NHL out of 2022 Olympics

I'm baffled by the decisions most governing bodies make. When Covid was really doing some serious damage, international travel was pretty lax, vaccination restrictions were pretty lax, and so forth, allowing the virus to spread easily and kill many. Now, with a huge amount of the population vaccinated against a variant that has shown to be highly transmissible yet very mild in comparison to it's predecessors, leagues are shutting down, provinces are locking down, travel is being banned from some countries, etc.

Similar to how I don't understand what is being accomplished by banning travel from a country with significantly fewer cases when the variant is already in your country, I don't know what skipping the Olympics will do for a bunch of athletes who have already been sidelined by the virus.

I just got back from Tanzania and I'd prefer to be there instead of this crap, and that's coming from someone who really supported a whole bunch of the lockdown stuff before. At this point it just seems silly.

This new supposed variant is nothing more than the yearly common flu or cold bug, but hey, anything to keep the narrative and control of the sheep I guess. As far as the NHL players go, honestly, I thought the PyeongChang Olympics with the non-NHL squads was highly entertaining and I am totally fine with it again this time. I’d prefer the Olympics to be non-paid pros in all sports from here on out.

Me being a scientist. I totally get this and agree with them not participating. It sucks as a fan.
I would love to see them move it out by a year perhaps but not sure if that even possible.
I do enjoy seeing the amateur/non-pros as well though.

Keep the pros out of the Olympics. Propping up that band of pompous gold diggers has always been a terrible decision. Why in the heck the IIHF can’t stage a proper world tournament is beyond ridiculous.

Good riddance and hopefully the NHL never gets in bed with the IOC again.

Agree with this, the games were supposed to be for amateurs to begin with.
Dan.

I believe the entire Olympics should be cancelled. I also believe that all sports affected by a shut-down any year/season should have an asterix * beside the stat where at the bottom it would say - * Affected by Covid-19.

It would have to state in the History Books that all sports were affected by COVID for those periods of time.

I don't see how it can be a lock saying some athlete is the best in the world for that 4 year period when 10-20% of a single sport's athletes didn't compete due to covid.

That being said I thought they should have cancelled olympics for nhl a long time ago. The Olympics a great, but I would rather see the NHL try to complete a full season. going to the Olympics would have taken 4 weeks off the schedule.

The whole Olympics will be cancelled soon....just watch.

This would be my current guess. Beijing 2023.

Springsteen was supposed to release Euro-dates a month ago for Europe (May-July), but they were pushed back due to Omicron breaking out, but what can you do?

Preach.

You can keep your SLC and Vancouver Gold medals. The most exciting gold medal game for me was in '94 at Lillehammer when Canada lost to Sweden, coincidentally, the last Olympics before we started sending pros.

This was the right move. I have 3 family friends affected by this virus. It's a dangerous time folks, stay safe, wash hands often.

Moving out the Olympics is a smart move if they do it.

THIS!!!

Sorry but I just don't understand the positions about NOT cancelling NHL participation. You see what's happening to the regular NHL schedule - and now the WJC. It's not only about the players affected - it's about what happens when the healthy bring it home to parents, grandparents and the like. Agree with the vaccine or disagree - I don't really care - but if you think that the newest variation transmission rate is just like the flu - you are in for another story.

so true, my brother and sister in law, both who are extremely careful, have it. Both are in theirs 40's and in good shape, and they have both said how bad it is and how it hangs on. 1 good day and then 2 bad ones.

I'm fine with them pulling out of the Olympics. Hopefully they can bring back the world cup of hockey so we get best on best tournament.
