Evgeni Nabokov signs with SKA of the KHL

Surprised that he signed for 4 years...yikes. I expected him to sign for 1 year and then next year to be signed by a team desperate for a goalie ahmm...Philly.

I think the trend is starting to show that no one wants to tie up big money in a goaltender; it makes it hard for these guys who have a sense of certain worth to come down to the new reality so to speak.

It could also be that there is an out clause in the potential contract, though really, no one here is in a position to give him $6 million/ year.

Mind you, he's 34, so leaving now probably means he's done in the NHL.

From what I've been reading - there were family considerations and support for signing this deal

That's a great point. Also the fact that no team in their right mind would give him a big money offer sealed the deal for him to go to Russia

People living in North America are spoiled because the NHL is here. If I was from Russia, Europe, etc. I would probably eventually want to go home too. The money is nice and so forth but home is home when you're from another country. I don't mind when older players head for home (Nabokov, Fedorov, Jagr) because we saw their prime years here. That's a selfish line of thinking but it's true. Now if the young guys decide to stay home that's a whole different story.

Imagine how Edmonton fans would react if Paajarvi snubbed his nose at the NHL.

NHL teams had very little interest in him (who knows why), he is 34, and yes, his family comes in to play.

Its a shame that the other leagues are getting their ish together. It gives players another option if they are not happy in the NHL.

Just imagine if the AHL were not the NHL farm system, and offered to pay Crosby 15 mil per year for 5 year guaranteed. I think he would be playing for Wilkes-Barre right about now.

Most of these deals also incude a tax-free provision.

Hmmm - lets see.
$6M in California with State & Federal taxes........ maybe $3.8 or so, with all of the tax
credits expiring on 01/01/11.

I would think it is most attractive to play in Rudssia. Only a 40% difference on the upside.

Food for Thought.

This years playoffs showed you don't need a 6 million dollar goaltender to win the cup. That and every team being set in net played against Nabby.

I am sad to see him go, but happy that he is still playing. He was a very good goaltender (not great). He had amazing regular season numbers, playoff numbers were not nearly as good but he still was very solid in net for the San Jose Sharks. And another major point....He was a 9th Round Draft Pick, Calder Trophy Winner, Vezina Trophy Finalist, 1st Goaltender and Only Goaltender to score a Powerplay goal, 2x NHL All Star, and the best goaltender at the 08 IIHF World Championship. For the past 10 years IMO I believe that Nabokov was easily one of the top 10 goaltenders maybe even top 5. Farewell Nabby, and Good Luck!

I think he hasnt been the same since he got BOMBSHELLED by Team Canada....no team in the NHL would give him what he wanted so he pulled a Yashin

Another Russian bolts to the KHL. But I am acutally surprised that nobody grapped him. He's been one of the top goalies in the league over the past five years, and had a decent regular season last year (should've won the Vezina two years ago). The Sharks play-off failures can't all be hung on him. Oh well, I guess this is the end of his NHL career, because by the time his KHL contract is up, he'll be too old to make any kind of a comeback attempt to the NHL. Good luck to him anyway.

Does the KHL have cards of players?
As a Nabokov fan,sad to see him leave the nHL but glad he's still playing.
I guess this is the new way goalies careers fade out;playing elsewhere until you don't hear about them anymore.
Good luck to Nabokov.

The only downside I can really see is that it waters down the NHL talent level overall, of course it in turn strengthens the KHL, which depending on where you live can be a good or bad thing I suppose.

Some NHL fans aren't going to be happy seeing prime talent choose the KHL, just as I assume that some KHL fans probably are unhappy when that same talent chooses to go to the NHL.
