It's kinda sorta maybe a shield...or not. I dunno.

What happened here?

I know it came from the V patch here....

but why a) would UD use that patch as a shield? or b) if it's not legit, would someone fake a shield card?

They used the Vintage logo shield instead of the shield on the hem...they're both shields. Not sure what the big deal is.

To me they are quite different.
One is the brand logo that every jersey has (to that certain size)
And the other is a promotional patch.

My question is, did UpperDeck do that, or is that an attempt by a faker to make the shield..more rare?

To me this isn't a shield. I saw this several times. But thats just my 2-cents. Nice looking card either way.

Patch is legit. Card was pulled that way. Why its like that, I have no idea but its the only one I've ever seen like that on an actual shield card.

They (UD) set the standard for what their shield cards are. On those particular jerseys, there are three shields to use: The actual shield from the hem of the jersey, the shield on the "Vintage" logo and the shield on the neckline tag.

The big deal is that they used the wrong shield of the three choices. A neat idea would have been to make a Vintage Logo card and use the entire "V" patch. They might sacrifice some picture space, but it would work and would make for a pretty wicked card.

I'm with you there, though...I wouldn't complain one bit if I pulled this card. The shield on the neck tag is on the inside of the jersey on the Reebok size and wash info tag. Correction on the shield on the hem...looks much nicer on the neck anyways.

I think its fine. The card looks stellar and I would be happy to own it.

I see nothing wrong with it.

On a side note (and I'll probably get stones thrown at me) but here goes:

Hockey collector's are the whiniest bunch of all card collectors. Not even close.

You clearly haven't heard baseball collectors go at it.

I spend way more time on baseball boards then I ever do here. In some ways baseball guys have a lot to complain about.

Hockey guys would light themselves on fire if Topps had the exclusive.

The Ryder shield is more unique than any shield you'll ever collect. I'd take that shield which was ever worn, I think, once than an NHL shield which is on every jersey ever made

Ryan,

IMHO - I do think the hockey card collectors as a whole, have the largest sense of entitlement of all sports card collectors. Funny thing is - I think considering what is out there as a whole - is significantly better than what the other sports get. Way more hard-signed cards in hockey over any other sport - labels are an accepted fact of life.

We're spoiled, I admit that. We don't NEARLY have the problems that baseball or any of the other sports do. We know what rookie cards are and don't have MLB interfering to TELL US what they are.

I look at it this way. Hockey collectors aren't stupid. I'm not saying that baseball collectors are, but I am saying that we know our **** and when a manufacturer comes out and tries to change something that doesn't need changing (or in this case, tries to tell me that the "V" logo from the Heritage Classic counts as a shield), we'll let them know about it.

Also, keep in mind that hockey is Upper Deck's big offering now. Football, Basketball and Baseball are all gone. They should be neck deep making hockey collectors happy.

We DESERVE to have a sense of entitlement.

Yea I think that Ryder shield is sick. I remember having a 05-06 Ultimate Endorsed Emblems Mike Riebero with half of that shield on there, I loved that card.

You are totally right. It's the same reason why UD constantly made brands for every sport and yet in hockey something is always different. Like for the big three (Football, Baseball, Basketball) the big set is Exquisite. For Hockey it's The Cup.

When you break a box of UD base brand, it has more good stuff in it than it would in any other sport. Young Guns, for example.

Most collectors of any major sports cards are less than bright. It's why card values for top defensemen are much lower than goalies and scoring forwards even though GMs and coaches don't think so. In the old days with wax paper and bubblegum, when the serious fans (but not serious card collectors) could still collect, centers were #1 and top defensemen along with high scoring forwards were just a notch below. Goalies were a distant third since they were/are so inconsistent.

When the hobby escalated due to the pretender companies just making cards rarer for no reason, most of the best hockey-knowledge-able fans were driven out of the market. Nowadays, it's more complicated to get into hockey cards than it is to get in to hockey!

I rather collectors demand what they want than have a company make whatever they want and eventually flood the market with meaningless cards. They have their pluses and minuses.
