Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the month of August. As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 14 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase. Now onto the show!
2005-06 UD Phenomenal Beginnings Gold Set + Oversized card
If you viewed last month's S&T post, I was able to swing a deal that resulted in me acquiring the extremely rare, randomly inserted, Crosby rookie autograph found in the 05-06 Phenomenal Beginnings boxes. Having already acquired the regular base set, I figured I may as well complete the set by acquiring the gold set and oversized Crosby card. The only thing that differentiates the regular base from the gold is that the stripes on either side are golden rather than silver. I also grabbed 2 opened boxes, one which features the "gold edition" label and one without. So here they are together as one set:
Regular Base Set + Box:
Gold Base Set + Box:
Oversized Card:
Autographed Card 16/25:
2005-06 UD Collectibles Die-Cast #DCSC1
This is a purchase I've been mulling over for what seems like years. While its not technically a rookie or possibly even a hockey card, it resembles his rookie young gun so much that I figured I'd pick it up. The fact that it is still sealed in plastic with the Zamboni makes it even better. I remember seeing these for sale years ago in Toys 'R' Us back in the day, so I'm happy to finally pull the trigger.
2005-06 UD Ice Fresh Ice Jersey Jussi Jokinen (3-colour)
I always love adding 3-colour variations of typically common jersey cards. It can make seemingly common cards much more rare and special. It would be interesting to see how many 2 and 3 colour variations there are out there. All I know is that the 3-colour versions would be a very small percentage in comparison to single and dual colour cards.
2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects White Parallel Tim Connolly #13 (3/10)
I was happy to pick up a small Tim Connolly lot from Sweden which contained a few cards I need for my sets. One of them being this White Parallel from the Hot Prospects series numbered to 10. While the overall design is sharp, I feel that a parallel /10 could have had refractive coating or stamping, but thats just my opinion.
2005-06 UD MVP Platinum Tim Connolly #55 (9/25)
Another addition from the Connolly lot, the MVP cards from 05-06 had a great clean, sharp design. Not too complicated and very symmetrical. The gold and platinum parallels had different foil and border colouring which makes completed rainbows look great together.
And now the Top 3...
#3. 2005-06 The Cup Magenta Printing Plate Alexandre Picard (1/1)
This card was actually a gift from a fellow forum member so thanks David! A former Halifax Moosehead, Picard had a decent NHL career which lasted until the 2011-12 season. To my surprise, he continues to play in the DEL with Duesseldorf EG.
#2. UD High Glossy cards /10
Three incredible additions to the HG set. The Stuart was also a gift from David, the Souray from the HI facebook group (thanks Jean-Francois!) and the Connolly from Sweden. What is particularity special about the Souray is that it was actually recently pulled from a pack! Its crazy to think about what may still lie unopened in old sealed boxes. I do own an unopened 05-06 Series 1 box, and who knows, maybe one day I'll open it to find a Crosby HG rookie in there haha. The 3 HG cards now bring the set to 182/487 or 37% complete.
#1. UD Victory Black Kari Lehtonen #9 (1/5)
This is the toughest set I've ever attempted, and thats saying alot considering I'm tackling the HG set. What makes the Lehtonen card particularly rare is that, with it being number 9, it means that it was released in the actual victory boxes. The first 200 cards of the set (1-200) were released in the victory boxes while the last hundred (201-300) were issued in Series 2 boxes as an update set. It seems to me that due to the amount of Series 2 opened in search of the Ovechkin rookie, the victory black update cards are much more abundant than those from the actual victory boxes. To put it into perspective, of the 58 black parallels I own, only 17 are from the first 200, so roughly one third. The set now sits at 58/300 or 19.3%.
Well if you have made it this far, thank you for the time and please do not hesitate to contact me with information on cards I need or those you are looking to sell. Looking forward to what September will bring, comments/feedback are welcome and have a great weekend everyone!
