Hello all,

The following cards are pickups from the months of January to mid February. I am just starting to get settled in my new Alberta residence and finally have some time to put together a small show-and-tell thread. So without further adieu, onto the show!

#12. 2005-06 UD Game Jersey Series 1 David Aebischer (2-colour)

It is not often I get to add new multicoloured versions of the series 1 or 2 set, but every now and again a new card pops up that surprises me. Previous to this card I had seen a black/white swatch Aebischer but never a blue/black version.

#11. 2005-06 Artifacts Treasured Patches Nikolai Khabibulin 26/50 (4-colour)

One of the great perks to collecting cards that are 15 years old is that you are able to find great deals on cards which no longer have a big collector following like in their playing days. I guess Khabibulin fits the description, and this nice 4-colour patch really pops against the golden background. Very happy to add my first treasured swatches patch /50.

#10. 2005-06 UD Masterpieces Yellow Printing Plate Jason Spezza (1/1)

While I don't typically chase printing plates, I don't mind picking them up if I'm buying in bulk or for the right price. As a young leaf fan, I can remember the Alfredsson-Spezza-Heatley line absolutely touching the Leafs seemingly every game in the mid 2000's, I never thought he would wear the blue and white one day. He has been a bright spot of a very confusing Leafs season and his cards are very welcome to the collection.

#9. 2005-06 UD Game Jersey Patch Series 2 Jason Spezza 13/15 (2-colour)

The second Spezza on the list is a nice 2-colour patch, one of only four that I have seen that do not feature an all white piece. I have yet to see a three colour patch so if you see one please let me know!

#8. 2005-06 UD Game Jersey Patch Series 1 Jason Spezza 12/15 (2-colour)

The second Spezza patch to make the list is the Series 1 patch /15. This is one of only two that I have seen with a two-colour patch, and this one features an almost perfect 50-50 split. Can't get much better than that.. unless there is a 3-colour piece out there!

#7. 2005-06 UD Game Jersey Patch Series 1 Jason Arnott 4/15 (3-colour)

A nice 3-colour patch from Arnott's days with Devils, I was happy to add it to the collection. This now gives me a total of 60/142 patches or roughly 42%, so I've still got a ways to go.

#6. 2005-06 UD High Glossy Scott Gomez (7/10)

The first of two HG pickups, this Gomez card became available three times over the span of about three weeks. I believe a Gomez collector was liquidating their collection and I missed out on the first two offerings. Once the third copy went up for auction I wasn't going to let it slip through my fingers again, and now it sits happily in my HG set.

#5. 2005-06 UD High Glossy Jason Spezza (2/10)

The final HG addition and the last Spezza in the thread, I am pleased to add the 185th HG card in my set. The last two cards give me roughly 38% completion.

And now the top 4!

#4. 2005-06 ITG Heroes and Prospects Complete Logo Alexandre Vincent (1/1)

This is my first card from this set, but man are these really eye catching in person. Being that these logos come from the 2005 CHL Top Prospects Game, its fairly easy to photo-match it in a sense, which is an added bonus. A picture of him during that game can be seen below.

#3. 2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects En Fuego Shield Ryan Whitney (1/1)

This was a special card to add to the collection given that in the past year, I discovered the Spittin' Chiclets podcast where Whitney co-hosts with former player Paul Bisonnette. They are entertaining and their interviews really give a different outlook on the past and present game. A great card to go along with an entertaining listen.

#2. 2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects En Fuego Shield Alexander Steen (1/1)

The second HP En Fuego shield, this Steen card had been on my radar for years. The seller was willing to work with me on both the Whitney and Steen Shields and give me a great deal on both. This now gives me nine unique shields from this set, and I'm always looking to add more!

And now the #1 pickup...

#1. 2007-08 Alexander Ovechkin Game Used Stick

I cannot believe I own this piece of NHL history, and fitting to show it to the forum a day after he joined the 700 goal club. This stick was used during his best statistical season to date, 2007-08, where he potted 65 goals, 47 assists for a total of 112 points in 82 games. Some of the more notable features of the stick are the marked "8" at the top of the shaft, the insane "banana" curve on the blade and how surprising short it is for a 6'3 player to use. This is what has surprised me the most in both the Ovechkin and Crosby sticks I own, is how small the sticks seem. But I have read that both use sticks which ,vertically, reach their chest/chin area, while beginners are typically taught to use sticks which reach their forehead or nose on skates.

Though I have not photo matched the stick to a particular game, I have included some photos of Ovechkin during that season using this exact model of stick, the CCM Vector OPS 10, for reference.

Awesome Spezza additions! Nice to track down 3 big pieces of the same player for your sets.

That Ovechkin Game-Used stick is in a league of it's own though. Incredible pieces you've been able to add to your collection in such a short time span.

Keep on tracking down these older cards! I really enjoy it when you get to add to your impressive collection.

Very nice haul. Always love seeing what 05-06 cards you bring in.

Just a heads up the Vincent, the CHL usually has players wear 3-4 jerseys for the top prospect game and events. Very cool card, I always liked the Complete Logo cards.

Great stick, quite incredible. As for the Spezza patches, I'm almost certain I've see atleast one of them with 3 color.
I actually had that 26/50 Khabibulin card back in the days too, believe it or not. Checked my bucket to confirm :D Speaking of Khabby I saw his 05/06 UD patch /15 sold on ebay for close to a $100 the other day. Perhaps set collectors fight over it.
