Bitter, Jaded & Disillusioned!,
Minnesota played their 20th game Wednesday; they were the last team to get there. I won't go into tons of detail with this one, but here are the standings and observations.
Atlantic
Montreal 20 14 4 2 30
Ottawa 20 10 5 5 25
Boston 20 11 8 1 23
Detroit 20 10 8 2 22
Florida 20 8 8 4 20
Tampa Bay 20 8 9 3 19
Buffalo 20 8 10 2 18
Toronto 20 7 9 4 18
Toronto has only won 3 games in regulation.
Even with 3-on-3, Ottawa has gone to a shootout 6 times (3 wins, 3 losses).
Metropolitan
NY Rangers 20 15 3 2 32
Washington 20 14 5 1 29
Pittsburgh 20 12 8 0 24
NY Islanders 20 10 7 3 23
New Jersey 20 11 8 1 23
Carolina 20 7 10 3 17
Philadelphia 20 6 9 5 17
Columbus 20 7 13 0 14
Rangers lead the league in goal differential at +25.
Philadelphia has only 3 regulation wins.
All of Columbus' games have ended in regulation.
East playoffs would be:
NYR (1) vs. NJ (wc2)
Mon (2) vs. NYI (wc1)
Ott (A2) vs. Bos (A3)
Was (M2) vs. Pit (M3)
Central
Dallas 20 16 4 0 32
St. Louis 20 13 6 1 27
Minnesota 20 11 6 3 25
Nashville 20 11 6 3 25
Chicago 20 11 7 2 24
Winnipeg 20 9 9 2 20
Colorado 20 7 12 1 15
Dallas has the most regulation wins (14) in the league.
Dallas leads the President's Trophy race.
The Central division teams have the highest points average (24) of any division.
Pacific
San Jose 20 12 8 0 24
Los Angeles 20 12 8 0 24
Arizona 20 10 9 1 21
Vancouver 20 7 7 6 20
Anaheim 20 7 9 4 18
Calgary 20 7 12 1 15
Edmonton 20 7 12 1 15
This is a weird one. SJ and LA are in an absolute tie; they have the same points, same ROW, same goal differential, and the same record head-to-head. I can't find anything that has the next tie-breaking procedure. Yes, the chances of this happening over an 82 game schedule are very remote (I figured out the odds and it's about the same as winning Lotto 6/49), but the NHL should come up with a next-level tiebreaking procedure.
I gave SJ first place because I hate the Kings...
not really - because they won the first game 5-1 and LA won the second game 4-1, so the head-to-head goal differential goes to the Sharks.
Vancouver is 0-6 in overtime. Coincidentally, they lead the league in one goal losses.
Calgary has only won 3 games in regulation.
West playoffs:
Dal (1) vs. Chi (wc2)
SJ (2) vs. Nas (wc1)
StL (C2) vs. Min (C3)
LA (P2) vs Ari (P3)
=======================================
3-on-3 OT appears to be working. At the 20 game point last year, 42 games were decided in the shootout. This season, that number has been halved to 21.
Expect more detail at the 41 game mark.
