Verified Trader,
Hello everyone,
Although I haven't been very active in terms of posting, I still do try and check in daily to read/view everything that people have for sale or what's on their mind in general. The reason for my lack of activity can be contributed in large part to school (Engineering is very demanding haha) and really limiting my spending on cards since other things have had priority unfortunately. That being said my enthusiasm for the hobby has never wavered, I've just learned the virtue of patience and letting things go if I cannot afford it at the time. What I've done instead is developed a database of all the cards I'd like to buy in the future and who currently owns it, so if you've received a message from me asking about a card you once had in 2008, I apologize, but it has really helped me track some difficult cards.
The Cards:
As some of you may remember, I have been collecting 2005-06 High Glossy cards /10 in the hopes of putting together the entire print run of 487. They seem to be very few and far between so I began collecting a few other nice cards from 2005-06 Upper Deck which then morphed into picking up anything from 2005-06 that I found rare and interesting at the right price. I do still pick up cards from other years from time to time but my main focus now is on my sets and 2005-06 cards that really draw my attention. Without further a do, Here are some of the highlights of my pick ups over the past 10 months:
Wolski Cards:
I came across an ebay seller who was a big Wolski collector at one point in time, but had decided to move a few Wolski pieces to fund other wants he now has. I was pretty fortunate to pick up the Wolski HG card I needed for my set, and what's awesome about this particular card is that it is serial numbered to his jersey! 8/10! Also was able to pick up a beautiful 4 colour SPX rookie and a very rare notable numbers rookie auto. Since these cards were numbered to the players jersey number, only 8 Wolski vcards were produced, this one numbered 2/8. If you have a player collection, I'd be interested in buying the 2005-06 section of it, and if the player happens to be a rookie during 2005-06, I may even pick up the whole thing. So please reach out to me if you are willing to part with an old PC of a player that overlaps 2005-06 and hopefully we can work out a deal
Error Cards:
I don't own many cup cards (usually out of my price range) but I was able to nab this Tyler Weiman with a gorgeous 4 colour patch piece, what makes it an error card is that it has no serial number. Very unique piece and happy to own it.
Also very happy to own this Boston Bruins legend Nicklas Lidstrom!.. oh wait haha. It appears this trilogy jersey card has had the wrong piece inserted into it. Being a huge fan of acquiring multi-coloured swatch cards, having a 3-colour error card is about as unique as it gets.
The Cup Cards
I was fortunate to pick up this pair of Stralman cup rookies, both /249 and /36 copies. Being a Leafs fan it really stings to be reminded of how many players, like Stralman, have been traded away in the past and gone on to have great NHL careers. However I do also realize Stralman would not have developed into the player he is today had he stuck around in the Leafs organization under that regime. The future is looking REALLY good for the first time in my hockey following career so it does lessen the sting a bit. Back to the cards, I can't believe how nice the 2007-08 Gold Cup rookies are in hand, the scans don't do them justice but UD really did a good job on these designs.
While I'm not the biggest fan of Printing plates, I won't hesitate to pick up ones from 2005-06 when the price is right. Here are a few that I've managed to pick up recently (The last Montoya is from series 2):
And finally, my favourite leaf goalie since Ed Belfour, I was happy to pick up a James Reimer Cup RC. I felt very bad for him and felt he shouldered more of the blame than he deserved during his time in Toronto. My take on it is that he was a very good goalie who was broken down and lost confidence when the losses added up and he was blamed for it all. I also think Bernier was a decent goalie at one point, but playing in front of the Leafs defence between 2014-2016, I believe it broke his spirit. Anyway glad to have this one in my collection
Inserts
I've picked up a few more 2005-06 inserts/parallels recently because I just love the look of them. One of the nicer looking parallels produced were the rainbow Ice cards /100, again, scans don't do them justice compared to having them in hand. Here are the ones I now have:
Another parallel set I may start up is the Beehive Matte set. I already put together the regular Beehive set, the Red Parallel set and the Beige Parallel set. So far I've managed to pick up a really nice Ovechkin /25 and Penner /25. Also have a Stempniak on the way too.
Ovechkin Rookies:
Aside from Joe Sakic, Ovechkin has been my favourite player since I began watching hockey back in 2005. In my opinion he is the Greatest goal scorer of the post lock-out era and easily top 5 in history. Weather or not he is the greatest of all time is debatable, or where he places in terms of ranking, but absolutely undeniable how far ahead he is of his goal scoring peers. The fact that he has scored 50 goals on a yearly basis when 20-goal scorers are getting $5 million/year contracts is really unbelievable. I know he has gotten a lot of heat for his playoff disappointments in the past but I do feel he has really elevated his play in the playoffs recently. I'd love to see him win a cup one day, maybe this will be their year. Here are some of his rookie and pre-rookie cards I've managed to add to the PC:
BGS 10s:
Parallels: (My favourite one is the Beehive GOLD card, only 1 of 2 I've seen and I believe the used to be case hits back in the day)
Autos/jerseys:
Crosby Rookies:
Having said I liked Ovechkin, I used to hate Crosby haha, now I've grown to like him and even cheer for him to succeed. Only reason I wasn't the biggest fan was because he used to really try to draw calls and give it to the refs, but now I find I'm just amazed at how he plays and how well he sees the ice. He also has a unique skating style that really makes him stand out on the ice, kind of like MacDavid today. Best player in the NHL today and should be until MacDavid takes the reigns.
Favourite pick up is the Fleer Ultra Fresh Ink /25, very rare and only one I have seen to date. Most interesting ones were the Rookie Showcase rookies, one is the bronze version and the other is the Pewter version. I didn't even know there were two different versions until I noticed the slight variation in colour.
Goalie Jerseys
Before I get to showing off the progress I've made in my sets, I'd like to do something a little different and show off some of the goalie cut jerseys I've been able to pick up. I typically only pick up Team Canada jerseys to use on the ice, or Leaf jerseys but I do make exceptions. I apologize for the crappy pictures, if anyone has any tips as to how to get better pictures of jerseys, please let me know.
The first is a black Team Canada jersey replica from the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. I've since customized it with a nameplate and my number. I also added an IIHF patch on the helm and am going to get a fight strap stitched onto it. Also pictured is Roberto Luongo wearing the real thing during the 2004 World Cup so you can get a better idea of what the jersey looks like. Also there's a few pictures of me wearing the jersey in a pick up game last year. Unfortunately with my course load this year, don't have time to play this year and I miss it quite a bit. Hopefully I'll have time next year
Next is a rare replica from the 2002 Alternate jersey worn during the opening game between Canada and Sweden (Having lost 5-2, it's no wonder that game is long forgotten by Canadians haha). I also customized this one and added some patches and will add the fight strap at a later date. Pictured is Curtis Joseph wearing the real thing during his only appearance during the 2002 Olympics.
One of my favourite jerseys I own, this is a replica Winnipeg Falcons jersey that team Canada used during the 2004 World Cup of Hockey against the Americans at the Bell Centre in a spirited 3-2 win. If you don't remember what happened during that game here is a clip of the fight where even Mario Lemieux was looking to square up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tby54QtgjvY
Another thing that makes this jersey special to me is the ties the jersey has to the Canadian Armed Forces during WW1. Since Remembrance Day is this Friday, I find it appropriate to share their story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO2omjEBxEw
Here is the only All-Star Goalie Cut jersey I own, and in my opinion, the sharpest All-Star jerseys made in the modern era. I absolutely loved the designs of both the Western and Eastern All Stars. What makes this one pretty special is that it is Authentic and the attention to detail is amazing. For those of you who have not held a game-used or authentic jersey in hand, the detail, stitching and quality really give life and depth to a jersey. Also pictured is my favourite player, Joe Sakic, taking home the MVP honours after scoring a hat-trick in the game. If anyone knows where I could get a hold of an Eastern version of this jersey, please let me know
Lastly, here is a very interesting authentic jersey because it apparently came from a Team Canada locker room. This is from the 2008 Team Canada World Juniors (where they won the Gold in OT)and was a spare jersey (not game used). It's very unique because of the parachute like feel to the jersey. Attached is a picture of Steve Mason wearing his version of this jersey during the World Junior Championships. If anyone has anymore info on these types of jerseys or has any goalie cut jerseys for sale please let me know
SETS PROGRESS
Now onto the sets, let's start off with the 2005-06 Upper Deck BGS 10s. I now have a total of 16 BGS 10 rookies but I'm still missing the Crosby (too pricey for me at the moment). Notable cards with very low population reports are:
-Jeff Carter 1/2
-R.J. Umberger 1/1
-Mikko Koivu 1/2
-Robert Nilsson 1/1
-Johan Franzen 1/2
-Erik Christensen 1/1
-Ryan Suter 1/2
-Ryan Whitney 1/1
-Tomas Fleischmann 1/1
1957 Topps
I haven't really focused too much on this set lately since they can be pretty pricey in the condition I want (PSA 8), so I only have a few new additions. The best one of the lot has to be the Allan Stanley, which has a very low population in SCG 88/ PSA 8 condition.
2005 UD PROMO
The 2005 UD Promo cards were, to my knowledge, distributed in Beckett magazines back in 2005. They mirror the 2005-06 UD series 1 base set of 200 and look the exact same with the exception of a big red PROMO stamp across the front. Since they aren't very exciting I'll only post one example of what they look like. I currently have 55/200.
2005-06 Victory Black /5
This set is proving to be pretty difficult as they are few and far between. With only 5 copies, most are either in PCs or hidden away or forgotten. I now have a total of 5.
2005 Canadian Fall Expo /10
This set mirrors the 2005-06 UD series 1 including all of the young guns. I was very pleased to make some significant progress on this set and was able to pick up a large lot of YGs recently. Notables were YGs /10 of Richards, Phaneuf, Seabrook and Keith. Also has anyone seen the Crosby? If anyone has a picture of it I'd love to see it.
2005-06 Multi-coloured jersey series 1 and 2
These are actually getting pretty tough to find as I seem to have most of them. I've upgraded a few 2 clr to 3clr but new ones are getting pretty scarce. Here are the newest additions:
2005-06 UD Game Patches /15 series 1 and 2
Here is one of my favourite sets of cards ever produced and where I've made significant progress over the past year or so.
Series 1: Plenty of HOF players in this bunch. Some notable additions include a 3 colour Patch cards of Lemieux, Messier, Geoffrion, Trottier and Sundin. One of the rarest additions is the 3 colour patch of Marian Gaborik. I had a conversation with GabbyGuy when he sold me the one-colour patch Gaborik he had about a year ago, and he told me that he had only seen one 3 colour Gaborik ever! For a big Gaborik collector to say that means it truly is rare. So when it popped up a few months ago for sale, I went all in on it. Another really great addition is the 2 colour Bobby Clarke patch. I actually made an attempt to buy this exact same card back in 2013 when I found it on kijiji. Only problem was that it was in Saskatchewan and the seller did not want to ship. But just as he was getting around to the idea of shipping it to me, another local buyer nabbed it up and it disappeared until a few months ago. Some of the most stunning patches seem to come from Nashville and Columbus from the mid 2000's, as can be seen in the Zherdev and Legwand patches. Both are 4 colour patches with great stitching and colours, especially in hand. Also, in case anyone knows who won this card, the Patrick Roy just recently sold a few days ago when someone submitted an offer which I believe was $10 higher than mine. If anyone knows who won this card, please let me know, thanks! Here is a link to the card: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/222306735973?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Series 2:
Notables in series 2 include the SSP patch of Lemieux, stunning 3 colour patches of Gaborik, Lecavalier, Foprsberg and Kovalchuk. But the nicest Patch from this lot is by far and away the Paul Kariya. This 4 colour patch is really eye popping especially in hand. I'm not 100% sure which part of the jersey it comes from so if anyone knows I'd love to hear it. And even though the Kariya wins hands down, getting a patch from the "winged wheel" on a Detroit Red Wings card never gets old, as can be seen on the Legace.
2005-06 UD High Glossy /10
Still one of my favourite projects so far, I can't believe how much progress I've had in a little under a year of perusing the entire print run. I've had to search far and wide for many of these with some coming from Finland, Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, all over Canada and the USA (even Hawaii!).
Series 1:
Massive progress on the set recently, some favorites include YG RCs of Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Maxim Talbout and Cam Ward. Favourites from the base set include Iginla x2 and Marian Gaborik. Whats interesting about the Iginlas is that one is actually a checklist (only one I own). Also they seem to have forgotten to stamp it on the back so it's # xx/10. Pretty unique to have an error HG card in my set.
Series 2:
For whatever reason, High Gloss cards from series 2 seem to be much more common to find than series 1. I'm sure the price difference per box has something to do with it now, but I would have thought that series 1 was much more heavily broken due to have the Crosby rookie. Anyway, favourites in this crop include quite a few HOF players and superstars including Modano, Pronger, Brodeur, Kariya and Belfour. Nicest looking for sure are the Brodeur and Belfour, absolutely love the look of them and they are as sharp as can be. Being goalie cards probably play a huge role as to why they are my favorite, but they are great looking regardless. Not much in terms of big name rookies but I believe Montoya is the only one still in the league from this crop. Sharp card, you could even say it's a perfect 10
(refernce to the Columbus game, sorry habs fans
)
And I'll just show these off again just because they are my favourite haha
2005-06 Hot Prospects
This is one of the most underrated sets in my opinion, beautiful cards but I do understand that hitting anything really nice out of the product was tough. I've been considering buying a box of this but it just seems to be too much of a gamble for now, considering how cheap many of the hits go for today. I'm not officially doing the set as of right now, but I do like top pick up the patch auto rookie cards if the patches are pretty nice (usually 3-colour at least). Nicest one overall hands down is the Seabrook patch (4 colours) and really pops out of the card. Second is probably the Steen, alot of breaks and techically 3 colour since the Leafs had the christmas silver tinsel outlining along with the regular blue and white. I've also picked up a 2 of the Hot White Patches /5. For being limited to 5, I think they kind of dropped the ball on the design in my opinion, seems far too plain to me. Oh well I'll continue to pick them up out of rarity. If anyone has an opinion of this product I'd love to hear it, since it is kind of a forgotten product I'd love to hear more opinions on it
Patrick Eaves Collection
On of the most exciting pick ups I made this past year was from a fellow member of the forums who decided he was ready to move an old Patrick Eaves PC of his. A very complete PC I might add! To most people Patrick Eaves may not be necessarily exciting, but for a huge fan of the cards manufactured in 2005-06 like myself, its huge! For the sake of how long this post is getting, I'll only show the best cards haha (everything aside from the Cup RC is numbered to less than 25):
Just before I get to the top 3, if anyone can tell me where on the Senators jersey the Ultra Fleer card patches came from, I'd love to know
Alright top 3 Eaves cards:
3rd is the Ultimate Patch Auto RC /10. I had never previously owned on of these cards and I must say they are very eye-popping in person. Beautiful design and a lot of thought seems to have gone into creating the template for this series. A great patch to go along with a great card also helps
2nd is the Ice Premieres Patch /10. I again had never previously owned a copy of of one of these cards and I must say UD did really well with this design. Great four colour patch on it also helps bring the card to life. But I believe the picture speaks for itself.
And 1st place goes to the most important card in every player rookie PC, THE CUP BLACK RC 1/1. I was so thrilled to actually own of these rairities from 2005-06 especially and never really thought I'd ever get the chance at owning one. Beautiful card and I'll always be looking around for more when I get the chance.
Now normally that would be the end of my show and tell because how can you top a Cup Black 1/1 RC card? Well Here is the real reason I've become such a fan of the 2005-06 Hot Prospects product.....
Not 1.. Not 2... Not 3... Not even 4... but 5 Hot Prospects Shield Rookie Auto 1/1s!!!! Now to some of you, you may see scrubs, bums and has beens, but to me I truly see gorgeous auto rookie shields on some of the best designed shield cards ever made. I'll talk a little bit about each one to wrap up this long show-and-tell thread. While the Cam Ward probably holds the most value, being the only one still in the NHL, the best looking one for me is the Hannu Toivonen. Something about the Black, Yellow and White on the golden background really makes the card stand out. Being from the east coast, it was nice to get the Jurcina one particularly since he was a long time Halifax Moosehead in the ealry 2000s. The Leneveu was actually the first one I pick up and from the moment I had it in hand, I began searching everywhere for more of them, with pretty decent success as you can see. The Helbling was very intriguing since I do not know much about him, but I can see he was traded to Tampa midway through his rookie season, seeing I have his HG RC in a Nashville Uniform. Ended up buying him and Toivonen from the same guy in Russia just a little while ago. And last but not least the Cam Ward. Being a goaltender and having started watching hockey back in 2005, I was one of the few Canadians that year that was actually cheering for the Hurricanes to win the cup over the Oilers, and he was the reason why. Unfortunately it seems that his success came very early for him and I can't see him being employed in the league once his contract is up but for me this card means much more than it would to the average collector. Well I hope you enjoyed the show if you stuck around til the end, and as always feedback, comments and answers to my many questions are very much welcomed! Down below is a link to my photobucket in case anyone wants to see the progress on my sets, and also other cards that I picked up that I did not include in the thread due to length.
oh and here is my wantlist in case anyone wants to take it with them to the Expo this weekend, thanks and have a great weekend!

Just before I get to the top 3, if anyone can tell me where on the Senators jersey the Ultra Fleer card patches came from, I'd love to know
3rd is the Ultimate Patch Auto RC /10.
