CANUCKS (26-14-3) at LIGHTNING (17-20-3)

TV: SNET-P (HD), SUN (HD)

Last 10: Vancouver 6-3-1; Tampa Bay 5-4-1.

Season Series: This is the lone meetings between the teams. They last faced each other on Dec. 11, 2010, when Tampa Bay earned a 5-4 overtime win against Vancouver at Rogers Arena.

Big Story: Canucks coach Alain Vigneault came up just short in his bid to be a part of the coaching staff at the 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game in Ottawa. Due to Vancouver's 2-1 loss at Florida on Monday night, Vigneault was edged out by San Jose's Todd McLellan for the job.

The spot was determined by which team had the greatest points percentage in the Western Conference through Monday's games.

It hurts my heart to see that our goalie tonight won't be with the team long term. Instead, we will be stuck with that grease ball that can't win when it counts.

Hansen with his thirteenth goal; I'm loving his play this year. He continues to impress me. Eleven different Canucks with a point so far. I'd say that's pretty balanced scoring.

i really hope that, but i dont think schneider wants to be a backup for another 2 years

I think Gillis can convince him to stick around for a couple more cup runs. If Schneider outplays Luongo and wins a Cup, then he'll have a huge payday afterwards. I foresee Canucks playing Luo/Schnieder 51/31 games to keep them sharp and rested for the playoffs.

Since he's still a restricted free agent, Canucks have the the option to match. Any team offering over 3.15 mil/year has to give up a 1st and a 3rd round pick. Anything less is a 2nd round only, I think.

If you play around on capgeek.com.

That's assuming Raymond signs back at the same amount, and Salo retires. There is a chance that the Canucks don't offer Raymond a qualifying offer and he re-signs back for less. Salo could re-sign for cheap.

The other scenario is to trade Ballard for picks or prospect, sign Salo for $2 mil again, keep Raymond. And there's still $2 mil in cap room.

If Schneider resigns at $2 mil/yr, then there's enough cap space to re-sign Salo at $2 mil, and Raymond at his current contract.

Schneider has to get an offer sheet, AND he has to sign it, which means that he's happy with the terms of the contract. I'm sure he'll get tons of offers at $2 mil. Not sure about $3.15, especially when there's cheap UFA options like Montoya, Emery and Elliott. Also, $3.15 mil will make Schneider the 18th highest paid goalie. Remember Niemi got less than $2 mil from SJ after winning a Cup with Chicago, and is only making $3.8 mil now. Not a lot of demand for goalies right now.

Tampa needs goaltending bad, but since Yzerman played for the Wings, he knows that you don't have to spend a ton of money on an elite goalie to win the Cup if you got a good defensive corp to go with it. Plus an elite goalie without a good defense is not that great (see Buffalo).

And Ballard could always be buried in Chicago as well if need be.

yes. I'm not completely clear on the waiver stuff, but there could be a strategic time to place Ballard on waivers and send him down. It could be on the very last minute on the last day for final rosters. That way it'd be hard for other teams to pick him up b/c the other team would have to put another guy on waivers, etc.

If he clears, all the better. Then he can be buried until the playoffs, assuming Ballard doesn't get all bitter about it.

If Salo is loyal to the Canucks, he can wait to see what all happens before deciding on a cap friendly amount to sign for. I think he has until Dec. 1 or something to sign as an UFA.

Okay - two things.

A) I hate the shootout

B) Okay, seriously what the heck is the rule on "distinct kicking motion" - the goal that was allowed today for TB is fine, but has been disallowed twice when the Sedins do pretty much the same thing. However, in the Pens/Sens game, the Sens 4th goal was in my mind clearly a distinct kicking motion but it was allowed as well.

I really think the NHL should allow any goals where the skate blade is (fully/mostly, the rule can be more specific if need be) on the ice. That takes out the risk of a player kicking someone in the shins (part of the reason for the rule) trying to kick the puck in and if a player has the body control to do this, more power to them.

Ditto. That's why I am proud to say I have never, and will never, watch one.

Ohhhhh, it's exciting.

Ohhhhh, it's great to have a winner.

Ohhhhh, it makes the games more meaningful.

Let me ask you this:

If the shootout is so freaking wonderful, how come they don't use it in the playoffs?

If the shootout is a 'great way to end a game,' then how come they only use regulation/overtime wins in case of a tie in the standings?

I have also given up trying to determine how they decide if a goal off a skate was kicked or not.

I would have no problem if they used the shootout in the playoffs. They could still play one 20 minute OT period. In my opinion triple OT is worse than a shootout. Nothing worse than your team completely exhausted after one round of playoff because every game lasts 5 hours. The quality of the game goes down hill when the players are dehydrated and fatigued.

Change can be good Randy hahaha
