Let's see now.

Almost single-handedly destroy the franchise? Check

Cause division in the room? Check

Cause the REAL captain to give up his C and then proceed to be the worst captain in Canucks history? Check

Cause the trade of the REAL captain? Check

Not care about a family's feelings or the team's policy on jersey numbers? Check.

Basically do nothing but collect a paycheque for 3 years? Check.

Go down as the second biggest ***hole to ever wear a Canuck uniform? Check

And now they have to pay the prick more money. Oh well, it's been years, but that dark chapter is finally over.

You forgot that the Canucks never made it to the playoffs under his watch.....

Believe me, Brian. I have NOT forgotten that.

How anyone can mention that prick's name when talking about 'great leaders' or 'great captains' is beyond me.

Oh, COME ON. He's only the second greatest Canuck ever behind Pavel Bure. HATERS GON' HATE.

He was a great player and leader in Edmonton with Wayne and after his departure. He was a great player and a leader in NY. Heck, if not for him, they would still be chanting 1940 at Islanders/Rangers games. The Canucks thing didn't work out and they bought him out. I've seen the same thing happen to Selanne in Colorado and I don't see the Avalanche fans claiming Selanne is the anti-christ.... The $6MM was a contract thing.....

Honestly, blaming Messier for the Canucks franchise being doomed... Really?!

Mike, you obviously don't know the **** that went down when he was in Vancouver. I'll leave it at that.

And, for the record, I have NEVER claimed he wasn't a great hockey player. Indeed, one of the all-time greats for sure. But he sure wasn't a great player/leader/captain in those three years.

Comparing Selanne in Colorado is just ridiculous. Selanne is all-class, and never would have even thought of pulling some of the **** that 'the greatest leader in sports' did in Vancouver.

You're right Randy and I do not know all the **** that went down in Vancouver. That said, Messier's numbers in Vancouver:

1997-98 Vancouver Canucks NHL 82 22g 38a 60pts
1998-99 Vancouver Canucks NHL 59 13 35 48
1999-00 Vancouver Canucks NHL 66 17 37 54

Selanne in Colorado:

2003-04 Colorado Avalanche NHL 78 16 16 32

For the record, both are among my favorite players to watch in the past 25 years. Just saying somethimes even for a great player, the place, system, coaches, environment, etc... it just doesn't work.

Not to hijack the thread, just wondering who was number one? Not trying to awake a giant, just curious :)

What Randy really means is that Messier is his second favorite Canuck of all-time behind the great "Russian Rocket" Pavel Bure. Randy loooooooooooves him some Pavel Bure.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread....

WHatever type of person he is or for all the alleged stuff he did or not do in Vancouver, according to an arbitrator he was owed some money.

I don't know many on this board that would not go after 6 million from a previous employer if you thought you were entitled to it in your contract. I have never heard of a clause like that anyways.

I don't think this changes his reputation. On ice personas are usually not the same as off ice realities.

Wow, I just read the story on the number thing. What a douche. That just really changed my opinion of him completely.

Ugh. I don't even want to think about that time in Canucks history.

Messier and Keenan.......forever in my doghouse.

Well put Randy. It was a dark chapter in franchise history. And I agree 100% about who was the REAL captain he ran out of town........Mr. Trevor Linden. Certainly the top Canuck of all time.

It would just sicken me to watch Messier float around, miss defensive responsibilities, and continue to get prime ice time under Keenan. Meanwhile, if another play got beat by a better player, they got benched.

I don't know what else went down that got Linden in Keenan's doghouse, but it was ridiculous. Couldn't stand how Keenan played favourites. So glad Linden came back to retire as a Canuck.

It was a bad decision to sign Messier. I'm surprised that he actually accepted the deal. Maybe it was for the money. But with the history of 1994, it didn't make sense to me.

I also remember in 1999 after the Canucks had a miserable season (2nd worst record) and missed the playoffs, a few days after Messier was in New York celebrating Gretzky's retirement. Not that Messier shouldn't have been there to celebrate, but it was just weird seeing him soak up the NYR fan reception as a member of the Canucks.

I guess the silver lining is that we got to draft the Sedins.

I don't totally begrudge Messier squeezing more money out of the Canucks. As far as I'm concerned, if the Canucks hadn't bought him out and started turning the franchise around, they'd be in Seattle right now, so they owe him that thanks for sucking so badly that he had to be sent packing and making the Canucks ownership come to their senses. Before the Messier signing, they were a decent, borderline playoff team that could've gone places if not for the constant stuffing at the hands of the Avalanche. By the time the Mark Messier world tour was complete in Vancouver, they were perpetual 20 games below .500 finishers, and playing in front of like 47 people a night.

Dude's owed money...sure. But once he was gone, the Canucks turned around and in one decade, went from being one of the worst franchises of the last 30 years to one of the best, and consistently. The Canucks fans came back in droves once Messier stopped sucking the life out of the franchise, and are more supportive than ever. Without Messier providing Canucks fans this dark period in franchise history, we'd be oblivious to this light at the end of the dark tunnel.

So...thank you from the bottom of my heart you money leeching, spirit sucking, playoff ducking, team policy ****ing gift to the game of hockey. Without your effective leadership, the Canucks franchise wouldn't be where it is today.

Sure is funny how teams find whipping boys out of nowhere. Kind of like how us Rags fans blame Kovalev for all of our 90's woes... Or how my Mets blamed Bonilla for their issues for years (even to this day). When really all you have to do is look at the team being put out there.

Can't expect to change the minds of the ranters, but Mess didn't rip the C off anyone chest. Nor did Mess trade Linden to the islanders shortly thereafter. Nor did Mess trade Bure, the face of the team, for nothing in '99. Nor did Mess demand to wear 11 or sit out, he was given 11 by an owner who had more respect for Mess than the deceased player who precede him. I have yet to find a negative article regarding the Messier-Maki incident against Moose; they are all against Quinn.

For the record:

In 97-98, the Nucks finished last in the West, and Messier finished 2nd on the team in scoring

In 98-99, the Nucks finished last in the west, and Messier finished 2nd on the team in scoring

In 99-00, the Nucks finished tied for 10th in the West, and Messier still finished 3rd in scoring in an injury shortened year.

Be mad, angry, or upset. But aside from walking on water, there is nothing Moose could have done with the garbage lineup that Vancouver was putting out there. Check the yearly stats, they are quite amusing....

Regardless if they owe him the money they should pay him. Bure was also screwed over financially by the Canucks when he played there.

This is pretty much bang on. You could have put Gretzky on that Canucks and they still would have been the Canucks lol. Messier is one of the NHl all time leaders no question about it!
