Assuming this deal is finalized...
I'm excited about this pickup. He provides a well needed goal scoring threat, so teams cannot focus on just Jagr.

I will say that I was hoping they ink Elias for a multiyear... but Shanny was at the top of my free agent shopping list as well.

Now, they just need a good skating, puck moving defenseman.

Jay no kiddin this is an awesome move. I didnt think we were even thinking about shanny. elias would have been perfect not only is he very underrated but the devils would have been lost without him lastyear. shanny is a complete surprise to me, but i love the move. our power play will be awesome. We still need a bid d-man that can skate though and there arent any left that i could think of. Chara would have been a good fit but after seeing what boston gave him i am happy we didnt get him. "old" rangers would have paid him 40mill plus i am sure hehe

Ok Vin.. you just keep collectin' your Jagr and Yer goalie and leave the Shanny To me!!!! LOL !!!!

I haven't seen him play much, but Danny Markov is still a UFA. I think he would fit the role of puck moving, PP defenseman. Though, I don't know if the Rangers are going to sign any more defensemen.

The Shanny deal is great for this year. It provides another proven goal scoring threat. It also gives the Rangers another year to develop some of their younger talent. Though, I'm surprised they aren't bringing back Sykora.

I'm wondering if they will give a legitimate shot to their Hartford guys like:

Jarkko Immonen (played a few games in NY last year)
Nigel Dawes
Alexandre Giroux

Well Jay if Shanny had to go anywhere I'm glad he's a Ranger! Hopefully he can prove the people wrong that said Datsyuk was the only reason he scored last year!! :)

Datsyuk is good... but the Rangers aren't without playmakers. Guys like Nylander and Straka serve that purpose very well... they just cannot be counted on to score 25-40 goals. That's where Shanny comes in. I'm also thinking they may give him the "C" this year since this team is lacking in the leadership department. Jagr is a great player, but he's not a typical locker room leader.

Good God, now I have to compete with Mike for Shanny Ranger loot. En garde! :p :D

This should be good for a laugh. Jagr/Shanny generic dual gj #10005 is already being printed up as we speak.

Billie i wont chase shanny but now you have to fight the big bad mike with ranger cards, all i can say is good luck :P

Jay, i agree with the "C" everyone knows on ice jagr is the leader but even he himself said an american should be the "C" of the new york rangers. granted shanny wasnt born in the US but we all know he plays like a US born player :)

I really think this will work especially vs the bigger tougher teams in the east like ott, philly, nj. shanny will help us get those garbage goals in front of the net we rarely got.

American my FOOT!!!

Meth - I think you are kidding??

What qualities of Roenick or Tkachuk or Jason Blake do you see in Shanahan?

He is a poster boy for the CHL. Play the body, fight when necessary, skates well and has an accurate heavy shot.

Typical US Player??? What rubbish.

Shanny has had a great HOF career. Having said that I think his 2006-07 stats will be about 50% of last years stats. A year older and he won't see the puck much. I simply don't think it's a good "fit". I hope I'm wrong. Mike

PS- I doubt the Rangers will have anyone wear the C this year. Shanny, Jagr and Kasparaitis will all wear A's.

If by 'American' you mean 'Canadian' then I agree with you 100%.

I could be thinking of young shanahan but i see alot of Tkachuk (before he beefed up) and Roenick. Hes willing to knock someone silly at any point during a game. I guess i should have said he plays like non european player like 98% of the rest of the rangers.

everyone you can now put the shovels and forks down.

Congrats to the Ranger's for reelin' in Shanny!

Although, I'm of the opinion that, $4 mil for a year is alot of money. However, as has been mentioned he is 'Captain!' like material!

Brian

I was a little sick at the thought of the Wings paying Shanny 4 million a year but I honestly didn't want him to go. Though now that I look at it the Wings are in need of an overhaul and now that's in process as we speak.
Here's hoping for a few more productive years out of Shanny I'll always be a fan of his..:)

Or perhaps Tkachuk and Roenick play like Shanny, since he predates both of them . . .

;)

Cripes, I'm starting to think we ought to coin a new quip for the NHL:

"Old hockey players don't die. They become Rangers or Leafs."

Sakic's just about getting to that point in his career . . .

It would have ben great to see him with the habs. Might be old but 40 goal is still impressive. Of course it woulds only have been 20 with the habs, maybe 30 with the rangers
