Canucks Make Big Trade with Panthers...

Does anyone else find it odd that Florida is actually having a decent start to the season despite all the weird moves and signings they've had?

If the Canucks hang onto Reinprecht, he'd be a good veteran presence in the locker room. Also a guy who's won it all with Colorado, and that's never a bad thing to have around.

Okay. Something I have no idea about. I keep coming back to the third-round pick. Was the pick originally a Canuck pick? I've tried to find the answer, thought I had, but now am not so sure. Maybe someone more adept at internet searching can find that out?

Here's the reason: From what I can find, if the third rounder was originally a Canuck pick, it would mean the Canucks now have all of their own picks in the first three rounds for the next draft. This in turn means they can make offer sheets to RFAs. Unless I am mistaken, there is a certain defenceman in Nashville that is an RFA this upcoming summer, and he just happens to be from British Columbia.

But hey, like I said, my internet search skills are pretty crappy, so I may be totally off with this. I just can't see any other reason the third-round pick was included.

i believe the pick is their original pick - i read that somewhere. McKenzie, I think.

if this is true, I am a very, very, happy Canuck fan. And, I would like to than Dale Tallon for making up for his totally crappy attitude and play as a Canuck many years ago.

He's going to buried in Chicago(AHL) and play down there. Perhaps he'll get called up in the playoffs, but I don't think he is going to get recalled during the season.

I might get jumped on for saying this, but isn't (unfortunately) Booth about one hit away from Marc Savard's condition? With the sensitivity to these kinds of injuries, and forced time off with any potential head injuries, doesn't that raise the risk on a layer like Booth? It sounds like Vancouver wants to take the chance, whereas Florida doesn't.

On paper it sure looks like Vancouver is the winner, but I would suggest we wait until (at least) the end of the season. All the best to Booth though, this could really make him more appreciated in the hockey fan base!

now you have an idea of how much canucks fans were disappointed in Sturm and Samuelsson.

I was jumping for joy with this trade. Not for Booth, but that we got rid of those other two. Booth was a really nice bonus. I would have given away Samuelsson for the 3rd R pick. Sturm, I would have given a pick for someone to take him and his salary. Or have him buried in the minors like Reinprecht is now.

For me, Booth is a total bonus.

If Booth gets injured, like Savard, it doesn't hurt the Canucks from a salary cap POV, b/c he'll be put in LTIR.

Glenn. IIRC, Booth's NTC kicks in at the end of this season. Reinprecht was getting paid 2.something million to play in San Antonio. I think these were stronger factors in Florida getting rid of them. This was a Florida salary dump, plain and simple. Sammy and Sturm are UFAs after this season, so if Florida can't sign them, it's still to their overall advantage.

Booth is a gamble, we are aware of that. He is still an upgrade from Sammy and Sturm if he pans out. If he does end up on LTIR for a lot of time, the Canucks have the luxury (now and next season) of having some pretty nice young talent to fill the void.

Rhino is insurance - Canuck ownership doesn't really care about paying him that to play in Chicago. Hell, the Canucks are one of the 7 teams that are basically bankrolling the league to begin with; paying Rhino that money to play in Chicago is no big deal.

I am still thinking the third round pick might turn out to be the key to this whole thing in the long run.

In the new era of the NHL there is usually a lot more to trades then just player for player. Cap space present and future usually is almost as important as the player involved. Obviously both teams have reasons for the moves.

Booth is the best 30 goal scorer in the NHL that nobody has heard of. Vancouver makes out like a bandit in this deal. With the right line-mates, he could hit 40 goals, 80 pts easily.

Rob, you're thinking of 3 years ago- pre concussion David Booth. Not the current guy we're seeing.

In his last 116 games, he has 31 goals, 25 assists, 56 pts, -42.

He is a shell of his former self... And at $4.25M for 4 years, if he continues at that rate then that is one terrible contract on the books.

Believe me, I like Booth... but he is nowhere near the player he showed 3 years ago. The Canucks are taking a big risk here. One I hope actually pans out because, like I said, I like Booth. He and Kesler already have some exisiting chemistry so this might work out well but he is a big ticket right now who isn't performing anywhere near his contract level. I don't blame Florida for ridding themselves of him (he may just need a fresh start). He certainly won't be getting those 40 goals, 80 pts like you suggest. He won't be anywhere near that.

Also, Nik Kulemin is the best 30 goal guy no one has heard of ;)

Not if you work in my office. I am surrounded in my 'quad pod' by three Leaf fans, and the only words they can basically speak nowadays are 'Kessel' and 'Kulemin,' combined with the words 'greatest,' 'YAH LEAFS!,' First place!' and 'top 3 in East for sure!'

I just nod, smile, and make sure I keep track of things for later in the season... :D

PS Kulemin is one of those guys that quietly scores a lot of goals.
