Game is a little over 2 hours away.

Hopefully Kovalchuk & co beats the Nucks for the second straight year. There's nothing like Canada getting their asses kicked (perhaps Sweden)...

Let the good times roll.

It happens so rarely, I'm sure it is a treat. Kind of like seeing Haley's Comet every 75 years. :)

Canada needs to neutralize Kovalchuk. If they do that, they should be okay. Anything can happen in a one-game final. Even a lousy team like the Russians can win a game with a hot goalie. ;)

The Soviet Union won 95 out of 139 games vs. Canada. Canada won 32.

There's some noteworthy statistic for you. :p

Soviet Union - their best players (Larianov, Krutov, Tretiak, etc.) who played hockey for a living as a part of their duty to their country/army.

Canada - guys who could not crack AHL level teams or even play on third rate teams in Europe, who made up a national team where they were paid food and lodging.

We should not have won 32 games, when you look at it that way. Do more research.

Unless it is best on best, there is no point comparing.

Even today's game, as exciting as it will undoubtedly be, is not best on best (otherwise Malkin, Crosby, Ovechkin, and Luongon would be mentioned during the telecast as players).

Now for the only TRUE measure of hockey dominance (best on best, no mid-season injuries, every player comes in fresh, etc.):

the World Cup / Canada Cup results, in 7 tournaments:

Canada - 5 golds, 2 silvers
Soviet Union/Russia - 1 gold, 1 silver
USA - 1 gold, 1 silver

Everyone else - 0 golds, 3 silvers

That is an absolutely ridiculous and naive statement considering Canada has had home-ice advantage in every single game of those tournaments. (Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt I am)

EDIT: 1996 World Cup
August 31, Philadelphia: Canada 3-5 United States
September 7, Philadelphia: Canada 3-2 Sweden (2OT)
September 10, Philadelphia: Canada 4-3 United States (OT)

Oh well, that's 2 Final games at home. :p

Okay then. 1972 Summit Series. No home ice advantage. Rested players, late summer series, best on best.

Canada wins.

It doesn't matter where the games are played. In fact, Canadian teams usually do better on the road because there is less pressure on them. The pressure to win at home is sometimes a negative factor. The guys on the pre-game of the World Championships were just talking about that a few minutes ago, as a matter of fact.

Look at World Juniors and the Junior Summit Series a couple of years ago.

It's really not as close as you think it is.

Update in the second period...

Radulov scores to make it 2-1. Then proceeds to do a bush league stick spinning celebration. Makes me want to throw up.

Weird game. Canada with the vast majority of scoring chances, but no finish. Russians have made the most of their chances.

Still 2-1 Russia with about 11 minutes left.

Somebody needs to tell Lindy Ruff his guy Derek Roy should not be on the ice when you need a tying goal in the last minute. Jeez....useless!

This is one of the weakest team Canada has put forth at this tournament in a while.

I mean they took Chris Mason over Steve Mason and Travis Zajac over Mike Richards, Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau, that's just off the top of my head.

You can't expect to win if you don't send your best players. Whether it is Hockey Canada's choosing the weaker players or if the bette rplayers said they didn't want to go, I don't know, but this was really not a strong team, I'm surprised they made it to the finals to be honest.
