that I wouldn't have met otherwise.
 
The main reason I collect,or more precisely still collect is the hobby has become a touchstone to the past.My entire life has revolved around the sport as player,coach,fan,as well as collector and the cards are a tangible connection to my past memories.
 
I enjoy cards because I can't afford to buy full game-worn jerseys, and memorabilia cards are the next best thing ;)

The thrill of the chase and landing a rare or short printed card that only a handful of collectors in the world will ever own are also factors. I particularly enjoy cards with print runs of less than ten and most of my main PC cards are numbered to nine or lower.
 
If I didn't collect hockey cards, I wouldn't be able to add these rare memorabilia beauties to my collection:

I am thankful Sportkings has introduced me to the hockey world. Being from Kansas and growing up playing baseball, football, and basketball, I never paid any attention to hockey at all. Because of that product, I have met many new, wonderful people; Been introduced to amazing, vintage collectibles; And learned that hockey collectors are die hard enough to bring new meaning to the thrill of a chase;
 
Well, let's face it Mike: Between you and I, we could probably keep a small African nation afloat.
 
I have two answers ...

I collect hockey cards because I like the looks and designs of some, and as Quincy pointed out, I enjoy the hunt.

But more importantly I have hockey cards because, honestly, I can't find anything more thrilling to do with my money than rip a case or two (or ten) of the newest product. Pulling cards like the ones I show in my sig is a huge rush.
 
Simply put: the people. I've meet a ton of great people over te two years I've been in the hobby. Dean, Geoff, Justin, mike fitz, Andrew, Harry and I'm sure a dozen or more I've forgotten locally. That's not counting the fantastic folks I've meet here in the boards and at the expo including the big boss Gomaz ( still thank him to this day for hooking me up with upper deck for the wicked picture and card at the last fall expo). Sure te cards are fantastic ad the chane at some hockey history is nice, but without a decent crowd it would all mean very little.

2.) Fond memories of collecting with my dad.
3.) Because I am secretly a cat and shiny things hypnotize me.
