as a Kings fan, i couldn't be happier - he's not worth anywhere near $8.5M. NJ will do just fine finishing 4th or 5th in the conference and going out in the first round again.

i knew he'd take the money over a real chance to win Cups.

The kings won't win a cup ever. It's in the stars!

STORY

17 years $100 million is BRILLIANT. It'll be $5 million per year against the cap so the Devils can add more players and he'll be drawing a paycheque from the Devils LONG after he's retired. I'm surprised more teams haven't taken this approach to staying under the cap with star players.

Why any team would sign a player to that length is just plain dumb.
What if he has knee or back troubles 5 years from now?
I just can't see how this is good for the league and its other teams long-term.

I was kind of hoping it would have been in LA, as the patches would of at least been nicer to collect. ;)

I still am a big Kovy fan though, regardless of the parameters of it all.

Sweet! I'm happy, who cares about the cap?
Win it all now, figure it out later.
I guess I may have to start a new player collection.
Kovy #17 in Devils red, white, & black, SWEET!

That's an 8 year deal spread out over 17 (jersey number deal...he should be happy he's not sporting #71). This was done to fudge the cap.

So who is on the outs in NJ?

Kovy was not necessary for NJ to be good, but his presence does not hurt. If it hurts at all, it means some depth will be moved so that low paying youth can be brought in. That is never truly a bad thing, so good job resigning. It looks like the devils found a European (or technically Asian)counterpart to Gabby. Now we need the isles to sign someone to make it a trifecta rivalry, or better yet, philly.......

EDIT: I commented before seeing the numbers............ I dont see this deal getting league approval. Purposely dragging out the contract so that kovy doesnt get 12 million per year. That is a blatant attempt to bypass the cap altogether. Why dont my Rangers just pay Gabby 100 million over 100 years then? Cap hit of 1 million per year, heck they could afford the entire All-Star team at that rate............

17 years $102 million. $6 million cap hit.

Here's a link to a break down of the contract:

http://twitter.com/Russostrib/status/18946021478

as per the report:

The contract goes: years 1-2:6 and 6, the next 5 years at 11.5, in year 8 10.5, year nine 8.5, year ten 6.5, year eleven 3.5, then in year twelve 750K, and finally years 13-17 550K per year. Average of 6 mill per season.

That's a good question!

I think Bryce Salvador is one of the guys who will be moved - he is an expensive albeit talented "spare part" with the additions of Tallinder and Volchenkov. He has some market value, and given that teams league-wide know that Lou is in cap hell for the time being, he might garner a mid-round pick.

The easy out in all of this would be to somehow find a way to move Rolston and his $5M hit over the next two seasons. I'm not sure if any teams under the cap floor would bite on Rolston and a pick for basically nothing... anyone owe Lou a favor?

Other than that, Colin White could go but he has a NTC and played pretty well last year - I think Dainus Zubrus will get some attention, but it would hurt to lose his size. I firmly believe that Langenbrunner's days in NJ are numbered after he basically quit on the team after the Olympics, but it is rumored that he will attend the "unveiling" presser tomorrow, which suggests he's sticking around.

-----------------

With regards to the contract, I am biased because seeing Kovalchuk in Devils red is still equivalent to seeing a club med in the middle of the arctic, but I like it. It is a deal that pays him well over the course of the remainder of his playing career and assures him of a smaller income for a few years after he is done playing.

I'm sure there are teams and fans out there who would say it is a bit underhanded to spread the money out like that, but the Devils obviously love what Kovalchuk brings to the table enough to want to keep him around for the long haul. I think he turned a lot of heads with Devils brass by displaying a level of emotion and passion for the uniform mere moments after he put it on that has not been seen since the days of Stevens and Daneyko. His first game as a Devil (3 goal comeback in the final 3 minutes to win in regulation) is a testament to that.

Metrags - I'm sure you were thrilled when the NYR poached Gaborik from the Wild... It's not every day that a franchise player crosses the floor. Going to be fun watching two of the biggest names in the game duke it out for years to come.

I agree with you completely - this signing seemed to be looming once Pandolfo asked to be bought out... the culture of the team needed to change. No more sitting back, no more clinging to one goal leads, no more allowing 45 shots against from bad locations.

I never want to hear "the Devils are boring" again, and am confident that a player like Kovalchuk deciding to stick with Lou in NJ will mark the end of the unjustified comparisons to the 1995 Devils.

The Canucks did the same kind of contract with Luongo. It's a brilliant idea, that I'm sure the league will shut down fairly soon. The way I understood it was (when Luongo signed)...if he continues to play, it doesn't work for the team as the cap hit will still be $5+ million per season even though they are only paying him $1 million a year for the last few years.

If the player chooses to retire (because they will be to old to be competitive), the team wins, because that contract is now OFF the books and cap.

Sure, the player can be a arse and hang around forever, but he'll only make a minimum salary (if you can call $1 million minimum...lol), so why would he bother. By the time these contracts end, the league base will probably be up around that number.

As for the Kovy deal, he's so not worth that kind of cash. I think all teams involved in his hostage taking (salary negotiation) were grasping to sign some big name player to make it look like they did something. Teams would be way better off signing 2-3 players with that money.

Oh well...I'm glad he's out east and that the Canucks didn't waste that much on one more player. The Sundin deal should have taught them a lot.

As a favour the Leafs could take Zach Parise to help them out :)

Regardless how long it is spread out these team will still be paying and taking Cap hits for these players long after they are gone. Same with Hossa. He will be retired and still collecting pay cheques from the Hawks. Nothing like paying millions for future empty player slots.

Once a player is 35 or 36 can't remember which the contract is locked in against the cap though.

Only if he signs the contract after age 35. Kovalchuk's contract isn't guaranteed nor does it count against the cap if and when he retires. $6 million per season is a great number for Kovalchuk.

The contract is likely to get approved. They haven't nuked similar deals in the past, they can't really start now. Seventeen years seems long, but Kovalchuk is younger than most guys who have signed the really long, front loaded deals (Hossa, Zetterberg, Luongo). At the end of the deal, he'll be 43 - the same age as the oldest player in the league this year (Mark Recchi), and thus - not completely out of the realm of possiblity.

I think the biggest test for these contracts is going to come later. If these guys are still productive 10 years from now - are they going to have a problem cashing a paycheque for the league minimum?

I'm positive when Kovy is around 36-38 years old some KHL team will pay the Devils to get him to play in Russia. This was a great deal for the Devils. This means another looong trip for me to the Prudential

Thanks Lou again!

That number is inflated - Burnside reported $150 Million as Kovalchuk's potential career earnings.

The report I have heard the most is 17 years/102 million.
that is what penguinslive.com (Tribune review)...6mil seems like a steal though.

Very glad I didn't sell the /4 Kovy patch card for 30.00...I may not get 125.00 but would bet I can get more than 30.00(or I'll keep it)

*Edit* I found the scan... very sweet card. I'm going to have to decide how much of his Devils stuff to pick up.

This just in: Elias, Langenbrunner, Parise and Brodeur to attend the Devils presser today at 1... Kovalchuk too, of course.

I. LIKE. IT.

I think the contract terms are that Kovy is to get 95 of the 102 million in the first 10 years. Can he decide to "retire" after only playing 10 seasons of the contract? If so, then its basically a "10 year - 95 million contract", but with a 6 cap hit. At 38, he will probably go to the KHL for another big contract. Nice move by Lou and Kovy. Kings didnt pony up the cash.

That's pretty much it, either 95 over 10 years, or 98.5 over 11 years, if he choose to stay 1 more year for any records/milestones.
