Hey everyone,
Didn't think I'd have a mail call for a long, long time but here I am. Had some family issues and a wedding to plan in, oh, about three days so that we could have it this past Saturday (June 14th). It was hands down the best day of both mine and my new wife's life.
First, we'll start with by far my favorite wedding gift. My buddy Wayne is a big hoops guy, but he's dabbled in mid-late '90s low-numbered inserts, so our collecting paths keep crossing. He'd bought several sets of these over the last few years and I'd kept telling him I would buy this card from him eventually. So when I opened up the wedding card from him, I was stunned to find this:
I had been wanting one of these since I was about 10, but had either been outbid or not able to pony up the cash to grab one. After the shock wore off, I laughed to myself and said "watch it be unnumbered" as there are an absolutely TON of unnumbered, likely backdoored, versions floating around online. That's when I noticed the note on the back that read "what, did you think I would get you the unnumbered version?"
Next up is another gift, this one being of the HI generosity variety. Since I've joined up here at HI, I've made my share of friends (and enemies). I try to help those friends out whenever I can and lately, I've found that I can help a few folks save on outrageous shipping charges by having their cards sent through me. One of those is Wes (WesM44). It was a pleasure helping a friend, so this wasn't necessary but is incredibly appreciated. Thank you again, Wes!
Finally, the reason for this post.
As some of you know, my now-wife and I were dealing with the illness and, ultimately, loss of her mother. We had rushed our wedding up so that she could see us married and after taking a few days off to coordinate things, I'd returned to work. Unfortunately on my first day back, she passed after her nearly four year battle with cancer.
I had been in the office for no more than 90 minutes before having to leave again to attend to matters. Moving to a less awful topic, I had been chasing the 1996/97 Flair Blue Ice /250 for awhile now. It had rapidly become my favorite set and it was the one I wanted to finish most of all. In the 90 minutes I was back at work, I saw a PM from Cole (Roaddogg), alerting me that the final card I needed had hit the bay. I made my offer and then completely forgot about it as I left the office. A few days later, I noticed I had an item to pay for and it was soon in my hands. A huge thanks to Cole for giving me a very bright spot in the middle of some dark days.
Which brings me to 100% on arguably my favorite set ever:
A big thanks once again to all who contributed to this post!
