Hey everyone, Joe P the Larry Murphy Guy here. I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year's. 2025 was an interesting year for my collection. It started out on a high note, not with particularly high-end cards but with a few tough low-numbered issues I hadn't expected to land anytime soon. I thought it was setting the tone for the rest of the year; alas, it was not. It ebbed, it flowed, and ultimately I was unable to keep up the momentum. I slacked off on my S+Ts for the last 4 months of the year because honestly, my results weren't warranting any.

When I last left you, I was riding the high of landing the President's Choice Stickhandle with an assist from our own Eric Andrews. Every year, I like at least one cornerstone pickup to hang my hat on. That Stickhandle was easily a top card on my wantlist, and if getting it represented a deal with the hobby devil and meant the rest of the year would be a dud, I was willing to make that trade-off. Since July, things were very much trending towards me leaving 2025 with a whimper...

...until they weren't.

Allow me to catch you up to speed. You'll see what I mean.

When this popped up on Ebay, I had to grab it. This is my 4th copy of this card (1 of which is autographed) and was mostly a boredom/impulse buy. These 85/86 Capitals Pizza Hut team issues are hella tough and I just feel obligated to grab them whenever I can. The timing coincided with our last Canada Post strike, but I bought it and the American Ebay seller was more than happy to hold and ship once the dust settled.

Shipping Buddy Kevin Mitchell then helped me out with a few signed base:

I'm not usually a photo guy, simply out of concern for storage room, but was drawn to this one because of the informative back:

Enjoys playing golf and going to movies during his free time? Clearly I was right to collect him because we're kindred spirits.

Upper Deck recently came out with their Detroit Red Wings Centennial box set. There isn't much of consequence in this phase of the release, but Larry was featured and it gave me the chance to pad my numbers with a few cheap pickups:

I saw these in a Euro hockey card group on Facebook. Was happy to come to a deal for them because these are popping up less and less in general. However, I do have some concern because this was late October-early November and they still have not arrived in the mail. I suspect no foul play from the seller - we're still in communication and it was hardly the kind of price one would risk their reputation over. And I've seen examples of late deliveries from Europe, so this isn't exactly unique. I don't want to discourage anyone from doing international business and am content to continue waiting, I'd just be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about receiving them:

This next one was a nice December surprise. Early in the year, Kevin had helped me snipe a super cheap copy of this same card on Ebay, but as with all things that seem too good to be true, the seller promptly cancelled the transaction due to "losing the card". Yahuh. To their credit though, I've never seen them relist the card since, so they're committed to the lie at least.

When a Murphy search on Facebook turned this up in an auction group, I was happy to have another shot at one. The bidding was quickly approaching my walk-away price, but fortunately it held strong and I was able to win with an uncontested bid in the last minute:

And from September through December, that was pretty much it, so you can see my lack of motivation to provide an update. Until...

A few years ago, collector Ryan Cheltenham (my_filthy_habit on Instagram) began a collection of Cup Emblems of Endorsement and a Google search led him to images of my 2 Murphys from an article about my collection on our own creasecollector Aaron's blog . Since the blog also contained my contact info, Ryan reached out - would I sell one? I hadn't thought about that. Knowing the lukewarm hobby reception for Murphy, I expected the same from Ryan and wasn't interested in laterally selling one for cost. But I thought wrong. His interest was real, and he made a generous offer well above what I had into it. In short, I let one copy go, satisfied that it was going to a good home where Ryan could showcase it on social media, and that was that.

Recently, Ryan shifted his focus to completing his Cup Limited Logos and that brought with it some tough decisions, namely liquidating other cards in order to fund them. That included the Murphy EoE. When he ultimately committing to moving it, he gave me the first crack at buying it back. Realistically, I thought I'd priced myself out of it when I sold it. I assumed he would try to recoup his full money back on it and was obliged to let him try to, but when he listed it at a reduced price in an Instagram story sale...it was tempting. Not an instant BIN, but tempting. I voiced this inner turmoil laughingly to Ryan, to which he said he'd do even better than that for me if I wanted it back. How much better? Enough that it was an offer I ultimately couldn't refuse in the other direction. So it's back home until the next Ryan finds it and makes me an offer I can't refuse :)

A nice end to 2025, wouldn't you say? But I couldn't leave well enough alone.

In May of 2024, I received a PM on here from our own Maple Leaf Sports shopkeep Darren. Darren has always been very supportive of my collection, helping where he can. He'd seen a card in a break on social media that he knew I'd want to see and provided the breaker's X handle. I'm not on X but followed the breadcrumbs, found the breaker on Instagram and messaged them there. The breaker, Ty, knew the winner, Cole, and connected me with him on Facebook. I thought the rest would be a formality, but sometimes something worth having doesn't come easily.

Cole wasn't a seller and had never sold a card before. He preferred to trade for a similar premium card of Jagr, McDavid or Draisaitl. Not only did I not have those, but they would be worth infinitely more than a Murphy. When he finally came around on the idea of selling, he consulted people in his hobby circle and eventually came back to me with a price. It was more than I was comfortable with - thwarted again. As he'd done what I'd asked and named a price I just wasn't willing to meet, I respectfully decided to leave him be and return under my rock. I only asked that if he did move it, could he please let me know who he moved it to?

About a year had passed and I'd heard nothing from Cole on the matter so I decided to investigate. He said he still had it and hit me with a number that was lower than the original price I'd balked at. I countered off of that, and as negotiators often do, he met me in the middle. Was I going to walk over a difference of $25 CDN over my comfort level? I was not.

Was hoping to close this before the new year, but fate had other plans and we closed it today. It feels surreal to have it incoming. I paid well; Cole said he had a better offer but thought it belonged with me more and was in the generous Christmas spirit. Who am I to argue with that?

Thank you Darren.
Thank you Ty (ty.thecardguy)
Thank you Cole.

Dunno what the rest of my 2026 will look like but I'm starting it with a bang.
