I would disagree only because dynasty's do not 'begin'. There is a point where they BEGAN - but that is after they were established. Hell - I hear most hockey writers argue that the Wings are not even a dynasty since they only won two in a row and then not again for three years.

To me a dynasty is a level of excellence that lasts for five or more years at the top of the sport. In today's game that means surviving free agency and the dreaded 'Cap' - that is something the Pens will have to deal with starting next year!!! With $45M promised to only 14 players - the Pens will already be scrambling to fill the team in. And then $38 promised to only 10 players in 2010/11.
And now the Pens get to draft last (#30) - add that in to last years late draft position, and you will see the importance of coming up with gems in later positions. That is another key - to get value when you are no longer at the top of the draft!!!!

Staying on top is a whole hell of a lot harder than getting there!!!!

yes, since the previous cup that the pens won 17 years ago, the wings won 4 cups, went to the finals 6x, seems like a dozen or so presidents trophies but the parades do average 750k to a reported 1.2M back in 97 or 98

pittsburgh the new hockey town?

detroit is known as hockeytown (usa) because not only we have the wings, we also have U-M wolverines, MSU spartans, even scrub party school ferris state (your boy kunitz went there)

potential prospects such as Pat Kane leave their families at 13-14 to play for nationally known programs such as honeybaked ham sponsored (midget?) hockey programs, US national development program in Ann Arbor, the OHL Plymouth Whalers, the list goes on.............
 
I hear Fleury apologized to the parents of little kids for swearing (twice) during the celebrations. That's kind of funny.

Which leads me to ask...why do the TV guys feel the need to shove a microphone near the faces (not interviews - during celebrations) of players during their most emotionally high moments of some of their young lives? Of course you're going to scream effin' A!!!
 
The parade looked awesome, and like a lot of fun. But since when is Pittsburgh, City of Champions? Edmonton used to use that name, when they actually had good teams there.

I definitely give all the credit to your teams. I myself, have always been a Pens fan - since I was young. But to me, to legitimize that claim, you have to have more championships than that. When Edmonton claimed that name, it was during the dynasty of the 80's. Their CFL team was also winning championships. If, in the next few years, the Steelers and/or the Pens continue to win titles, then the claim is legit.

So the numbers are 375,000 for the parade today. Not too shabby for a 2.4M metro population and other hockey markets like Columbus, Philly, Washington, Buffalo and NJ not too far away

They had to fill in this year and still won the cup. They lost two of their top players (Hossa and Malone) to free agency, lost some third liners, made a horrible FA signing in Satan, fired their coach, and lost Gonchar for 2/3 of the season and you think it can't be done again? With 3 strong centermen under the age of 22 and Fleury, I like our chances. :dance::dance:
 
I believe they've been calling Pittsburgh the City of Champions for years. I think it originated with the Steelers winning 4 Super Bowls back in the 70's.
 
I already had this discussion on another board. But seriously, dont flatter yourself with this City Of Champions facade. Pittsburgh is more the LUCKIEST city of America. Steelers one by tip toes and the Pens won with protest (Malkin non-suspension).
 
Hey now, don't be so hard on him, that's the first good thing that has happened to Philly since 1980 when Tug McGraw was jumping around like a maniac. What did you expect from someone who lives in a city where they boo Santa Claus? Wouldn't you be bitter if you were a Flyer fan too? I mean, they haven't won anything since........since.......since.......little help here?

Lowly???? the Rays beat the Sox and were the best team in the AL, and have a stacked Lineup. Hardly Lowly.

and we had well over a million at the Phillies parade, I think it was close to 2 million. THATS A PARADE.
