Third time's a charm: Colts QB Manning again wins NFL MVP award
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Peyton Manning can tell Brett Favre to move over and make room for him atop the roster of NFL Most Valuable Players.

For the third time, Manning won the award from The Associated Press, tying Favre as the only players in that elite category.

Favre, then with the Green Bay Packers, took MVP honors in 1995 and 1996 before sharing it with Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders in 1997.

"I know it's an individual award, but ... truly, in my opinion, a team award," said Manning, who received 32 votes, far ahead of Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington (4) and Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner (4). "It's been the most rewarding regular season that I've been a part of in my 11 years, and I have to believe a lot of the other players and even coaches might feel the same way."

This has been an unusual season for the Colts, who normally have the AFC South title just about clinched by Thanksgiving. Manning had two operations on his left knee in the preseason, cutting into practice time, blunting his usual precision as a passer and, eventually, leading to a 3-4 start.

From there, with Manning getting sharper by the week, the Colts won nine straight games to secure a wild-card berth and a Saturday night meeting with the San Diego Chargers.

In that streak, Manning is 209-of-290 passing for 2,248 yards and 17 touchdowns, with only three interceptions. He extended his NFL record with his ninth 4,000-yard season and finished with 27 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions and a 95.0 passer rating.

Manning called the award emblematic of what others, including Colts owner Jim Irsay, president Bill Polian and coach Tony Dungy, did to help rally the team from a 3-4 start to make the playoffs for a seventh straight season.

"I really accept this award on behalf of the team and the organization because there is no way we would be in the playoffs and bounced back without those three people creating a winning environment," Manning said after receiving the award.

"It's just been different," Manning said. "It's been an entirely different season. I think the one thing that's been inaccurate is that the seasons we were starting out 13-0, 8-0, 7-0, that it was easy. So all of a sudden this year, we are 3-4 and now things are hard. Believe me, it's never easy to win a game. I've never taken for granted winning a football game."

Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy said several times that he favored Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison for MVP -- he tied with Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson with three votes. But after Manning's flawless work in the second half of the season, Dungy, while admittedly biased, changed his mind.

"I said after we left Pittsburgh (on Nov. 9) that I would vote for James Harrison," Dungy noted this week. "If I was voting today, I'd vote for Peyton Manning."

A vast majority of the voters did.

12-4 vs 8-8.

12-4 doesn't matter, what did 12 wins get them? Did it get them home field advantage? All they did was get into the playoffs, same as the Chargers.

I'm not saying Peyton is un-deserving, I just think Rivers should have won it based off his ability to lead the team to the playoffs the way he did. LT and Gates are far more important to the Chargers then Addai and Clark are to the Colts, and LT/Gates didn't have nearly the year they could/should have because they were banged up. Rivers led the Chargers who don't have a receiving core like Wayne/Harrison/Gonzalez. Chambers, who going in was their only real "threat" at receiver was hurt a ton, so Rivers had to spread it around to a bunch of "lesser" quality receivers. Luckily Jackson stepped up or else the Chargers were a 5 win team. If you look at the numbers, Rivers was more impressive especially when you look at the receivers numbers.

Rivers Had:
1. More passing yards
2. Less pass attempts
3. More yards per game
4. More touchdowns
5. Less interceptions
6. Higher 1st down completion percentage
7. More completions 20+ yards
8. More completions 40+ yards
9. Took almost double the sacks as Peyton
10. Highest QB rating in the NFL

Like I said, congrats to Peyton but I think Rivers was more impressive and without him the Chargers maybe win 2 games. I also think Adrian Peterson, Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Chad Pennington, and a a co-award for Johnson/White in Tessessee should have received more votes then Peyton.

No one deserved it more than Manning. He took a 3-4 team on his back to 9 straight. They have no running game to speak of and a mediocre defense. Without Manning Indy is likely a 5-11 team.

I am surprised Brees didn't even get a vote. He had a better season statisctically than every other QB and finished with the same record as Rivers and 1 game off Warner and didn't have any of his weapons healthy this year. For only the 2nd 5000+ passing season in league history to not have a 1000 yard receiver or 1000 yard rusher is a feat in itself.

I believe character is also a factor. And Rivers is a horse's a$$!!

He's a sore loser and even worse when he wins.

It's one thing to toot your favorite players horn, it's another to go so homer you start making ridiculous statements.

Obviously you haven't seen Rivers feud with Cutler going as far as yelling at him during a game. And he was yelling crap about Peyton into the crowd after last years game.

I'm ecstatic Peyton won, but I am equally happy that Rivers didn't for the reasons I have stated.

As far as I'm concerned, Manning is the ONLY 3 time winner.
I dont count Favres third MVP award for this fact:

Barry Sanders did something that has only ever happened twice before, Rush for over 2,000 yards. He should'nt have had to share that award with anyone.

Rivers feud with Cutler has been going on for a few years now, it's nothing new and it's personal between them. Cutler is a jerk and Rivers calls him out on it, so what? Do you see how Cutler berates and embarrases his receivers during the game? If you want to call someone out for their character, Cutler is much more deserving. Rivalries between players in football and every other sport have been going on for decades, now all of a sudden it's a problem and the guy has no character and is a horses a$$ for it?

Peyton is one of the greatest players ever in the NFL, no one will ever doubt that, but he was (WAS) also one of the biggest whiners in the game and I have no problem with another player barking about him. He came off very smug and arrogant on the field for years so if he takes some flack for it from another player, so be it.

MVP MVP MVP................

Just kidding, good game by both defenses, Rivers looked good at times, bad at others but the Indy defense was in the backfield all night long wreaking havoc on him. Manning had a typical Manning game, but I think he got lucky as the Chargers secondary dropped 4 easy interceptions. If they hold on to a couple of those, this game would have been over and no overtime needed.

Yes they should have had 4 picks. If the COLTS had scored off of one of the 2 turnovers there wouldn't have been OT either. But it doesn't matter. The better team today won the game. Congrats!
