1990 Pro Set Stanley Cup Hologram...anybody watching this madness???

I remember busting a ton of the Proset and Score as well. Like someone else said, the cheap wax is what got a lot of us into the hobby. I don't think I even know about the hologram when I was opening it.

I remember hearing this as well. Doesn't seem plausible to me though.

I understand this completely. I did the same kind of thing. Back when 1991-92 Upper Deck Lo Series came out I traded my Mario Lemieux OPC RC for a box and $40.

Yeah, it was in Beckett Hockey at the time. I have no idea if it really worked though.

And given how much of Series 1 there was, you were just as likely to find a Stanley Cup hologram on a random stretch of beach!
 
I've been trying to ignore this card...

It was the holy grail when I was young. Never saw one. Only heard about them in school. Parents never bought me a pack of cards. Waste of money they said. I picked up all the Pro Set commons left in bad condition after flicksies on window sills at break and they were my treasured cards. Thought people made this Stanley Cup hologram card. Didn't believe it was real.

It's an interesting card considering it is Pro Set and #/5000. However, it is certainly an icon. Love how it is more about the struggle for the Cup. Also, condition is very tough on this card and usually the centering is awful.

Can anyone post the PSA grading population report? I would be interested to see it.
 
Too many of them to remain this high, I still think it drops back to a $200 card soon. Lucky for me I already have 2 copies that I bought here on the boards. I should send both in for grading as one is really high grade and the other is decent as well. The only reason I haven’t sent them in is that they will never leave my collection. I love them, they bring back great nostalgic memories. I hope they hold value or continue to climb but at 5000 copies I don’t see it happening.

I have seen countless copies AND have owned four of these in 28 years. It seems that there was very little QC involved in the creation of the 5000 copies that are out there. If they're not off centered, they're chipped. If they're not chipped, they're scratched. If they're not scratched, they're miscut. Lord only knows how many are still trapped in the millions of cases that are out there. Normally I would agree with you, but I can see this card continuing to climb and I can also see this card joining the TRUE vintage cards as a card that is worth a ton in high grade form.

Unless of course, the dreaded buyer's group is on the loose here :)
 
Let me just add to the rumor mill on this card. In around 2001 or so, I saw a copy on eBay that claimed to be copy #1. It didn't quite look like the other ones. I didn't take a screenshot of it and I no longer remember the differences. I thought it unlikely at the time that the card had been faked and it wouldn't surprise me at all if this card had variants given who manufactured it.
 
During the 90’s there was a lot of counterfeit cards made. Some were easy to find but some where really well done. It wouldn’t shock me at all to hear these are also counterfeited. I have notice proofs being sold with no number listed, these seem to be popping up in the SC as well as 75th anniversary holograms.

Awesome to see thanks. Shocking to see that for such a popular sensitive fairly rare card with so many graded. I assume it’s because most collectors don’t bother as probably 90% have dings, scratches or poorly cut. Why grade something that come in at a 5 or less. Seeing those numbers makes me consider sending my two in, I think I have an 8 and 7.

I think mine was the first PSA 8 graded. Pack pulled back in 2014. Still in my collection today, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Especially since I finally have someone to pass it down to. Maybe she will appreciate cards, maybe she won't, but at least she will have one of the iconic cards to pawn when she is older :)
