A shout out to some fellow HI’ers! And a contest giveaway

Hey folks, once again it’s time to post about how impressed I am by the great community of collectors this board has. It never fails to amaze me how many friendly and selfless people are a part of this collecting community. Although I could list off tons of people over my years here, today I want to mention three people that recently went above and beyond.

With the recent news we got regarding our son’s disability, I decided to go through the collection and sell some cards I was willing to moving to help fund medical expenses. Shortly after I listed the cards here to sell, Frankiefives reached out to me and said he’d take the whole lot. And that was such a kind gesture and incredibly helpful to us! Not long after, Djsatu reached out to me and asked for my address, saying he wanted to send something over. Yesterday, I received a package that was pretty exciting to open! Inside I received two cards, one being a Backlund RC patch auto that was a very nice patch upgrade to the one I already had. And also inside was an Iggy Spx Duo View card that I surprisingly didn’t own. So it’s pretty cool to add two cards to my two big pc’s!

Update: I feel stupid for forgetting to mention that Trekrun went out of his way to send me an OPC blank back Mikael Backlund to me just because. Incredibly nice gesture from him! I’m sorry for my mind slipping on that one!

And honestly, I could list so many more people that have been awesome over the past few years, and you all know who you are! So once again, thanks to those two individuals for the thoughtfulness. And thanks to everyone that reached out after I mentioned the tough news. We appreciate the thoughts and prayers and feel encouraged by it!

Now for the little contest giveaway!

In light of the thankfulness I feel, I thought it would be fun to pay it forward and do a little contest giveaway. It’s not much, but something to show my appreciation!
Below I have a photo of some cards, and I’d like to give them all to one winner.

As for the contest, all I ask is that you share a very brief story of how someone else in the hobby has blessed you in any big or small way. And I will put the names of those who comment in a hat, and pick a winner!

I’m not sure how long to wait, maybe I’ll give it until Saturday night, and then I’ll do the draw.

Please note: the two Young Guns have a slight flaw since the hologram in the back was stamped on a bit deeper. You can see it in the bottom right. That’s how I pulled them in the packs

Looking forward to the comments!

thanks for the contest

Truly remarkable how a community like HI comes together and rallies around another member.

Cheers! Thanks for the great gesture. Good luck everybody.

On a side note, frankiefives is one of the best in the biz.

Kudos to those who have helped Jayden out so far.

As for me, so many examples I could list of members here who have shown me hobby kindness over the years, even as recently as g-force Greg with Expo. But I still have to default to this story from 2013 as it involves help from not one but two HIers.

Last weekend, I met up with HI's own fearless leader Jeremy at his home to collect this from him. He had exported this from the Expo, where he had graciously acted as the middleman and received it from HI's own "Whonos" Ray.

Apparently, Ray had shown this card here a few months ago. I never saw that post at the time. Instead, I had first spotted this card in a random Photobucket search and traced it back to him. Certified autos and GU cards are the foundation of my PC, but those who know my collection know that uncertified autos are a big niche part of it as well. This card combines the best of both worlds - GU with a surprise auto that wasn't supposed to come with it. I had to have it, and immediately contacted Ray about it.

Ray had pulled it himself, and was somewhat attached to it. He was big on the Forever Rivals product in general and tempted to go after the Stick Racks set. When I inquired, he told me the Expo would settle all. If he found what he was looking for, he would stay the course. If he didn't, they would be made available to help out player collectors.

When I saw a recent post from him indicating he was helping too many player collectors and no longer pursuing the set, I dropped him another PM to ensure I was on the callback list. We worked out a price, and Ray assured me I would get it once he was back and settled from Expo. True to his word, he messaged me soon after saying Jeremy had the card and details.

The card was this:

12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Stick Rack #SR-33 Larry Murphy /10 Autograph

And the details were:

He was gifting it.

That's right - a guy who doesn't know me, has never met or done business with me and owes me nothing, flat-out gave it to me. He pulled it himself, liked the card, and whether you liked Murphy as a player or not, this card was still worth "something", at least to me. A completely unexpected act of kindness from a guy who's clearly a credit to both HI and the hobby in general.

Thank you so much, Ray. And thank you Jeremy for the assist in getting it safely to me. It was great to see you again and get the chance for a 1-on-1 visit. And thanks for providing us with a great site where people like Ray make such special things happen.

I've had a couple members of the board reach out to me because they saw a rare card of a player I collect and wanted to make sure I saw it. It's always a wonderful feeling knowing you are being looked out for by your peers, especially when you have never even met before. Special shoutout to creasecollector, he has always been a big encourager for me.

Thanks for the shout out Jayden. It was a pleasure dealing with you. This community is a great one with amazing people. All the best to you and your family.

I made my contribution to your PC and it's great that you now show your appreciation by your offerings.

Norm, you are always top notch. It completely slipped my mind when I wrote this thread to mention you, and I’m very disappointed about that. I really appreciated the Backlund card you sent me and it is sitting happy in the backlund pc. Thanks again for your kind gesture!

Shout out to M35Richter, who scours the Expo floor trying to help me with a few tough set needs. He was actually successful a few times and I greatly appreciate it. Nice to see the generosity is still alive and well around here.

Great stuff!!

I’ve made many friends through these boards, and used to run Trade Days for the guys. Many, many guys made the long drive to make these days happen, giving up their time and gas money and draw prizes and so on. 99goals Spideryguy, goalieguy01, Roli30, Mikeysleafs, all the TO boys, joshpackham, BigBarracuda, hortonsdrinker, and so many more.

Great thread! Like many on here I’ve been very fortunate. That stick out in my mind we’re back when I was collecting Eric Staal.

Quincy landed me the 1of1 2005/06 CUP Black parallel. Still have it, it stays here.
Naim - when I had all but given up on the 03/04 Champs BAZOOKA parallel, right out of the blue he PMd me that he found one and had the guy hold it for me. Too cool!

While typing this I’ve thought of at least 6 more amazing stories. Yup, this place rocks!

Glenn

Thanks for the shout out as well Jayden. All the best always to you and your family. Looking forward to meeting up with you later on down the road.

Warms my heart. Such a great group of people who hang out here.

I've met so many people through HI, the blessing I am most thankful for is all the friendships I've had the privilege of having.

I have had the great fortune of being the recipient of HI generosity on too many occasions to count. Here are a few folks that stand out to me.

Winston (Winniescards)

I was at the post office one day and got a package I wasn't expecting, turned out to be a Canada Post print of Frank Mahovlich, autographed version no less.
This illustrates the generous nature of Winston, he knew I would like this item very much so he just sent it my way. One of the cornerstones to my Big M PC.

Ironman Indy
Geoff and I have done a slew of deals over the years. Just as above this card showed up one day unannounced. Frank Mahovlich OPC Premier Black auto 1/1, in my avatar. Quite a nice card to have in the PC.

Big Barracuda
Glenn has made several custom cards for my Sean Burke PC, as well as a Carl Brewer custom tall boy auto card. Nice piece for my Leafs collection.

, Vintage Hockey.

Ron sent me a Frank Mahovlich team issued stick, circa early 60's that I have signed by Frank. Another example of HI generosity at its best.

Satelitejack
Rob has sent many items for my Big M PC including an oversized custom jersey card showing Leafs, Wings, Habs and Team Canada swatches. Very thankful for these members and countless others here that love this great hobby of ours.

I'd be remiss if I didn't give a shout out to Ike, Bruce and Jeremy, the three
owners of this site who allow us to spend our time doing things we enjoy so much. Thanks so much guys.

Cheers.
Dan.

Thanks for sharing guys! Bump this up one last time before I do the draw tonight, say an 8:30 mountain deadline. And I’ll announce a winner around 9 mountain

Just did the draw and my wife drew out BigBarracuda. Congrats Glenn. I’ll send you a pm for your address

Thanks for sharing everyone!
