I've been out of the game for a little (okay, a long) bit so excuse me if this has been asked and answered before.

Why was it necessary for certain players to have a jersey mock-up used instead of their photo? And on top of that, why do some jersey mock-ups not even include the nameplate (McDavid jumps to mind for this)? I assume it's something with rights, but I'd prefer a real answer over speculation.

Jersey mock-up, for sure, is because Leaf doesn't have a license to use that player's image.

Gretzky, Orr, McDavid, and (I think) Roy & Dryden are the only ones you see without the names on the back of the Jersey.... those are all UD Exclusive players (other than Dryden, who is a "I don't want to be on anyone's cards" guy) - while I'm not exactly sure why a picture of the back of a jersey that says 'GRETZKY 99' violates something, clearly it must.

Ending the exclusive doesn't necessarily change that...

I don't know the dollars involved, who would actually pay what - but my gut tells me that for Leaf to get a license, the NHL is going to have to want to go from 1 to 4 companies.

Even if that did happen (Leaf gets a license) they still can't use Gretzky, Roy, Orr... any retired player that has an exclusive with UD.

The use of jersey backs with actual player photos will always make Leaf products look incredibly cheap. The UD exclusive needs to end.
