Jersey detectives...could use some help on this Mario, svp

I have had this rather fetching Mario Lemieux card from the 00-01 UD SPx product for several years, and the coloring of the jersey has been a question of mine since day 1:

I have several Penguins jerseys (CCM stuff, not full gamers...I wish), and have checked out the web, and can not find ANY jersey that the Pens have used - practice or regular gamer - that would provide a swatch with red/black like we have on this card. I know, the stock answer is "it's UD, so it's probably from a Yashin Senators jersey...who knows??"...Perhaps this is from a special jersey worn by the Pens some time prior to 2000? Perhaps to commemorate their decade o' dominance :p ? The SWB Pens jersey would give this color combo, but I really doubt that Superman ever played in the minors... ;)

Any thoughts? Perhaps this item has been brought up before, if so I appologize...but I'm dying to know!
 
What does it say on the back of the card, Official game worn jersey in a NHL game? Photo Shoot?

I guess it could be team canada jersey.. depending on what the back of the card said.
 
Sorry, I should have scanned the back as well...here is the language, exactly as it's stated:

"You have received a Mario Lemieux Game-Used jersey/stick trading card from the Upper Deck Company, LLC. On the front of the card is an authentic piece of a jersey and hockey stick used by Mario Lemieux in an official NHL game. We hope you enjoy this piece of NHL history...blah blah blah...continue to keep you as cloase as you can get!"

No mention of anything other than "official NHL game". Not that it matters, since it could have come from a team Canada jsy and they didn't bother proofing the back text. I checked online for Team Canada stuff, and I didn't see any black on their jerseys prior to 2000...hmmmm...
 
Only problem there though is , the set came out pretty much a year and a half before the Olympics in 02. Definitely another head scratcher. Hope you can find out, I've liked watching these pieces come up and everyone try to figure out what is up.
 
I enjoy it as well, however this time the mystery is mine and it's driving me nuts! :) I need Vegas to see this thread and give me some input; he seems to know exactly where to look for these things. I've used the regular tools - team websites, Google, etc...no dice.
 
Another thought, could it be from a 1991 or 1993 All-Star Jersey, did he play in either one of those? I've seen the same type of colors on Gretzky cards and those are the jerseys that are used. I guess the other question is does UD have a 1991 or 1993 All-Star Jersey of Lemieux.
 
I dont think either of those are from Mario ....I dont ever recall him using a stick with gold on it like that and the jersey maybe team canada maybe somethin else but .... who knows

Probably not the one either, as Lemieux was not on the 98 team in Nagano. Jeez, I can kill the options pretty good, maybe I should start looking for some answers too? :)
 
That definitely is Bauer Flow-Knit, but where that might have come from is a different story.
 
Hmmm... 00/01. Wasn't that the year of Mario's return? Did he even have jersey cards before that? UD bought one of the first gamers and did a cross promotional Mario Returns jersey set, but there definitely wasn't any swatches like that!

I think you may have to settle for the not a swatch of the player depicted unfortunately.

I vaguely remember something like this being discussed at the expo about 2 years ago at the ITG booth.
That is however, all that I remember about it.
 
Well, it can't be an NHL jersey, Nike wasn't involved with the Pens that year or for that matter, any year
 
Thanks for the input. How can UD screw up a jersey for a player like this? Well, I seem to recall a similar snafu with a Howe / Gretzky jersey in 03-04 SPGU, so it can happen to the best of them. Thanks again,
 
Could be an NHL All-Star jersey; worn in an official NHL game.
I had a Mike Bossy GU from SP that was black, and I was trying to think of when Bossy wore a black jersey. Couldn't rember one. Did a little reading (on the back of the card) and it stated that it was a jersey worn in an NHL All-Star game?

This is plausible. On the other hand, it also may just be a screw up from UD, but I'm an optimist, so I will go with the my first suggestion.

Oh yes, that's it! And "creative freedom"...I love it! - that's a great way to describe their co-mingling of pieces of hockey history... :)
