Colorado Avalanche: Whats next, specifically what will Joe Sakic do?

This team used to be of one of the elite of the NHL. After a fall from the top and a rebuild with a bunch of young forwards, it looks like they are rebuilding again.

I am hoping Rob Blake doesn't end up the LA version of Sakic in Colorado.

Joe still has time to turn it around but I feel this summer will make or break Sakic's fate in Colorado's front office. He needs to choose very wisely with whatever lottery pick they get for 2017 or deal it well. He also needs to deal someone for D, likely Duchene, and build around MacKinnon, Landeskog, Jost and Rantanen.

I think Colorado might be best served not taking Nolan Patrick if they get the #1 pick and maybe trading down to get a top 5 still and some help on D?

Maybe work out a prearranged deal where Vegas takes some solid dmen in the expansion draft, trades them and a top 5 pick to Avs for the #1 if they get it and it starts the Golden Knights off with that glitzy #1 pick? Everyone wins there?

What would you do if you were Sakic to turn the ship around? Who would trade out of their core players?

All of them? Really? Nathan MacKinnon is definitely one of the best young players in the NHL and, IMO, has justified his #1 overall status considering the mess of a team he plays for. Where would they find anyone equal to him in a trade? Rantanen is also a helluva player, going to be a stud I think in the Barkov mold. Jost has potential and I think Landeskog would be difficult to replace; solid power forwards are a rare commodity.

Seems a little much to trade them all?
 
The next move for the aves Barry straight up...fire Sakic. He's a legend but reality is he's not a great gm. Wasn't a fan of Roy as a coach but he had his points..... why Sakic signed Barrie is beyond me. I agree with Scott to a point and start fresh but it has to start at the front office and continue from there
 
I agree with bto3105 Sakic is not a GM.I disagree with firing him though,he needs to move to pres of hockey ops and a proven GM hired as his replacement.
 
I really don't know anymore this team is such a mess. I thought Bednar was the answer... got the best offense out of Lake Erie (winning the Calder Cup in defining fashion).

I love super Joe, maybe not the best GM though. Wouldn't mind going after Lombardi and Sutter, would be harsh on Jared though

I think Landy, MacKinnon, Duchene and a few other players are good but the rest of the team is terrible
 
Build around the young core of MacKinnon/Rantanen/Jost and move Duchene/Landeskog while they still have value.

Assuming they get first overall keep the pick and take Nolan Patrick. I never agree with trading down or skipping the best player to take a different position - when you have the power of the first pick you ALWAYS take the best player no matter what and worry about other positions later. Especially in a relatively weak draft.

Besides, IF they moved Duchene you're going to want another center on the depth chart. Move MacKinnon up to the first line with Rantanen and slot Patrick into the second or third line.

As for front office stuff I don't know what to say there. I was as big a Sakic fan as anybody when he played but I'm never sold on former players running teams until the team accomplished something. Yzerman has done well so far, Sakic not so much.
 
I agree with the above that state Sakic isn't cut to be GM. I think he would still do some good in a different role, maybe like a Pres of Hockey Ops role, let someone else take over the GM duties. I'm not sure if Bednar is the answer either, but I guess you have to give him one more try after that dumpster fire of a season. I would prefer to keep Landeskog over Duchene if one of them has to go, but I think like B mentioned players like Landeskog are hard to come by so his value might be higher that Dutchy's, and I don't exactly trust Joe to make great trade decisions at this point.

I would:

Keep at least Mackinnon, Rantanen, Jost - those are my big 3 going forward. I'd like to hold onto Landeskog as well, and hopefully get Patrick, or at least stay in the Top 3 and get one of Patrick/Hischier/Velardi. D is obviously a huge issue, so I would use Duchene to try and acquire a quality D man. I'd like to see some of the young guys have some expanded roles next year. I'd like to see Jost, and maybe guys like Greer or Compher get a little more action and see how they look.
 
First thing they should do is fire Sakic, before he makes a bigger mess.

My bet: Tyson Barrie is gone (please Edmonton, buy him for pennies on the dollar) and so is Duchene. MacKinnon isn't going anywhere. Landeskog? I'm betting he sticks around for another year before getting dealt.
 
I wanted to revisit this after the draft lottery.

The sentiment here is Sakic is not a good GM and at this point I will not argue that. I will give him one more year to disprove that theory and it will all start at the draft.

With the Avs getting the worst hand possible dealt to them picking 4th, Sakic is now sitting in a position of weakness. Had they secured the #1 or even top 3 pick I believe, they would have gotten one of the "can't miss" prospects in this draft class.

But now they are gambling a little at 4 and teams KNOW that. So Sakic will almost certainly have to move Duchene and/or Landeskog for some defensive help that they may have to overpay for, meaning they will not get good return on either player. I am still of the mindset Landeskog is a much more valuable asset to the team and they should keep him. Duchene is a talented player but they have other good, young, scoring forwards, not a true power forward like Landeskog.

Losing that top 3 pick really ramrodded them.

Or they continue the good ol boys club and draft Callan Foote. :D

Are they truly can't miss prospects though Barrie? While Patrick or Hischler appear to be very talented players, it sounds like they're a cut below the top draft picks that have gone the last couple years. If anything, it might force them to use that pick to draft a blueliner in the first round, which I think has been one of the bigger problems for the Avs.
 
I think you can get Cal Foote later in the first round than 4th, so I would almost explore trading back a few picks in the first round to take him, or somehow use that 4th pick to acquire a good D-man. I think Patrick/Hischier have been compared to Seguin/Hall so you would think those are "can't miss" guys. But with this draft after 1-2 is seems to be a log jam of prospects who are at similar levels and not the "elite" talent we have come to expect from top picks, as we've been spoiled the past 2 years with generational guys like McDavid/Eichel and Matthews/Laine being taken atop the draft.

I will give Kevin Lowe credit for not drafting his own son.... while also laughing about the fact that if they had taken him in the 3rd round (he went 73rd overall) his 2 NHL games would be two more than they guy they took at 62).


Is Foote working for the Avs? I know you're just joking... but I really can't see them taking him, if his father is working there. Too many issues with it.

That's why I put can't miss in quotes, they are "can't miss" relative to the talent pool in this draft. As Derrick said, not generational type talents as far as anyone can tell. But we've all been wrong before.

They need 1 or 2 more good dmen for sure. Maybe another goalie for the system? I'm thinking if Sakic is smart he will make a trade for a really good dman and draft one at 4.

Cal Foote was some joking on my part, you guys got it though.
 
The Leafs need to stock the cupboards with defensive prospects this draft. We are looking very good offensively and have a glut of forwards, especially wingers. I hope every single pick we make this summer is a defenseman. Maybe we'll end up with Cal Foote since he's likely to go mid first round where we'll be picking.
