Leafs re-sign Cody Franson

The Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to terms with restricted free-agent defenceman Cody Franson to a one-year, $2 million contract. In 45 games last season, Franson scored four goals and a career high 25 assists, with a plus-8 rating.

Good deal for the Leafs, they'll even retain his rights next summer when they can use the expected cap increase to sign him longer term. Franson gets a marginal pay bump this year, but if he stays healthy (70-74 games minimum) and his numbers meet or exceed those of last season, then he should be set up to get the $4M/yr that he was initially looking for.

Excellent signing. It's amazing how bad everything Burke did (according to hockey fans) but the Leafs are now reaping the benefits. He moved all those unmovable bad contracts and got prospects and DP and turned the team around. Don't get me wrong everything isn't perfect but he got players of worth now plus some good young players.

good for Nonis. Both Kadri and Franson contracts are close to the amount that I thought they would sign them for, despite what the initial demands were.

Nonis stuck to his guns b/c he was actually in the position of power. He also has the fact that there are many players that would like to play for the Leafs, so he doesn't cave to the players demands.

The Oilers on the other hand...

I agree. Hopefully more GMs and players stick to this type of contract. Seems to be working well esp since teams are finding it a tight cap.

So where does that put them against the cap now? Are they over, under, or right at it?

They are slightly over, I think it is just under 217,000

Their problem now is, their non-roster players actually have bigger cap hits than Trevor Smith, Joe Colborne, and Frazer McLaren. That's an 'ouch' to some degree, because those guys basically have to play during the first ten game of the season because of Clarkson's stupidity.

If it wasn't for those damn buyouts from a few years back, and the retained salaries from last year, they'd have room to spare.

Something has to 'give' still.

I'm guessing that will be JM Liles, if they can find a taker?

That would definitely solve their problem. However, you'd have to find a team that is willing to take a 3.875 hit for three more years for a player who is nowhere near worth that much. So, you need a team that has to make the ceiling. And, guess what? There aren't any. Even the Islanders are at the minimum, IIRC.

So, you need a team that for some reason wants Lilies, and they're going to want Toronto to retain a good chunk of salary - something I'd think Nonis does not want to do. Similar to the rumoured Luongo to Toronto trade last year. He wanted Van to retain cap hit - they wouldn't go for it.

If Nonis somehow pulls this off, great for him.
