You have to check out the description in this auction. Not sure if you all remember, but this card was listed a week to days ago in an auction by Beckett and A LOT of people wondered how this patch would be considered LEGIT so they ended the auction before it eneded.

Now I was bored at home and decided to do some searching on eBay for anything exciting and run into this card again.....

http://cgi.ebay.com/2005-06-Cup-ALE...t=US_Hockey_Trading_Cards&hash=item53e16cb88a

Check out the back of the card and the description noted by Beckett.....How UD confirmed that this card is LEGIT. The card clearly states on the back that it is a game worn patch worn by Ovechkinin a game. So now Upper Deck and Beckett come out and legitimizes this card and to quote them exactly........

" We have confirmed the authenticity of this patch with Upper Deck, as an authentic swatch from a throwback jersey worn by Ovechkin during a rookie photo shoot prior to, or during the 2005-06 season. The Reebok logo is red, because the jersey worn during the photo shoot was a Washington Capitals throwback jersey, which were red, white and blue from the 1974-75 to the 1994-95 style"

Are you kidding me........

So now is every Ovy rookie from The Cup a photo shoot rookie or is it an actual game worn jersey? How on earth can you believe ANYTHING they tell you is beyond me.....

Keep buying UD products folks......
This is just way too over the top for me!!!

Yes, I agree 100%........ was confused by the description as well. My opinion, way too much money involved here as the card pushes $500 mark in first couple days of auction for UD to make major mistakes and false claims on back of card. I think there is a difference in value between a gamer and one used for photo shoot, what does everyone think?

So....

Does this mean that at one time the card DID contain a "a patch from a jersey worn by Alexander Ovechkin in an official NHL game" and that this Reebok patch is "custom made".

Or that UD falsely certified this card and has now admitted to it?

Hmmm.

Does it really matter?

You can fit the credibilities for Upper Deck and Beckett into a thimble and still have room to spare. That hasn't changed, and isn't going to get better any time soon.

They could be stacking the bullcrap at each other's offices 50 feet high, and neither side would notice or care.

And we've seen that the ramifications for being lousy are... well, there are none.

So to answer Jeremy's question directly: It doesn't make a lick of difference.

OK so UD says it is a photo shoot throwback jersey AO wore?
Is it just me or isn't this the ONLY retro colors we have seen on his cards before this season when UD started cutting up the current red/blue jerseys?

What a total load of *&^%% Just makes glad I only do ITG know.
Jason

didn't even know Reebok made throwbacks from the 70s 80s or 90s.

Washington never had 3rd jerseys either so what the hell is going on here? That RBK logo is clearly from a modern jersey.

Here is my 2 cents worth

I originally posted this fake patch thread when the listing came out.

I emailed the seller.

"Excuse me but i think you are selling a FAKE patch there gentlemen. Here is link to hockey jersey uniform database http://nhluniforms.com/
Please tell me you see a maroon Reebok vector on white for 2005/06 Washington jerseys. It looks more like a Reebok vector from 2005/06 Phoenix white jersey or 2007 east all star jersey. I know you guys do not authenticate patches when grading but come on that card is screaming FAKE. You are doing yourselves as well as the hobby a disservice by trying to sell that card.
Cheers Joel "

There was no reply from the seller but the listing was ended shortly there after.

Now the card is listed again i see and they have changed the wording of the listing.

Let us examine the facts.
1. I contacted one of the biggest Ovechkin collectors on the planet and showed him the listing and he agreed with me it looks fake.He has had 12-15 different copies of the 05/06 Ovechkin limited logos none with those colors.
2. I have seen many!!!! Cup cards at shows , on ebay and message boards and have never seen a RBK logo on any 05/06 limited logos. If someone has an 05/06 limited logs with a RBK logo please correct me if you would.
3.The colors are not correct even if it was Washington throw back. I do not believe or accept their web of lies that it is from a RBK throw back jersey of Washington. If it were from an 05/06 jersey i would say it would be from Phoenix white jersey or 2007 East all star jersey.
To me it is a shade of maroon like the two jerseys i mention above. Please correct me if i am wrong.

Beckett has graded fake patches in the past and now sells them. Why would they not they have no morals scruples or knowledge. I am not going to bother emailing them again as they have found lie they will spew as a response if they bothered to reply.
To me this is just another fake patch being pawned off to the masses

I'm looking online for Washington Capitals throwback jerseys by RBK and as far as I can tell, no such thing exists.

All "throwback" Capitals jerseys I can find are made by CCM.

The only time RBK ever made a jersey of the C-A-P-I-T-A-L-S logo where red/white/blue were the standard colours was from 2007 onwards. Everything else that fits the red/white characteristics of this patch do not match to the time frame of the card or to RBK's involvement in these particular jerseys

And I am not 100% sure about this, but RBK is not in the business of throwback jerseys.

To add to all that, why is this ONE patch from 05-06 using a red/white patch from either a modern or throwback jersey when all Ovechkin patches (as far as my research indicates) from that point onwards to 08-09 cards all use the blue/black/tan coloured swatches from those Washington jerseys before the switch to their current red jerseys?

Even if it is a fake patch, why the hell would Upper Deck certify to Reebok that they made a mistake and that the patch used was from a photo shoot jersey and NOT a game used jersey as stated on the back? How much doubt can you add to your own practices with one stupid move like that?

Keep buying their **** folks. Stuff like this is why I stopped.

Seems fishy as all hell to me.

I tried to call Reebok to ask some questions about the throwback jerseys but their offices are closed on the weekend, and they don't have an email :(

What a joke of a company. No way in hell that patch came from a game-used jersey like the card says and no way in hell that patch came from a vintage jersey like UD and Beckett say so what's the deal?

All vintage jerseys were tagged as CCM's not RBK's and the only time the Caps wore vintage jerseys was during the pre-game warmup for Mike Gartner's retirement night ceremony. Those jersey's were tagged as CCM's as well.

Everybody who continues to support this company by buying Ice and whatever else is coming up needs to give their heads a shake.

So can someone.....anyone please explain to me "Why on earth would Upper Deck go and put on the back of the 05-06 Limited Logo card.... that this is a game used patch from an Ovy jersey worn in an nhl game" and then Beckett fires off the explanation in their description that IN FACT they contacted Upper Deck and it's from an official throwback practice/photoshoot jersey???

Doesn't this seem like it's the absolute 100% the wrong thing to do here?

I mean these are 2 big companies stating this and are mixed up in this whole mess. One says that it's not what it says on the back of the card and the other one says this is what UD said so we slabbed it. Since an UD rep is admitting that it's not an actual game worn piece but a photshoot jersey am I the only one who sees the magnitude of this whole fiasco?

Isn't it worth buying it and suing them? As the card in question is not the actual game used patch used in explantion on the back of the card, but an actual throwback jersey? And the supposedly are admitting it?

This has an eerie feeling to it...

Agree with this statement here. I have not seen one other patch card from that year that was red. Not a one. so who do you believe? Beckett, who is trying to sell the card fora profit? Or Beckett, who is claiming UD certified the card? I don't see UD making any statements here, I see Beckett making unconfirmed claims about UD certifying the card. UD made a big deal that year about using real GU pieces for all Crosby and Ovechkin cards, so quite frankly, I think Beckett is full of crap on this one.

Beckett is so full of crap...and obviously don't seem to care about collectors.
There is no doubt in my mind that this card is definitely fake and graded by the all-mighty after the fact, which just makes them look like a company trying to make a quick buck and a tidy profit.

No surprise really as everyone I know, including myself, cancelled their Beckett subscriptions a long time ago.

I actually emailed Beckett to get the contact info of the guy from UD to see who legitimized this patch and I'm still waiting for a response. I'm just curious as to see what they say.......
