This is getting ridiculous!!! eBay no longer allowing check/MO for payment...

This is getting ridiculous. eBay.com has announced that effective October 2008, MO's and Cheque's will no longer be accepted as forms of payment for auctions. The only acceptable form of payment will be PayPal, CC, Propay (some new payment form, not valid for Canadians) or pay on p/u.

Yet ANOTHER cash grab by eBay. This will force everybody to switch to a Paypal business account which allows them to get a cut of the funds. How can the US government allow this? It also means that some eBayers technically won't be able to bid since they don't have Paypal accounts.

Utterly ridiculous.

Somewhere hidden in there (or elsewhere) was a thing about having requirements for sellers to have a "4.3 or higher" score on the detailed seller ratings, or else they would not be able to list auctions.

Well, for a new seller, how could they possibly earn points toward that if they aren't allowed to sell in the first place?

I'm lost.
 
Not that I am totally against the PayPal rule, because I kind of think it is the way to go...I've had more problems with cheques and money orders than I care to remember...but this is why I basically quit selling on eBay. Just when a guy gets comfortable selling, there is a massive paradigm shift with the people in charge, and everyone else is left scrambling. It seems to happn a couple of times a year.

I guess people will get used to it or get out. I have to think at this point, MOs only constitute 1% of payments on eBay anyway.

I have stated i only take paypal in my auctions, and you would be surprised how many requests i get for MO... i wouldnt be surprised if that figure was closer to 5-10% (not just talking about sportscards either)

There's no way they can force it per se, but if you're not allowed to list it as a payment option in the auction listing, then it may scare away some potential bidders who don't have paypal....heck, there are a few fellow boardies here who don't use it as it is....what are they supposed to do, e-mail every potential seller and ask if they accept MO?
 
Kinda OT, but what are peoples thoughts on Naxcom? I've been surfing it daily (more becuase it's not blocked at work, shhh, don't tell Brian) and find that the prices are great.

I agree...I'd say that 1/3 of the limited # of auctions I run are paid for with a method other than PayPal......there are probably millions of people who are out there who don't trust disclosing financial information whatsoever over the internet.....

They've basically switched to all online payment services, but they haven't opened it up to every online payment service out there. I'm assuming they've limited it to ones that they can link up to the auction directly. If a buyer or seller has a large percentage of items not being paid through one of these services, it is likely cause for raising a red flag. It wouldn't be hard to look at numbers and pick out sellers who are likely doing a lot of business outside of approved channels.

Does this mean Canadian sellers can accept and pay with m/o on Ebay.CA??

beat me to it... from what i read and understand, cheque and MO are allowed on .CA if you are selling to someone in CANADA, if its to someone in the states, no MO or Cheque


Also just noticed that they are instating a MAXIMUM SHIPPING FEE for certain items... brutal

I think eBay.ca is being handled differently, that was my understanding from the email I got. I`m sure it will eventually change though.

I also state in my listings that I only accept PayPal, a lot quicker and I would rather get payment and send the item and be done with it instead of waiting for money orders or checks to cross the painfully slow border up here.

Buried deep in the FAQ section is the note that they are going to be making the same changes on eBay.ca in 2009. Also, you won't be able to say that you accept cheques or money orders in your auction description, only in the 'Accepted payment methods'.
 
How convenient though that eBay owns PayPal and decides to outlaw alternative payment methods.. Even more fees in their pocket when sellers are forced to give up PayPal fees every time they sell something. Greed, greed, greed!
 
Bit much isn't it. Most of us use paypal but what about the people who don't. It elimates them unless they use an online payment. What the most used and who gets the benefits......all about the cash
 
Ever since Meg Whittman left and this new CEO Donahue came in, ebay.com has really changed, and personally I think for the worse. I am both an avid buyer and seller and this is getting beyond ridiculous. I can't wait for H.I. to open up the marketplace.

I'm with those who have said that they would like to see FeeBay enforce it. They can't. Much like they can't stop offline selling. On a side note, I can't remember the last time someone won one of my auctions and paid by MO. It might be me, but I would say that better than most of buyers are using PayPal anyways.
 
The percentage of people out there on ebay with only MO/checks as their option has to be close to 10%

Kinda sucks but I guess there goes 10% of my buyers out there =/
 
Much ado about nothing. Many of you forget one simple fact:
No seller worth his salt is going to let something as ridiculous as this asinine eBay policy come between him and a sale. Even many of the sellers who say they only accept paypal will cheerfully make an exception if asked politely.

This isn't going to be enforceable. Mainly because unlike other changes, users won't want it to be so.
