Media mogul David Asper is set to announce a big score in his quest to buy the community-owned Winnipeg Blue Bombers and build a new stadium.
Sources have told CBC News that "a major milestone in the history of the team" will be revealed at a press conference Thursday morning.
The press conference at 10:30 a.m. will involve representatives from the federal and provincial governments, as well as the city, University of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Football Club.
In December, Treasury Board Minister Vic Toews, Manitoba's senior cabinet member in Ottawa, said the federal government was poised to provide $15 million to the proposed $150-million project.
At the time, he said he still needed to huddle with his cabinet colleagues, but securing the money was not expected to be a problem.
Premier Gary Doer has already committed Manitoba's $15-million portion, so long as the deal comes with an ironclad assurance the team will remain in Winnipeg forever once Asper's company takes ownership.
