Sens extend Karlsson for 7 years...

He's got a lot to live up to now. Let's hope he doesn't crumble under the pressure...

Now, let's get Spezza that scoring winger!!!

They said the same thing about Doughty and he made out pretty good ;)

Good signing by the Sens.

Doughty had help and he won a Gold medal in the Olympics that helped to his riches.

Im sorry but how does a D man make 6.5 million and does not play on the penalty kill???? This is just crazy to give to the kid. Is he going to win the Norris, probably. Does he deserve to be paid more than the likes of Chara, Lidstrom and Weber. Nope. I think the Sens really did terrible negotiating.

I think if you have a young defensemen that you believe can be an all around player shortly and, in the meantime, leads all NHL defensemen in scoring by a gap of 25 then he is likely worth it.

Ask yourself this...
How much would a 22 year old forward who just scored 78 points and is in the running for a major NHL trophy going to cost to sign? I don't think $6.5 is unreasonable.

Karlsson could kill penalties but Ottawa choses to use his time on ice when there is offensive opportunities.

I think the contract is fair for both sides but only time will tell how fair it actually is.

The cap could move up to almost $74 million next year, which averages out to $3.7M per on a 20 man roster. How is $6.5 for 7 seven years for a top d-man not a good deal?

Except it isnt for 6.5 mil, its for 45 mil. Which is a terribly large sum to commit to one guy who has proven nothing beyond one good year.

Offensive minded dmen are fairly common, and they come and go very easily. Im not writing him off as one of them just yet, but once teams know how to play him, he will be useless. Hope he doesnt turn into another Brian Campbell or Mike Green ....

All long term contracts are gambles. There's no guarantee any player will perform up to expectations, be it a one-season wonder or a 10-year veteran.

So are you, in turn, disappointed with the Rangers commitments to Richards and Gaborik?
Both have large contracts and both were outscored by Karlsson last year.

And, in contrast, should Karlsson go to the open market - how much money do you think he would be offered?

This is a great signing for the Sens. The important number is the $6.5M. Cap hit is the only thing that counts here in the hockey sense.

I'm presuming that those that are questioning the deal don't think that Karlsson is going to be an elite d-man for the next decade plus?

If he were to go to the market as an RFA he could've have easily been offered 7M+ and the Sens would have matched it in a heartbeat.

I didnt know Gabby and Richards played D, and I didnt know Karlsson had 40+ goals (or even 25+ for that matter if you want to compare MG and BR)...... :owned:

And it doesnt matter how much I think he would be offered, that wasnt my point or even my worry. EK is being given 45 million based on 1 year of good play. I dont need to say much more than that.

It was sign him now or wait until 1 Jul and see how many other teams would have offered him an even better contract. I think it was a really good deal and the Sens now have that offensive defenseman they've been looking for. He's already broken the Sens record for most points by a defenseman and has lit the light more times than any other defenseman in quite a while. He's one of the newest additions to the Sens cornerstone and he's only 22. I guess time will tell and I'm going to enjoy watching every minute of it.

Actually it was 3 years of continued improvement. This was his breakout year, but he reminds me too much of Mike Green. I just dont see a repeat performance of this season. We will see.

EXACTLY.

A defenceman outscoring your top 2 FORWARDS. Wow... have fun with that Richards contract in another couple years.

lol @ people always crying over giving anyone a big contract. He's young, he scores like a mofo, and he's STILL IMPROVING. Who wouldn't lock him up?

This. I think he has the ability to repeat, but it depends on the team's ability as well.

And for Dredder, as a Ranger fan I fondly recall a certain young and highly touted Euro Dman leading his team in points as the team won the cup for the first time in 54 years. Before your time? Well it was Sergei Zubov who led the Rags in scoring the year they won the cup. I guess that means the work of Graves, Messier, Richter, Leetch, and the like meant nothing. That attitude is why the sens (and other teams) have not won in this "team sport".

And I guess we're rusty with our numbers, 19 is less than 41 and 25. Not more........

edit: Im not reposting in this thread as too many people seem to be bitter. If you cant understand the nuances of contract bargaining, then so be it. Risk management is part of life, some people (and teams for that matter) can analyze it better than others....
