surely those plates popped up on ebay when first year of cup was released or ? that would been weird if not.. but i never understood print plates really its nothing game used or autograph and they look weird too because they are plates..

Yeah this auction will definitely be up there. Plates, especially from UD The Cup can do well. I like how UD makes them look.

Plus this plate is for his Young Guns Rookie card. You know that will make some buyers marking this as a 'must have' for their collections. Should be fun.

As for printing plates, if they're done well like in The Cup, I don't mind them. By themselves I don't find them all that appealing compared to other cards I could pickup for the PC.

These plates were never inserted in The Cup - they were only found in Series II Hobby packs - and were pretty hard to come by in general. With them being framed like that it was also really well done.

Just FYI - Our very own Andy (The Great Zo) used to track sales of these many years ago. There's confirmed sightings of the Crosby plates but no confirmed numeric sales from his data (though it hasn't been updated in about 7 years) :

Weird seeing that Mike Cammalleri plate history too. That's my wife's user ID shown having bought it and then me on the followup. I don't know why she bought it. I may have been out of town at the time.

Not having the words "Upper Deck" and "Young Guns" in the title will keep the sale value lower than what it should be.

I do see a reason for 15 "*" :duh:

Thanks for sharing this. Some of these prices were crazy. And I have to keep reminding myself that these types of plates were so new to a lot of collectors at the time and boy did they ever sell well. UD did a great job with these plates.

Some of the sale prices are out of this world though, considering plates these days are all over the place pretty much. $400 for an Alex Steen plate? Unreal.

Yes, one thing Andy's sheet won't tell you is the history of what went on 10 years ago. Not only was Steen a Toronto rookie (which pretty well doubles the price,) but one collector was trying to chase all 4 plates and I believe not only did he do it, but he was featured in Beckett for having done so.

You're right about how special these were too. I seem to recall this being the first time UD gave up their Series I/II printing plates like this and so it was a pretty big deal and a great chase. These were definitely one of a kind (no pun in tended) and I'm sad UD didn't encase the plates the way they did in 05-06 in future years.

I love the 05-06 UD plates -- it was the first year they'd done it for the base set, so it was a huge deal. Plus, the framed design is awesome, as several people here already mentioned. After they flooded the market with plates from The Cup, and did plates in the base Upper Deck product for 07-08, 08-09, and a few of the more recent years, they're simply not as interesting to me anymore.

The seller of the yellow Crosby plate is a former Hobby Insider member.

I own three of the Kevin Weekes plates from that year -- missing only the Black.

As for the ancient data on the plate tracker? I think the Jamie Langenbrunner listings are my favorite. :D
