Beckett finally caving?

I tried giving them one more shot simply in an attempt to maybe find a few cards I can't find between here and ebay, but when they banned trading on the forums, that was it for me.

Several sites have benefited from Beckett's colossal gaffe.
HI got the Hockey guys
HK got the BKB guys
FCB got the baseball guys
not sure where the FB guys went

aint that the truth. hockey always has more than a few people looking at it... no matter what time of day or night.

as far as people being screwed over on trades back in their Beckett days, all i can say is that i did 65 or so trades over the course of a year or two and never got screwed over, nor did i ever screw anyone. i did have one person who was a royal pain in the @ss to deal with, he sent before we agreed on a trade, took waaaayy too long to get back to me, etc. but that was the only semi-bad experience that i ever had there.

needless to say, stuff is better regulated over here (as Beckett trading wasn't regulated, it relied on the honesty of everyone) and easier to use. everything is public.

to that, Bruce, i say thank you and give you a big

for the site

Interesting that they backed off their stance about charging for trading... guess the reduction in traffic made them realize it was a stupid mistake.

As for HI being better... well, who am I to disagree with truth!?!? :D And if you guys like it so much... don't forget to throw a shekel or two in the pot to keep the lights on, k? There is NO advertising on this site for a reason... I hate it. I want pure hobby information and nothing more. So, in that case, I'm reliant on you guys as users to help pay for the hosting. The little green button on the menu bar that says "Donate" takes you through to paypal. Thanks :)

Now that the free trading tree has fallen in the Beckett forest, how many of them are left to hear it fall... and will telling their friends make much difference?
My vote: Nope!

I am kind of interested in how many collectors they lost with there moves this past year. I see quite a few collectors on here that I dealt with on Beckett. They screwed up when they got rid of the monthly hocket beckett, changed there website, and fired Al Muir.

Beckett forgot the average collector that only collects one sport. If I wanted a multisport magazine I would have been buying Tuff Stuff all these years.

Is there even enough members remaining over there now to trade? Between changing the site and changing to a multi sport format Beckett has certainly shot themselves in the foot.

Whoever is now running Beckett got greedy. Beckett now has there hands in distribution of cards, selling cards (Internet), grading cards, and pricing cards. It is a huge conflict of interest on there part.

Good example I go to my local Walmart (Beckett Supplied) and buy a pack of hockey cards and pull a sweet Carey Price YG Rc. Then I decide to send it in to get graded. Beckett already has there own grading service and is in Partnership with the three other major grading companies. So my only option is Beckett Grading. I get the card back and am wondering what it is worth. Surprise! Surprise! I have to look in Beckett Grading Magazine to see what it is worth because they are the only publication that has pricing.

Whats next for Beckett producing there own cards or memorabilia.

...Therein lies the problem. The mentality of the majority of collectors is that Beckett is still THE authority on pricing. "I HAVE TO" check what Beckett says. This is what has kept Beckett at all relevant, despite the disdain of collectors, and the mismanagement at Beckett.

You don't have to check Beckett. They were once the authority, but Napoleon was once Emperor of France. Last I checked, he doesn't have a lot of pull these days either.

But as long as every time you show up at a shop, or a card show, and you base your buying/selling/trading decisions on what Beckett says, you are giving them more power than they have shown they deserve.

Could not have said it better myself. Someone needs to sticky this response!

All fair comment, but the guys behind the counters have to throw away the mags too... and there is ZERO appetite for that in my experience.

I guess we all need to band together and start the First official Hobby Insider Price Guide. Beckett never talks to the real people running the Industry (The Consumer). I think we have a whole better grasp on what is going on better than them. All they look at for market pricing are results from Beckett online, Ebay, and dealer info.

It seems that they have failed to realize that by alienating the board users and causing major disruptions to the site they have basically cut off their nose to spite their face. It kind of reminds me of the thinking behind the titanic, we are indestructible..nothing will sink us.

When Jim Beckett sold the company, Beckett magazine officially died. Whoever is calling the shots over there needs to be raked over the coals for fixing what clearly wasn't broken.
