The Stadium will be 30 next April and I am also retiring after 35 years in my real job in December so I thinking seriously about running the shop full time for one year and then putting it up for sale. We want to travel - anyone who knows me knows we do the Caribbean a couple times a year and Hawaii on occasion. We want to see Canada bad and are planning 4 month road trips.... The off to the southern states.

So in 2020 - not this year or next... but this gives you time to put some real thought to the matter (if interested), i think i will sell the store (accounts and all)

Cost of a home in our area is great ($150 to under $300,000 (3 bedroom, 2 bath, garage) and is within 1 hour drive of Windsor, Sarnia and London (3 solid OHL cities). These cities contribute to our customer base as collectors are collectors along with the city of Chatham and the tri-county area.

Great location (4 unit strip mall with a Subway (ample parking) and 1 block from Tim Hortons) on tourist route (#3 highway which runs along north shore of Lake Erie) and great rent. 6 showcase layout in a 16x40 unit (single bathroom, storage area and sorting area.

We are very much a sports card shop. Although we do carry packs of gaming cards, the focus is sports with one of the largest inventory of OPC you will see in a card shop and a great selection (an entire wall (36 feet) of storage boxes) of singles past to present. Packs, boxes and cases! And to top it all off, we have great loyal customers with new collectors showing up all the time - come check it out - and see for yourself.

Certified Diamond Dealer and Authorized UD Group Breaker. Accounts with all the distributors and direct account with Leaf/ITG

What makes this an interesting opportunity for someone - we don't have an eBay store nor do we spend time and/or effort right now on Internet sales. We are also only open 35 hours a week - not 9-5 7 days a week. Our revenue is 95% walk in business. the store has three employees (2 are students) so salaries are very manageable. Your potential salary is based on expectations and your drive (remember we are only open 35 hours a week - imagine how much you can make opening 9-5 everyday and having an online presence)!

LOL - I love the questions we are getting.

This is absolutely my dream... how do you do it with another full-time job?

Sad to see you go but happy that you're getting a chance to travel and retire!

Owning a sports card store is my dream job. I have no shame admitting that.

Danny - still 2 years away - just planting a seed for anyone who may enjoy running an established card shop someday.

The plan is to run it full time for one full year to show the potential buyer the fiscal opportunities.

Funny part is, I have people begging me to open in Chatham and have another group asking me to partner with them in Sarnia. I want to retire and I am getting people begging me to expand.....

[edit]

Thank you everyone for the kind words...

And to dj's observation and comments on the advantages of an established shop, we are looking at this as a job interview where we will be reviewing the potential of the perspective owners - not the highest bid as we want what actually started in 1985 in Tilbury Ontario (and then I was told by my employer a store was a conflict of interest) and I then sold to one of the guys Who used to coach me in intermediate hockey in 1989. In 1999, they reversed the conflict decision so I bought back into my store and ultimately bought Jim out in 2003 so he could enjoy his retirement.

I want this store to be open another 30 years - it has been structured to be self sufficient and I am not kidding about reviewing the potential of perspective buyers.

If it was about money - I would just have an auction sale!

So, if you have a love for sports, enjoy interacting with great people and want to run a fun card shop - you have 2 years to prepare.

Can you say... FRANCHISE? :)

Best of luck Scott - like others, it's something I would love to do one day.

If anyone is serious about doing this, buy into an established shop. It will help with potential allocation issues in the future.

I opened up a shop in August of last year and even though I have been open for over a year, I am starting to get cut on products that I was able to get without a problem last year. It seems most new shops (last three years) are running into that issue, but the established shops have not had to worry about it as much.

Good luck in the future Scott!
