RNH signs $6M/year extension

The newest $6 million dollar man. They are paying on potential obviously, I just wonder if he will be able to stay healthy for an entire season. He's only 20, I think they brought him up way too fast. One look at the guy and you can see physically he was not built for the pounding you take in the NHL, at least not yet.

Is any player worth it? It's a smart move ......... he'll bring in ticket sales and merchandise sales too. It's a lot better than Lowe's previous long term signings. Horcoff and Khabibulin were too long imo.

I'm not from Edmonton, but I find it odd that RNH would spur ticket sales? Is he really that popular there? Personally he would be the one young player that I would trade to get some proven help, as I foresee an injury riddled disapointing future for him and would deal him sooner than later.

My best,

ken

Seems be the going rate. Lots of talent but early career injury issues make him questionable. I guess on raw talent and age it seems about right for a talented young first over all pick. I agree that he was brought up to early especially since they were/are in a rebuild, what was the rush with bringing him up. Lock them up now seems to be the Oilers idea, lets hope it works out for them.

Anyone who has seen this kid play knows how special he is. He, probably, will not out score Hall and Eberle but I could see him leading the league in point for many years. The kid is a magician! He has the best hands I have seen come up in the last 20 year. Could this signing backfire, its possible, but the potential really outweighs the risk!!!

With the younger crowd yes. Don't get me wrong, players like Hall and Eberle will gather the most attention but as a young raw talent, RNH primarily gains most attention at the moment.

Bossy said it best and also the reason they brought him up sooner than later. He's super talented. Signing anyone for that kind of money is a huge risk. Always will be. In today's NHL a "proven" player won't stay in Edmonton let alone sign for cheaper.

Locking him up longterm was a smart move.

Considering that the Oilers had no leverage or anything in negotiating a contract with a player that has 22 goals in 100+ NHL games just coming off his entry level deal, this is probably the best deal they could have gotten.

Do I really need to put on a /sarcasm disclaimer?

Pete (Bossy22) said it best, we saw him a bunch of times in RedDeer and the kid is just plain good, and yes you will say that it was junior hockey, but you can see it on the ice as well in the NHL, the kid is a stud, hopefully the injuries dont overtake him

Reports indicate his shoulder surgery will finally allow him to play at 100%. It's a procedure that's been done many times before with solid results. Now, given the precedent that been's set with the big 3, it's pretty much a given that Yakupov will get his $6M as well (interesting to see what Schultz gets next year). I guess the term 'bridge contracts' is not in the Oilers' vocabulary.

But I do like RNH; talented kid who should be more than capable of earning his pay.

At some point they have to do something about their defense/goaltending deficiencies and I could see one of Eberle/Hall/RNH being involved in a trade within the next two years to improve those areas. For Edmonton's sake I hope these players perform up to their pay grade so that the Oilers can get something tangible in return.

Smart move....period! For raw talents like RNH, especially one's drafted 1st overall..it was expected to be signed at this contract level.
On another note, after seeing per-season play so far, the 13-14 Oilers are going to be even more exciting and dangerous.

The help on defence is coming, and I, as an Oiler fan, don't believe that there is a problem in goal. Dubnyk has been solid the last 1 1/2-2 years, and with some better play in front of him, I think he will be fine. It is worth noting that he has been in the top 20 in save % each of the last two years. As for defence, adding Andrew Ference will be a huge help, and they have the prospects with Darnell Nurse, Oscar Klefbom, Martin Marincin, David Musil and Brandon Davidson to name a few. Put those guys together with Ladislav Smid, who is a very good defenceman who gets very little credit - being a plus player on a last place team isn't easy, as well as Justin Schultz, there is the makings of a very respectable D core there.

As for Nuge's contract, I don't mind it. He is a world-class playmaker who has a couple of proven goal-scorers (Hall, Eberle) to play with for the next 6 years or so. As for the shoulder injury, I don't think that will be an issue. People forget that Taylor Hall had the exact same injury, as well as the exact same surgery, and he is fine. The same should hold true for RNH. Can't wait to watch the Oilers this year, I'm hoping for some playoffs at last.

I think the real question is will he stay healthy? Also, what do you do with the Yak, Schultz, etc with all of these young players on big long term contracts?

Being born in the 70's and following the Dynasty Oilers through the 80's I have a soft spot for the Oilers. I love the young team they have put together and I think they should have locked up these young studs. I think they should trade Nail for some help on D or for an upgrade in net but I would lean more towards a big D.

anyone else think he needs a solid 15-20lbs on his frame? regardless, i hope he does well, and not just because i have a nice auto card of his haha.

.

This is the first thing I thought when seeing this deal. Maybe they are scared to lose him after the bridge deal but this doesn't make a ton of sense to me - I guess the talent is there and that is what they are gambling on but this kind of deal is the reason for lockouts and the reasons GMs get canned.

Don't get me wrong, this could end up being an OK deal, but IMO is has a better chance of becoming an anchor. The kid can play and can certainly be a $6mil player, but he could also get hurt or end up putting up 52 points.

We shall see how this one turns out - but we can pretty much guarantee another stoppage coming.

Exactly, the new market inefficiency is giving long term high $ contracts to any play who shows the least bit of ability after two years in the NHL. A lot of these contracts will blow up in these teams faces, Coming soon lockout 2020.

My best,

Ken

I think the Oilers are rushing their players. That's why RNH has been injured so often. CBJ rushed Brule, who was also a small skilled player. Got a ton of injuries, lost confidence and hasn't lived up to his potential. Hall looked had more of a man's body. RNH, although oozing with skill, still has a boy's body.

Eberle was the only one that didn't jump right in. But with their #1 picks, they've rushed them all. The bar has been set with term and dollars. Yakupov will want to get a 7 year extension at the same amount. Schultz could too since he's a RFA next year.

So after next year, 5 players could be getting paid a total of $30M. With the other existing contracts, it's $48.6M for 10 players.

In three years, Gagner and Perron become UFAs. If either of them out-perform the other guys, they'll be asking for similar or more money.

The only thing that will save the Oilers from the cap crunch is if the cap jumps right up to $70M after the freeze is lifted. Even then, the bottom 6 would only getting paid an average of $1.5M (2 years from now), Nurse and Klefbom have to be on the team (entry level contracts), Petry has to be re-signed with no raise, $4M can only be designated for #1G and backup.

Hopefully the owners see numbers that we don't.

Plus what happens if Eberle gets offered crazy money at age 28-29 as a UFA?
