It was reported in the Vancouver Canucks twitter account that they are retiring Pavel Bure's number during the 13-14 NHL season

I think it's dumb as well.

This is an EXTREMELY talented player who was the Canucks first superstar and probably remains their best player in history, but with his attitude and the holdout, I don't think he's worthy of being hung from the rafters.

He played 7 seasons as a member of the Canucks - 3 were great, 3 were okay and 1 was cut short. I don't think that

The Canucks have retired 4.5 jerseys, reached 3 finals and won 0 cups. In my mind, only 2 of the numbers (12 and 16) SHOULD have been pulled out of circulation with 3 or 4 other jerseys had special situations for them (11, 28, 37 and possibly 38).

On 1 hand im glad his number will be retired. He was the most electrifying when he was at his prime. I also get why some hate him. The way he went about leaving the team could have been different. I think its the russian way though. But hey he isn't no Lebron. am i right Cleveland. lol.

ok this might be dumb from me but i know who 11(maki) 28(bourdon) and 37(rypien) are. but who is 38? I'm sure im gonna give myself a stupid smack when you say who it is but im having a brain fart. :|

Nick's right - 38 was Demitra. He didn't have the stay that the others did and had already left the organization (as did Ryp) but Demitra's stay with the Canucks was 2 seasons. Maki passed away during the season, Boundron was a member of the team when he passed away and Rypien had been a member for 6-7 seasonbs.

I thought he held out because the Canucks owner at the time wouldn't pay Bure money he was owed/promised.

Bure arrived in LA waiting to meet with the Canucks who left him sitting for weeks.
Bure was asked to pay $50,000 of his salary towards buying him out of his Russian contract
After winning the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year, the Canucks felt he needed to prove his value more before signing a new contract.
After agreeing to a contract of similar value to Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Mogilny, the Canucks pulled the rug out from under Bure by making the numbers in Canadian dollars instead of American dollars, a very uncommon practice.
Canucks refused to pay a signing bonus they owed him.
Broken promises about moving Pavel, and a handful of other instances destroying trust.

There is also an interview stating that somebody in management said Bure would sit out game 7 if he didn't get paid extra for the game. That was the last straw for Bure.

Bure volunteered to pay $50K towards the buyout, the Canucks paid it.

The Canucks management and officials from the Soviet Ice Hockey Federation met in late-October 1991 in a Detroit court, where they bartered for a cash settlement. After the Canucks offered $200,000, Bure stood up in the courtroom to offer an additional $50,000, bringing the total to $250,000. The Soviet officials accepted, and Canucks management paid the full $250,000.

He had signed a four year deal and wanted out after one year. This is considered okay?

This is all rumour and innuendo, and if true it does explain why he held out, but much of this came to light from Tony Gallagher who was a PA shill at the time. That the payment was made in Canadian dollars is true, but we don't know what was arranged by the agent. I find it hard to believe that the making the payment in Canadian $ didn't get the agents attention.

Also, the signing bonus not being paid was due to the NHL lockout and was a league issue at the time. The Canucks had apparently agreed that he would be paid regardless of the strike and the NHL didn't like it. Hard to lockout players if they get paid anyways.

The interview about him holding out if he didn't get a new contract is either for Game 7 vs Calgary or Game 5 vs the Leafs while he was under contract. This is how he tried to negotiate a new deal with the playoffs and next season already under contract. Does not fly with me either.

He was owed money from a guaranteed contract. There was an excellent article in one of the hockey magazines about it a few months ago. I think Brian Burke was the biggest problem, no surprise there.

There is always two sides to a story.

Bure deserves this!

Only him and Linden should be up there.

Both sides are not completely blameless over what's transpired over the years. But to not induct a newly enshrined HOF'er in your own city makes the Canucks look even more silly to the rest of the NHL.

He belongs in the rafters imo based on talent alone.
