they remind me of when I was a young boy, saving up pennies for packs of my heroes.

Go ahead and post your reasons.

Let's show the cyber world that a lot of people love the hobby for what it is.. enjoy it, collect what you like.

Posi-****ing-tivity folks!

Memories from the past

Meeting new collectors - which is VERY HARD in Sweden

My pedantic side gets a kick when I sort stuff. I LOVE to put cards in soft sleeves, top loaders, pocket pages, fill an album... Mmm so sweet

I really enjoy the community and adding to my Patrick Roy collection. I don't need the best 1/1's or anything like that anymore, I am just as happy to add a new base card that I haven't owned before.

I think my new favorite thing is finding parallels of cards. It always looks cool to see them side by side in the binder.

I enjoy the different pictures that appear on the cards and the photography, which makes each card unique and the chance to had pieces of equipment and autographs to my collection

Like you Ameet, it reminds me of my childhood.....great memories. I came back to hockey cards about 5 years ago, just couldn't stay away I guess  And now thanks to UD, ITG, and Panini I am fortunate to add pieces like these to my collection years later

Card collecting reconnects me to my youth. Those care free days of adventure and having fun with my buddies. Playing road hockey all day (or on the pond) playing right through supper getting in the house just in time to watch Wayne and Shuster and next HNIC. I would always have the cards of the 2 teams playing laid out to read while watching the game. Collecting with my buddies and trading to complete the set. As I mentioned before we collected our set, than your team, stars than doubles for trading and pile for showdown and knockdowns. I use to always have a pile of cards in my back pocket wrapped up with an elastic band, talk about rounded corners lol. I would read the back of every card probably 100 times during that collecting season. We would look at them even more in the summer dying for some NHL hockey. That's when collecting was fun, cards were about the love of hockey and not about the money. Cards are still enjoyed for the love of hockey but it's not the same now, its big business, it's all about the big hit/pull. Trades were usually 1-1 the only value was on how much you liked the card or needed it lol.

I still love pulling out my old cards, seeing certain names of players you almost forgot about. Hockey and cards are awesome.
Now I collect some with my 12 year old. It's fun collecting with him as he has a lot of our old qualities. He collects who he likes and he still loves base cards esp if there is a goalie on them. He don't care if a card is worth 10 cents or 10 dollars it's great.

Brings me back to my childhood where I would do chores and collect all my change to ride my bike down the street to the local corner store and by a pack of cards hoping to get a hologram card

I love collecting because:

Felix Potvin and Cam Ward PC - Potvin was my fav player growing up, Ward is my fav active player when I got back into collecting. Love the thrill of the chase and knocking off some nice cards off the want list.

90's inserts - they remind me of the 90's when I first started collecting as a kid and couldn't afford most shiny inserts back in the day. Some of the sets are just so pretty when they are completed

HOF hard signed auto collection - I pick up hard signed HOF auto's from time to time, I have always loved collecting autographs of HOFers.

vintage rookies - I have a collection of mostly 80's & a few 70's rookies (HOFer's), picked up a few '51 Parkies and I could just stare at those all day long <-- enough said there

Great thread Ameet

Why..... Getting back into the hobby was because it brought to closer to my childhood memories. Now with 10 years past, sure the cardboard is the common thread but now it's more about the people here locally and on HI. There are some fantastic, positive members and that's what it's all about

I love collecting cards/memorabilia because it allows me to have an additional social circle outside of my usual group. These people can be talked to about cards, memorabilia, or sports in general and it allows for the break-up of the monotony of real life conversation...listening to someone's issues with Revenue Canada or about new drapes gets old and quick. Sports conversation always keeps me interested...as long as it's about hockey and nothing else :)

Additionally, it allows me to show my fandom to a particular team or player and with my game worn memorabilia, allows me to get close to the history of the game, regardless of my own skills on the ice.

I also love collecting because it allows me to go on additional trips throughout the year that I would otherwise not go on. A drive down to Calgary or a plane trip to Toronto may not happen without cards and memorabilia as a reason for it.

Furthermore, collecting is fun because it has the power to bring you closer to the friends and family members that you already have.

And sometimes, I love collecting cards because the right hit from the right pack can often pay for one or more new game-used goaltending pieces for my museum, and that is super!

I like bringing a nice card with me to the library when I'm studying. I can look at it every once in a while (instead of going online for an hour) and thus it keeps me focused and motivated!

Connects me to my youth and Saturday nights watching the early 70`s Canadiens with my family. Playing with my cards, games like Knock Down, Tops, Nearest to the Wall, Odd or Even... Those were great days and I collect because of that time in my life. Anyone old enough to remember the smell of gum on your new cards for the first couple months, lol? Nothing better. Memories... :) -Mike

I really just like the banter nowadays.

I grew kind of jaded with the cards themselves after having seemingly obtaining every nice high end piece of all the players I ever wanted. Soon after it was like, it's all the same and redundant, yawn, no to the next, whoopee.

But I found after all the cards I had acquired I had also acquired even more friends and people to chat with. It was great and I loved it.

I still do buy cards here and there, but it's usually only a whopper of a piece because it really takes something special to grab my attention............ and the money from my wallet.

I have recently found a rekindled fondness for the old inserts made new again. Love seeing UD and Panini bring back all the great stuff from the 90's.

My two sons have gotten involved as well and that is probably what keeps me the most in touch with the card aspect fo the hobby.

Austin, my oldest, is autistic and loves Anze Kopitar, that is his boy. We have had a lot of fun times tracking down cards for him over the years. We finally got his "holy grail" last year and he has since really had a waning interest. Once you reach the summit, I suppose it's impossible to climb any higher? Like father like son! ;)

Blake, my youngest, is just into aesthetics at this point, much like Austin was when he started. He opens packs and "Ooooohs" and "Ahhhhhs" whatever grabs his attention. It's really cute yet intriguing to see what he is drawn to.

Both boys do enjoy opening packs, Austin knows what the "hits" are and aren't and Blake, like I said, goes for "shinies" or whatever grabs his fancy at the time.

We really focus our time now on our in-person fun and the boys memorabilia and personalized autograph collection.

For me, the pictures and the memories of my sons with the best of the best is all I need. That's what I truly "collect". :)

Nice topic.

If you want to talk about collecting memories and reliving them, as it has been said, put the damn gum back in the packs lol!!! Then you have a full on flashback!!

Its hard to take the kid out of a person. I think that is one of the biggest reasons.

It's funny for me, as the business side has actually been the most exciting thing for me. I love being able to sell cards to people from all over the world, filling holes in their collections that they might not have otherwise found. One of the best things about it is that because I buy so many different things, I have had a HUGE amount of cards pass through my hands, and it's always fun to open the mailbox and see what's there.

I've recently started piecing together a Senators collection which has been nearly unlimited in it's possibilities, meaning I'll be just as happy picking up a Karlsson Auto/Patch as I am a Bonk jersey card. That and my slow work on the Team Canada Auto set has kept me interested in picking up things for myself.

All in all, I'd say I'm having the most fun I've had in years!

As another member said, it takes me back to the days when I would save my allowance and ride my bike to 7-11 to buy a couple packs of cards. I would ride that Huffy almost 4 miles each way, rain or sun, thinking the whole way about pulling a Stan Mikita or Bobby Hull or Bobby Orr or Guy Lafleur. I remember saving the gum up until I had enough to pack my whole mouth full of that chalky nasty goodness! Taking the Red Wing cards and shooting them with my BB gun in the back yard, or using the Wings as my "bike spoke" cards and I didnt care if they got ruined. looking back now, it makes me sick to think how many perfectly mint (and hella valuable now) Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Alex Delvecchio, Etc cards I ruined back in the day.

I have gone through so many different collecting phases the last decade, collecting this set or that set or certain players, and then selling them when we got tired if them. Honestly, it's been a crazy decade and multiple times it became boring and tiresome, but now I think we have found our "niche", something my son and I are both very happy with and are having a ton of fun with. We thought about it, did a lot of research, talked to multiple people, and finally settled on building vintage Topps Hockey Sets and all cards graded by PSA and logged on the PSA Set Registry. We started with 1957/58 and 1960/61 because our two favorite Hawks (Mikita and Hall) have rookies in those sets. The 57/58 set is going to have every card graded PSA 6 or higher, the 60/61 set will be PSA 7 or higher. Once those are done, we will start 58/59 Topps (Hull's rookie), with all the cards except Hull in PSA 7 or higher grades. The Hull, do to the prices, will be a 4 or 5. Then we will move on to do all the other Topps sets prior to 57/58 and up to 1965. 65 is our cutoff for what we consider vintage, but we may expand to include just the Topps set with Orr's RC.

We have so much fun with these vintage sets, they are small enough to keep them semi-affordable even graded, but rare enough to make for a fun and sometimes frustrating chase. :). The cards themselves are so beautifully "plain", they have great stats, facts, and the fun trivia on the back. They include so many incredible players, hall of famers, that I feel so lucky to get to see play when I was a kid. Yes, as crazy as it may seem to people who grew up in the "modern" card era of game used and auto cards, and $400 for 1 pack with only 6 cards, but we a actually have fun and get excited when we finally find that Glen Skov or Bronco Horvath Topps card graded a PSA 7. It truly does bring me back to my youth, and, aside from being fun, I know for a fact they will also always be "valuable" and can be considered a true "investment". Something I can hand down to my son, and hopefully he will hand down to his son.

We always have something to chase by building these vintage sets, we don't have to bother worrying about release dates being pushed back or waiting on redemption cards to be made, but we can look forward to finding that 1960 common player we need who only has 7 or 8 copies of his card that are graded high enough to fit our criteria. So, in simplest terms, we love collecting because we love hockey, we love cards, I love my son and get to spend time with him doing something that doesn't involve a video game and we both enjoy the hunt, and quite frankly, I'm a cardboard addict. :D

This thread has made me all misty-eyed. Keep it comin'! I got an extra box of Kleenex in storage lol

I collect because it reminds me of of when I was a kid I guess. I always enjoyed builing sets. I really got into collecting when my first son was born in 2005, and both of my sons have a bunch of cards and seem to enjoy the teams and the players. My youngest son who is 7 has ADHD and he can sit for hours sorting the cards into teams and tryingto read the stats. My daughter who's 2 seems to enjoy cards as well. For the longest time she tried to eat them, I'll give her a card now and then and sh'll play with it for a while, then crupple it up or start to rip into pieces. Ohh, and I like the thrill of the chase. It's always fun to pull a big hit.

My son is also ADHD, can't sit still for more then a few minutes usually (unless he's playing video games), but when it comes to ripping wax or sorting cards, he will sit for hours. Crazy how that works eh?

Remember how rookies were just guys in the set that you didn't know. The only rookies that really mattered were the ones to fill your set and those from your favourite team.
