Fake Patches and Trimmed High End Cards

I know UD is trying to bring back some of the set building products (like Synergy) but I wish there were more OPC/MVP type releases. It doesn't need to be super cheap but something geared towards set building. An easy base set, some SPs and even tough SSPs plus inserts and parallels. I know for a fact many people would enjoy these because I have more people message me about MVP and O-Pee-Chee than any other product I bust and it's not even close.

I agree 100%.

Isn't it also because those are two of the few sets that have more than the same 90 or so players in every release?

MVP and OPC are indeed the only main players in the low-end set building (the bulk of my card show customer base). Flagship has it's own following, but the base set is pretty much a by-product.

As a set Synergy is essentially a $5 A CARD product, once you consider most packs have a fluff insert in them. I like it, but it basically is a super-collector product.

Gomaz - saw your post on BO about the Bower PWCC return. I think sharing here would be valuable.

And for those that haven’t been following, this thing is going wide. Comc sellers trimming 5 dollar cards to make 25 dollar cards.

PSA Cert #:27581431

1954 Parkhurst #65 Johnny Bowers (Bower) PSA 7 to PSA 8
Alteration types: Trimming

Sold on 12/7/2016 as a PSA 7 by eBay seller beardentoys to whitman111 (Gary Moser's eBay ID) for $395.75
Consigned to PWCC and sold on 9/26/2017 as a PSA 8 for $838.00
Final price: $838.00
Value gain: $442.25

The left edge here on this 1954 Parkhurst Bower card has been significantly trimmed. The red circles on the back are print marks and/or paper fibers common to both images, confirming it is the same card. This set is as dangerous as any of them due to risk of buying an altered card.

Well this bites.

I did receive the following email from PWCC regarding this card:

PWCC Marketplace is reaching out to buyers of cards that have been sold recently which PWCC believes have evidence of alteration. We have identified the dealer who submitted your altered card and, working with the dealer and the grading company, we will work to refund your purchase price as well as taking the card out of circulation – by ultimately causing the card to be forwarded to law enforcement.

The card(s) in question for which we'd like to arrange a return are as follows:

ITEM TITLE: 1954 Parkhurst Johnny Bower ROOKIE RC #65 PSA 8 NM-MT (PWCC)
SALE PRICE: $838
SALE DATE: September 26, 2017

Please reply to this email and confirm your willingness to have the item returned and we will then issue you a pre-paid shipping label and work on refunding your money.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and hope to regain your trust in PWCC.

Thank you,

PWCC Marketplace

I will be returning the card, have already deleted from my PSA registry and am back on the hunt for a nice unaltered replacement copy.

I am happy to see PWCC send out these emails and also that BODA is helping keep the hobby accountable.

Thanks Jeremy and that sucks.

Note to anyone that collects parkies, these cards have been exploited by trimmers. 51s and 54s in particular

This is a biggie...

Card was sold unaltered by eBay ID nickhockeycards as a PSA 6 (ST) on 2/23/2018 for $5,000. It was first sold trimmed as a SGC 8 by Mile High on 10/4/2018 for $52,332, before being sold by Heritage on 8/18/19 for $37,200. It is currently being auctioned by Heritage again. Multiple edges, potentially all four, have been trimmed. The obvious ones are the left and right edges.

This lawsuit feels like a long shot because I don't know if the jury/judge will truly grasp the issue. Years ago, when my house was broken into and cards stolen, I could not get the police detective to understand...well, anything at all about the hobby.

Actually, I think this suit has a strong premise. It's not so much about the cards - it's actually about the business practices and illegal actions by the defendants specifically the intent and scope for committing fraud (not to mention the racketeering). I look forward to hearing the arguments on this one - I'm curious as to what PSA is going to put forward as their defense. I wouldn't be surprised if it was settled out of court before it goes too far, though. Like was said above, I think the worst thing that could happen to PSA is the publicity of the case facts and the potential damage to their (remaining) business if the judgement goes against them.

How far along do you think it will go?

Everyone seems to want it to at least go to the discovery phase. I will admit I know as much about the law as I learn from TV which I am sure is not even close to real life.
