Speculation over on the beckett boards is that Fleer, which has been struggling financially this year, is going out of business. Some people believe that they will be bought by a different company, and others believe that they will close up shop and liquidate their inventory. If Fleer goes out of business it is unclear whether pending redemptions would be honored. Baljitgill spoke to Lloyd Pawlak (you have probably seen his name on the back of your GU/AU's), and he says that Fleer will make an announcement on their situation next week. Rumor is that 80% of Fleer employees have lost their jobs and that Fleer will not show up at next week's NFL photo shoot.

There has been no formal press release from Fleer saying that they are going out of business, but it doesn't look good.

I've been hearing about this on the CU forums too; the amazing thing is that there wasn't much in the way of Fleer acting like it was in trouble up until very recently. I have a couple of redemptions that I haven't sent in but I think I'm gonna hold off until this apparent state of limbo clears out. If Fleer does go out of business I'm pretty sure somebody will try to buy it out, since there's still some very marketable Fleer brands. Gotta imagine the redemptions will be taken care somehow given how lawsuit-happy America is getting; if anything, Topps, UD, or Playoff might find a way to build some good will (and perhaps more customers) by offering something for those redemptions.

oh well i just hope that current fleer cards dont go plumeting down in BV.. cause in years past when a company went out of busines ie. Edge... their product bv went in the tank

i dont think they will be bought out,

probably gonna be like pacific and just close up shops maybe another company will buy the rights to some of the brand names.

never been a fan of fleer porducts but its too bad for all of thei employees

I believe all this speculation is genuine, although some of it may be rumors, I will bet that Fleer is going bankrupt.

I also dont think any company will buy them out, they will liquidate everything and not honor ANY redemptions, too cost-worthy to mail them out when they can just NOT do it and save the $$$!!!!!

Which REALLY ****s because I have all these redemptions sent to them!:

Bought those all, most were around $20-25 each, some a bit more like $30, figure thats about $200-300 worth of $$$ I spent for NOTHING!!!!!!!

And now with fleer not answering phones or faxes theres no way to get in touch, im not going to be like these collectors I see who still call in hopes and wait for 2 hours just to be automatically disconnected, Im going to have to bit the bullet here. I wish I at least had the redemption cards themselves, at least something! Plus I had to pay for certified mail or insurance on each one when I sent in, theres another what $30 or more just to send them to them!

Wow this is rediculous, talk about a reason to quit the hobby!!!!!,.....:(

For those of you with multiple redemptions it might be prudent to make file a suit in Small Claims; if you get it in before Fleer announces anything they will have to do something about it.

even if you file a suit in small claims court and they declare bankrupty, the suit will be dropped

at least thats how it works here in quebec (i work in the small claims court of montreal) and when a defendat files for bankrupty all the suits against him are dropped and the plintiffs have to dcontact the bankrupty manager and hes put on a list of creditors and hell probably gonna get nothing after the governments and the banks which have priority gets their money.

but myabe you have different laws down there

dherm- I have seen a bunch of other people get redemptions back the past few days. That should make people with redemptions feel a little better about their chances of getting their cards

newman- I don't think Fleer cards will decrease in value. Other companies that have gone out of business and had their cards lose value were really only in the hobby for a couple years. Fleer has been a major force in the hobby for some time now and I don't see people paying less for their cards. I personally will continue to pay the same for Fleer cards.

I would think that another company would gobble them up and continue to produce cards. Think they would restructure a bit before they just up and close down. I have seen no evidence of a lag in service one bit

You must not collect hockey, as Fleer hockey product is all but worthless.
Personally, I won't miss them, any product I had from them never held value.

Rumors I think will be found true:
80% of their staff is about to be unemployed
Bankruptcy filing
The remaining staff will stick around to dump remaining product on the market while hoping for a buyout

I have Javon Walker auto card redemptions that I have already been waiting 8 months for. Have been in contact with Fleer and continually get nothing.

So i have a question...... are the Fleer products going to fall in BV ALOT?!?! Cause some of my favorite cards are Fleer brand..... i think i might just hold onto them, though they arent worth much (Maybe) they are still low #'d and Nice cards!!!

Unless they don't destroy their press plates and a bunch of counterfeits surface, their value will stay the same or increase. Look at Star Co. basketball for example. They increased every year until counterfeits surfaced in which Star Co. sold their press plates instead of destroying them.

Well This Royally Sux Because I Sent Off a HB Of National Pastimes To Get Replacements And Was Told It Would Take 8 - 12 Weeks So What Now Am i Jus Screwed Out Of My Money...? :(
