I was recently featured in Beckett Hockey magazine as the Super Collector of the Month for my Markus Naslund collection. One of the questions that I was asked was if I had a white whale. And I responded with the oldest piece missing from my collection. The 1995-96 Penguins Foodland team issue card. In all my years of collecting I had, literally, never even seen a copy of the card in nearly 16 years of collecting Naslund.

I was hoping that maybe, someone would see that and point me in the direction of a copy of this card. What I, honestly, did not expect happened on Saturday January 4. I woke up to an e-mail from a fellow collector that after reading the article he went down to his basement and found a copy of the card. He asked if I still needed it. I responded that I did. And I asked how much he was looking for, for the card. He said not to worry about any payment, but that he was “Glad I had it for you. Enjoy it and the hunt is over.”

I got home from work last night, and there was a piece of mail waiting for me. I saw the return address and immediately knew what it was. I opened it up and laid eyes on the card that I had never seen in 16 years of collecting Markus Naslund.

Here it is the 1995-96 Penguins Foodland Markus Naslund:

The card collecting community is fantastic. It is people like D. Ellis from Portsmouth New Hampshire that make this hobby so great. Looking out for one another. This wouldn’t have happened without a fellow collector, Jason, who DM’d me, on Twitter, back in November to see if I was cool with him passing along my info to Al Muir an editor at Beckett. And to Al Muir, and Beckett, thank you. Because of this article I was able to cross off a card that had been on my want list as long as I had a want list.

The hunt for my white whale is over, but the hunt for more Markus Naslund's continues.

Cheers.

That is an incredible story and just shows the reach of the hobby and how much good there still is out there.

Fantastic card but the story is what makes this post.

Congrats.

That's awesome! Congrats on landing your whale! You should point him to the site so that hopefully we can help him with his collection as well!

Congrats.

Couldn't have said it better myself to be honest.

Incredible story, congrats on finally finding your white whale. What a great card that is!

Congrats as well on the Beckett feature. I read it the other day and it was a great read! I remember you mentioning that Foodland card in there as well. I had my Enroth collection featured in the November issue and it was such a cool thing to see.

Literally JUST read this on Twitter about 30 seconds ago, no joke! So ironic on the timing to see it here right after. Amazing story and CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Like Joe, I know how hard it is to track down local food cards. I've been trying for years to find a Scott Stevens that was given to kids at local Pizza Huts in 1984. Like you, I'm betting there are a few people out there that own one that simply don't think twice about what they have.

But I also know what it's like to finally land something like that, and it's really great, so congratulations and now you get to move onto the next card on your list. :D

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I've still got this card on my desk. I keep looking down and smiling. It's a story that I won't forget. I just hope that I get to pay it forward in the near future.

Congrats, Dave. I know food issues can be tough to find, but do you know of any particular reason why THAT particular card was so tough?

Joe

*Edit* Just had a look and you could've knocked that one off your list at any time here:

That website, oof, hahaha. I don't know why that set seems to be so tough to find, but I very rarely see any cards from that particular year. Maybe someone dumped a bunch into one of Pittsburgh's three rivers . . .

I am definitely doing that. This great site could always use more great people.

Couldn't have said it better myself to be honest.

It was kind of surreal seeing my collection in Beckett. Never thought to submit or anything. I never thought about my Naslund collection that way. I just consider it the one 16 year grind that will continue for a long time.

#Synergy . . . hahaha.

Great story Dave, and kudos to D. Ellis for helping you out. We have a great community here!

We sure do Al. The best.

Isn't it bitter sweet sometimes when the hunt is over or is it just me? Great find!

I didn't let myself think about this until the card actually arrived. I have been scrolling through the want list to see what should be atop the list now.

One day, you'll find it. And it will be awesome!
