crossover grading from BGS to PSA

Most BGS 9.5 80's OPC RC are sheet cut cards which PSA will not grade. It will come back as tampered or something. I might be wrong but I'm sure someone can back me up on this. This is one of the big reasons PSA vintage is much more collectable over BGS.

Make sure they are not sheet cut cards before you submit to PSA.

ok. let' ssay the card is not a sheet cut, so the odds is pretty close to 100% that it'll be graded PSA 10?

It's still subject to the discretion of the grader. I'd bet that the odds are close that it'll cross over well, but if they do determine that the 9.5 is sheet cut (which I would also bet the odds on that are pretty high too), you'll be out your grading fee.

Should be a pretty neat experiment...I'd be interested in the results if you're willing to share.

Just to give some reference, look at the 79-80 OPC set:

BGS 9.5

Total 9.5: 314
Total Graded: 2335
BGS 9.5 Total %: 13.45%

PSA 10:

Total 10: 96
Total Graded: 9093
PSA 10 Total %: 1.06%

From this data you can see a 1274% higher incidence of BGS 9.5's over PSA 10's. Almost 13:1!!

It's either 2 things, or both:
  • PSA grades harder than BGS
  • BGS will grade cut sheets where PSA won't.

Either way, using historic data and statistical evaluation as a gauge, less than 1 in every 12 1979-80 BGS 9.5 would grade a PSA 10.

Data from PSA, BGS pop reports.

i'm pretty sure mine is not a sheet cut.. it has typical opc cut on it, kind of surprised that the edge on that card would got 9.0 actually.

i might have it cross graded. specifically to have the sheet cut issue taken care of.. when/if i do cross grade it i'll throw pictures up here ; )
