HHOF Inductees 2017

Recchi way ahead of Kariya. Kariya isn't even on my radar.

CuJo I don't think.

How about JR? I'd love to watch that speech.

I've seen people go in before that were "buddies", Kariya + Selanne, and that alone is my reasoning.

CuJo has some solid numbers.

I don't discount Recchi's accolades but sometimes the HHOF makes ZERO sense on it's selections. (See Rogie Vachon waiting an eternity)

JR is a ways off still unless his media ties have helped him. He will make it one day.

Be an absolute shame if Clare Drake does not get in the Builders section - so many great coaches that were influenced and mentored by him, let alone the impact of how many systems originated with him. But it's seemingly overrun by NHL folks - because Drake coached Internationally and in Canadian University Hockey - it doesn't seem to matter who benefitted - but among some of the great coaches who got help from him include among others Babcock, Hitchcock, Tom Watt, Bill Peters, Willie Desjardins, Dave King. His teachings pretty much are the foundation of coaching in Canada - especially for Hockey Canada

Had he plied his trade in the NHL, he'd have achieved as much, if not more than Scotty Bowman.

Kariya is a surprise. Coincidentally he actually showed up to a Ducks' event during the playoffs. Maybe the bridge they built back to each other factored in?

Thrilled to see all of these names, though I had to Google Clare Drake as I'm an American who didn't know better.

Nice that Selanne and Kariya get in together even if I don't think Kariya is as worthy as some who didn't get in. Recchi and Andreychuk are great additions too.

I can't wait to see Paul Kariya get inducted with Teemu and hear what he has to say after being away from hockey for so long. I think he will get a VERY warm reception.

Also hoping the HOF induction gets him in the mood to maybe sign cards again. Pavel Bure was pretty shy too before his induction and all of a sudden he was back on he card scene. Here's hoping!

As a Kariya fan back in the day I'm really pleased to see him get into the hall. Definitely think he was worthy (though I'm obviously biased - haha). He was unreal at his peak. Point per game player, with 5 year-end all star selections, 2 Lady Byngs (don't laugh, almost everyone with multiple Byngs is in the HOF) who was one win away from joining the Triple Gold Club. Like others, I'm happy to see him join his pal Selanne and looking forward to seeing what he has to say in his speech after not being involved with hockey for quite a while. : )

It's funny no one was talking about Kariya at all before the announcement but now everyone is, high five Derrick for going with PK! I felt pretty confident they would induct the dynamic duo together. That said I had Andreychuk as he was due. Recchi I axed for CuJo but that's biased and due to our personal ties to Curtis and his wife. Next time buddy!

Great class, glad to see Kariya get in like Bure and Lindros and other guys with similar careers, big stats and big time players but no Cups. And, as many have said, it's not the NHL hall of fame, its for hockey and Kariya was always in the NCAA. Congrats to the class of 2017!

Just curious, who would you have taken ahead of Kariya? I get the knocks against Kariya (No 500 goals, no 1000 pts, no Cup (although he came about as close as you can) ). But his international resume is pretty solid. And it's clear injuries aren't a disqualifier otherwise guys like Cam Neely and Eric Lindros would be paying for admission.

I'm happy with this years class. Even though I thought Kariya was a boarderline case that would have to wait a little longer to be inducted, I'm OK that he is in.

My best,

Ken

When a guy's disappearing act is as on point as Kariya's it's no wonder folks don't talk about him much, and being such a private person I guess that's the way he wanted it.

Kariya 1 - Public 0 :D

He's back in the public eye now though and after reading an interview following his induction announcement he seemed to be quite happy about the news and had some good things to say about his career and hockey in general.

I very rarely go out of my way to watch induction ceremonies or listen to the speeches but I will definitely be tuning in to hear Kariya's speech. Kariya, Lindros, and Bure were the "big three" I grew up watching and cheering for in the 90's and its cool to see them all in the hall.

I meant no one was talking about him being in the conversation for HHOF induction yesterday.

Congrats again to him, he was a great player in his day. A shame injuries forced him, Forsberg and a few others to retire early.

Who is up next year?

For first year eligibility you have The Martins, Brodeur & St. Louis, then it drops off considerably to Olli Jokinen, Sergei Gonchar, Chris Phillips, Daniel Briere, Brendan Morrow, etc.

I'm guessing you will see a goaltender-themed class next year to align with Brodeur going in and probably Osgood and/or CuJo will get the nod as well.
