First Chris Pronger, now Pavel Datsyuk... It appears Arizona enjoys collecting contracts of players who will never play a game for them

Well, it helps them to make it to the salary cap floor. As I understand it, the contract counts against their cap space, but they don't actually have to pay out the cash.

Detroit sends Pavel Datsyuk &16th pick to the Coyotes in exchange for
20th pick & 53rd pick & Joe Vitale

Kinda confused abt this one. It sounds more like Detroit was trying to free salary cap space.
Just surprised the Leafs didn't jump on this one. They had 2 2nd round picks as well as others they could have used to land a solid Forward.

Solid forward? You do realize that Datsyuk has confirmed that he is retiring from the NHL and returning to Russia, correct?

This was a contract dump, nothing else. Gives Detroit cap space, and helps Arizona hit the cap floor.

Essentially just sent his "contract" to the Coyotes and now the Wings are free to really go after Stamkos. Makes sense since Datsyuk will go back to Russia and retire from the NHL (will play KHL, most likely).

The Wings get Pavels contract off their books and free up cap space to go after Stamkos or another sniper. The Yotes reach the cap floor without paying out any actual $$. Pavel heads home to Russia....... and everyone is happy. :)
