Arbitration Season: 20 Jul - 4 Aug

Nobody likes it, but it's something that remains unavoidable for some NHL teams and restricted free agents unable to resolve their contract stalemate.

It's salary arbitration time again in the NHL and already one third of the 29 players that were originally slated for hearings have settled their cases. Expect more of that as the hearings approach.

2007 Player Arbitration List

Notable arbitration cases still slated to be held include Ottawa Senators goalie Ray Emery next Tuesday, Montreal Canadiens winger Michael Ryder and New York Rangers forward Sean Avery on July 30.

I think Cammalleri case is very interesting. I could see him falling all over the map. In 81 games last year he scored 34 goals, had 46 assists for 80 pts and was a +5 on a bad team. He's still only 25. He had a fairly good year last year also. I could see him getting Horton type money around $4M but I could also see him getting like $2.5M.

I think he'd deserve Horton money. Jason Blake also parlayed a 40 goal and 68 point season into a $4M/year contract. Putting up 30 goals, 80 points, and a plus rating on that team is pretty darn good. I'll say he will get around $4M for a one year deal.

One thing that surprised me was Joni Pitkanen settling for a 1 year, $2.4M contract instead of going through the arbitration process. He earned $2.0M last year with Philly and some of the defenseman contracts being handed out this offseason are eye popping.

and the hearings begin:

Brooks Laich

The arbitrator's decision is expected within 48 hours.

I can't see him gettin any more than a 10% increase from his $606,100 earning from last year...

Emery will be interesting. I still feel that if he wins a salary of $4M+, they should seek to trade him. I see major headaches with this guy once he signs a big contract. Although I love his personality, I think he'll become a headcase soon enough...

Miettinen, Stars, go ahead with hearing

The Dallas Stars and forward Antti Miettinen went ahead with their salary arbitration case Thursday.

Miettinen, 27, made the league-minimum US$450,000 last season while producing 25 points (11-14) and a minus-5 rating in 74 games.

I'm thinking that he'll be able to reel in about $625,000...

I'll go with 675, 000

Ottawa Senators signed centre Chris Kelly

The Ottawa Senators announced Tuesday the club has re-signed centre Chris Kelly to a one-year deal, avoiding arbitration with him.

Kelly recorded his best season in 2006-07, scoring 15 goals and adding 23 assists for 38 points in 82 games. He also had seven points while playing in all 20 post-season games.

:D I like Kelly... fiesty little player... glad to see him back for another season. I expect even better things from him this year. Thanks for the info Brian!

i wonder what avery gets. surprised the rangers didn't get him locked up.

Billy

Avery had his hearing Monday afternoon and a ruling is expected Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Looking more like Wednesday though.

Hope that helps?

Brian

I'm still looking forward to Cammalleri results case myself (obviously.) My guess is that by everything I've read, the Kings are offering 3-4M, Cammi wants a lot higher, and arbitration will settle somewhere in the middle. I guess we'll know by this weekend :)

i've heard that he is at his wits end with LA and wouldn't be surprised to see him leave for ufa next season. hoping i'm still alive next year I'd love to have his 30+ goals in Long Island.

Rangers centre Sean Avery a $1.9-million salary for next season

Avery, 27, was seeking $2.6-million in arbitration after scoring 48 points in 84 games last season with the Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers.

Avery earned $1.1-million last season and the Rangers were offering him $1.3-million in arbitration. A well-known agitator, Avery has 134 points and 913 penalty minutes in 322 career games.

Perhaps Lombardi's biggest blunder (yes bigger than signing Cloutier) giving him away for 3 guys named Jose (including Jason Ward) who turned into a 5th round pick #137 overall Josh Turnbull . Avery's numbers last year 18+30=48 pts were close to Dustin Penner 29+16=45pts who is going to get $4.25 mil next year and yet he's at $1.9 mil. Seems like the Rangers got a steal.
