What better day to get inspired to finally post my Joel Ward Collection than on MLK Day.
In the beginning we have to go back to October 2009. I'm roaming in Philadelphia to catch four Springsteen shows, the schedule allows me to head down to DC to do the sights and catch a pair of games (Sharks and Preds) which was a dream come true being an Ovi fan. Funny enough, I managed to catch Ward in the same picture (100% certain it was Ovechkin I was looking to get a snap of).
This was a special night since Ovechkin scored his third goal of the game during the SO, so hats came flying in even though it wasn't a true hattrick. Braden Holtby made his debut as back-up as well.
Roll six years forward to April/May 2015, a non-Springsteen related trip brings me to New York and three straight nights (Caps, Clapton, Caps) at Madison Square Garden. The Capitals are in town so take my money. It's the playoffs and Ward is and has been on my favorite team now for a few seasons. He scores this last second GWG from Ovi in the first game (even though I was quite excited to witness true OT hockey for the first, but the sight of Rangers fans exciting the building was pure gold) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoVPMu6RTMU&ab_channel=superjuan
...and finally, roaming the West Coast in March 2016 to see, yes, you guessed it, I noticed on the schedule that Ovi & co will be in San Jose the day before Springsteen has a show in Oakland. It was a bit of trip from San Francisco down there, but there wasn't any question of not going to see the boys when there was a chance. This time Ward is dressed in teal to my disappointment. He had an assist. To make things even weirder, it was Nabokov appreciation night who was the starting goaltender at my first ever game.
Roll some time ahead (probably around 2018), needing something or someone to collect, I came to the realization that during my seven NHL games (six up to 2016, all Caps games) I had seen Ward play for three different teams (four games total) all in relation to my favorite one. I thought this coincidence was a sign from the stars, so here goes:
