Interesting listening to Elliotte Friedman talk about this that the talk, on both sides, is revolving around a 5-6 year deal because, on the Leafs end it would cost too much to try and go 7-8 and buy up more UFA years.

Also found it interesting that he said Marner would be more likely, but not actually likely, to sign an offer sheet than Matthews.

If Marner's dad pumps his head full of ideas like he pumps his kid to the TO media I could see why EF would say that. I really hope we finally see GMs really start to use offer sheets this off season.

It's probably a smart bet for Matthews. A 5-6 year deal makes him a FA again at 26-27 where he could demand and still get a monster contract. As long as he avoids major injury, he'd probably make more money and maintain a good chance to win.

Has anyone heard what the AAV they're discussing?

I can't understand why the Leafs would want to do only 5, unless he's taking a serious discount... which I also dobt see happening. He might not want 7 or 8... but if they're going to go beyond 3, then 6 is the minimum the Leafs should be considering.

One of the local sports talk shows mentioned the US tv deal is coming up soon. If it sees a significant boost (which it may, given the value of franchises lately) then the cap could greatly increase, meaning more money on the table. Matthews could potentially cash in better with a short term deal.

It also sounds like Matthews is the focus first, with Marner to follow.

Again, just local radio talk.

The 5-6 year contract really does make sense for both sides. It gives Matthews another chance to cash in with a big money, long term deal, and it allows the Maple Leafs to keep the cap hit a bit lower, because they're buying up fewer UFA years, and a chance to keep everyone that they want.

Whatever they give Matthews, I'm guessing (Paul) Marner will expect the same...I think that one could be a tough one to negotiate.

I think Marner will end up in the 9 range. Two mil more than Nylander, 2 mil less than Matthews/Tavares.

I think that's fair for him.

I think the Leafs are dreaming, if they believe Matthews will sign as cheap as Tavares did. Maybe I'll be proven wrong... but I doubt AM is playing for a nickle less than McDavid is getting.
