Stole this from another site. Show us a few cards that you thought you would never own due to either rarity or price and let us know how you finally managed to track them down. Here are my 3 stars, comments appreciated!!


#3 04-05 SPA Quad auto Naslund/Kovy/Hossa/St Louis. This came in possibly one of my easiest trades on the boards. A board member pulled this awhile back in a live break that i was watching. I jsut about pooped my pants and he said he would gladly try his best to trade it to me. He gladly accepted the first card I offered him. 3 weeks later it came back from UD

#2 An Ebay seller had this little Gem in his store for $300US. We chated for a bit and settled on what I feel to be a tremendous price of $180 Delivered via Expresspost. I never thought I would be able to afford one and was willing to pay in the low 200's for a white swatch after I sold some stuff on ebay. Needless to say, i was ecstatic to get a nice 2 color for this price.

#1 My Favorite card that I figured I would never even see. It was a White Whale for all of a week which clearly doesn't even make it a Whale. A seller listed this on Ebay and within 5 hours of the auction being up it was past 100$. I emailed him and asked him what he would end the auction for and that i was a Naslund collector and really wanted this in my PC. We settled on a Price of $250 Delivered which was in my mind another absolute steal. I told him I could send him $180 now and if he didn't mind, I could get him the other $70 the next week ( I never spend money out of my account on cards, if I want something new, I sell some stuff I already have). He told me not to worry about it and that $180 would be good enough. I was amazed, and a little bit worried that this could be one of those too good to be true moments. Well I am still looking for my true white whale 03-04 ITG VIP Rookie Debut Randy Jones. A guy I talk to every now and then has it in his collection but won't move it.

However, here is a card that I never thought I would have owned. Figured I would never see it or never afford it. Luckily for me, I negotiated with the guy that pulled it before he put it on Ebay or sold it in his B&M store.
Now if I can only find his other 3 cards that I need.

The Tier 2 Exclusives on the right hand side. Took me forever to find it, when I found someone who had it - he actually had 4 copies. I was very happy to put this collection to bed.

The one in my sig. UD botched a different hard triple auto I pulled, which had one Bruin on it and was embarassed to admit it had packed out both the redemption cards AND the actual triple autos in production (that whole, "left hand not knowing what the right hand's doing" thing).

I asked for something featuring the guys I focused on in my PC... and viola!

Sad to report that was the LAST time UD redemptions got it right for me, but still, it's a card I never figured on acquiring!

In my opinion you can only have one white whale, one card that truly drives you to the brink of insanity trying to find it, and a quest worthy of writing. Well my quest was worthy of making last months Beckett Hockey, and my white whale is a card I never DREAMED of owning... but the stars aligned and the Gods smiled upon me when I snagged this card from a fellow set collector... sure I could have used the money for a mortgage payment, a cheap used car, or season tickets to a hockey team... but none of those things matched the satisfaction I felt when I landed this beauty....

This card cost me a pretty penny and am still yet to see one on eBay. Has anyone else actually seen another one of these Modanos?

Picked this bad boy up for a VERY good deal.

Last but no least a card that I though I'd never get. By far the most I have have ever spent/plan to spend on a card. This bad boy belongs to my set in my sig. I never even thought I'd have a chance to finish it and I'm sure many other thought the same .

Great thread idea. Here mine:

This card was on my wantlist for close to 3 years. It was the last card I needed to complete my set. Its not all that expensive, or that hard to find. It just seemed when I had the money to buy one, there weren't any available. When someone would have one for trade, I wouldn't have anything for them. Well, a couple months ago I was finally able to land it.

So not too long after getting the Nash YG, I desided to pick another card from my wantlist that had been on there for ages and was a last card for a set completion. Not even 2 days after I designated this card as a white whale, I was contacted by a member who had one and I was able to add this card to my PC and completed my 1st ever master set.

So once again I went over my wantlist to find something to call a white whale. This time I found 2 cards. For a second time not even 2 days later I had them both en route to me.

I looked some years to get one of these Super High End Rookie cards for my PC. I doesn´t looked especially on the player. I wanted the feeling to own such a card. But They were always to expensive for me. I wanted a good Player but you know the prices for Premier Collection RC Patches. So some weeks ago I stopped active cardcollecting. Last weekend I was in Mannheim ( Germany ) for a hockeygame with some friends and the day after we went to a little cardshow in Viernheim, next to Mannheim. There was a seller, who sold me a 05-06 Trilogy 3 color Patch of Forsberg for only 30Euro ( 36$ ). That´s an amazing price for a Foppa Patch out of 10! So I bought it and looked over the other showcases at the show. A seller from switzerland had some nice stuff including The Cup Rookies. 2 of them were from Corey Perry. I knew they were selling on the bay at 130-170 at the moment. He ask me if I have something to trade. I said no, I don´t collect anylonger. He ask again: " really nothing? ". Then I said, that I only have the Foppa-Patch. He was so pleased and wanted the Patch. He ask me what I want for it and I told him that I like the Perry RC. With no more words he traded the cards 1:1! I was so happy to get such a card for only 36$! On saturday the Perry books at 200$. Yesterday it rised to 250$ at beckett. But all over, now I´m an owner of a great RC of a High End Product! Thanks and sorry for the long boring read.

I don't really have one white whale but I do have a list of around 10 cards that I am always looking for that are really hard to find.

This is a cheaper card but they never seem to surface. I look for it on ebay all the time and have only seen them listed twice. I grabbed this one from an ebay store, it was listed with a BIN 5 minutes after it was listed. No doubt it would have sold to another buyer within a few hours.

BTW since we are talking about white whales I am also looking for a 03-04 Topps 1st overall fabrics #MS Mats Sundin and 94 Score Check it Eric Lindros.

Words can't describe how much I loooooove this card. Originally a redemption /100 (I guarantee there are not more than 65 in circulation) this card has been my number two want (#1=Premier Rookie Patch Auto) for at least three years. These cards usually have a chipping issue on the edges (at least all I've seen) and this one is perfect! It's my prized Stany.

This one took a good 4 years of searching. It's the only card I've ever called a white whale and I grabbed it pretty cheap this summer. Still the only one I've ever seen to date.

The top card took me 2 years to find. One dealer at the Expo heard I was looking for it in 2003 and doubled the price he wanted me to pay for it. A year later one finally appeared on Ebay
