John Carlson just got paid. Yes, the Washington Capitals have managed to convince the veteran blue liner to remain with the Stanley Cup champions as both parties have agreed on a contract extension.

According to the information provided by NHL insider Bob McKenzie, Carlson's new deal is an eight-year contract, worth $64 million.

:cheer::woot::clap::yess::dance::whew:

Still have ~$13M left to sign the rest, which shouldn't be terribly difficult.

Carlson re-signs with Washington :caps: :cheer:

The Washington Capitals have re-signed John Carlson to a $64 million, eight-year contract that allows the Stanley Cup champions to keep the do-it-all defenceman.

Carlson will count $8 million against the salary cap through the 2026-27 season. General manager Brian MacLellan announced the deal Sunday.
“John has been an exceptional and consistent player for our franchise and has blossomed into being one of the top defencemen in the NHL,” MacLellan said. “Defenceman like John are a rare commodity in our League and, at 28 years of age, we feel he is just entering his prime. As a right-handed defenceman, John plays in all key situations and has contributed greatly to our team’s success on the special teams. We are pleased for both parties to have come to an agreement.”

Saw this the other day and just went ugh because if Carlson is getting that much, Drew Doughty will probably empty the Brinks truck with LA. I'd guess $11-12 mil per. Good for WSH keeping a core guy around!

$8M per is a lot for a second pairing guy. But they're able to do it because they were able to move the Orpik anchor off the books, and got the true stud, Orlov signed long-term to a below market deal. Good use of resources by MacLellan.

I dunno....that's still a HUGE cap hit for a guy that is really good but not elite imo?
