What does "Habs" mean?

I know its probably a really dumb question, and I can usually figure these things out. But what the heck does Habs mean? I know, the H in the C must stand for Habs but cant for the life of me figure it out. I figure it must be something French. I am sure I am the only one on these boards that does not know, so please, help me out!
 
Well actually the H in the logo stands for hockey

Habs is short for Habitants (French for settlers/inhabitants) Habs is a nickname not part of their official logo/name

Le Club de Hockey Canadien

Of course I am not a Habs fan so someone can correct me but that is fairly accurate

Huh, seems funny to me. Arent we all 'inhabitants' of something or another? Thanks for the help, thought it might be more complicated than that.
 
Habitants is the name used to refer to both the French settlers and the inhabitants of French origin who farmed the land along the two shores of the St. Lawrence Gulf and River in what is the present-day Province of Quebec in Canada

So it is a regional word per se

INdy is in fact right, Habs is a derivation from habitants (settlers) and the H in the CH does indeed mean hockey, prior to it being an H, it was an A when they were known as the club athletique canadien.
And now you know;)
 
Hmmm, I didn't know the 'H' referred to hockey. I always assumed it was for les Habitants. Interesting!

The logo is actually supposed to be 2 C's and an H for Club de Hockey Canadien... the official name of the team. Kinda like how soccer teams are FC Barcelona (Football Club of Barcelona)
 
I thought it was originally a derogatory term the Chicago owner used on the Habs. He was implying they were farmers and not hockey players...
 
Pardon my southern US idiocy when it comes to our northern neighbors, but I thought the disparaging farmer term was for the Canucks?

I worked with someone from Canada a few years back who said it was a breed of horse (easily confirmed on Google) and that Canuck was an associative term referring to farms and horses.

i believe it was actually the new york (might have been chi, but i thought I remember hearing NY) owner who upon being told that they were a bunch of french habitants began using it when refering to the montreal club.

Canuck is the native indian word for "Canadian"
